When Korean Wave Meets Politics - The Xinyu Controversy Storm
Imagine casually scrolling through your favorite K-pop idol's messages and suddenly getting hit with a political bombshell that could end careers.
That's exactly what happened when Xinyu, the Chinese member of the 24-member girl group tripleS, went full political mode on the fan communication platform fromm.
The Beijing-born idol didn't just dip her toes into controversial waters - she straight-up dove in. In messages written in Chinese and auto-translated to Korean, Xinyu boldly declared, "Macau has been Chinese from the beginning. Hong Kong and Taiwan are the same."
But the real shocker was her reaction when fans warned her about potential backlash.
"People who don't agree with me shouldn't follow me on fromm. Why should I be scared of being scolded? Did I say something wrong?" she wrote with the kind of confidence that would make even the most seasoned politicians nervous. This level of boldness is like someone in our country making extremely sensitive statements about Kashmir and asking "What's the problem?" - that's how daring this was.

The "One China" Principle - A Political Minefield in K-Pop
For those wondering what all the fuss is about, Xinyu's statements align perfectly with China's "One China" policy. This principle essentially claims that mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau are all one unified country under Chinese government rule.
For us as young people, this might feel a bit complex. It's similar to saying all states in our country form one federal nation, but the situation is much more sensitive.
Taiwan has a virtually independent government and economic system, while Hong Kong claims autonomy even under "One Country, Two Systems." It's like the complexity of Puducherry or Delhi having completely different political systems while still being part of our nation.
This policy became a massive source of tension, especially after the 2019-2020 Hong Kong protests when people literally took to the streets opposing Beijing's growing influence.
Most celebrities would avoid this kind of political hot potato, but Xinyu grabbed it with both hands.
This isn't the first time Chinese K-pop idols have found themselves in this predicament. In 2019, several Chinese stars including Jackson Wang from GOT7 and Lay Zhang from EXO publicly supported the "One China" policy during the Hong Kong protests. It's almost like a rite of passage for Chinese idols - support the policy or face consequences back home.

The Bigger Picture - When Entertainment Meets Politics
This incident reflects the broader challenges facing the K-pop industry's relationship with China. Since 2016, China has maintained unofficial sanctions on Korean cultural content following South Korea's deployment of the THAAD missile defense system. It's been a rollercoaster relationship with occasional thaws followed by sudden freezes.
The situation is particularly complex for groups like tripleS, which includes members from various countries, including Nien, who has dual Taiwanese/Vietnamese citizenship. Imagine how awkward group meetings must be when one member is essentially claiming another member's homeland as part of her own country.

Vijayawada: Chief minister Chandrababu Naidu directed officials to take swift action to restore and revitalize the AP Fiber Net project. He charged that the previous government had completely derailed the AP Fiber Net project, a visionary initiative launched between 2014 and 2019. Reviewing the progress of AP Fibernet activities here on Monday, the chief minister asked the officials to assess the challenges, financial constraints, necessary corrective steps, and new policy directions. He said that the system, designed to benefit the public, students, and government departments, was exploited for political purposes by the previous govt. He pointed out that while there were 8.70 lakh connections before 2019, was dropped to 4.50 lakh during the YSRCP regime. "We managed the organization effectively with just 130 employees and provided over 8 lakh connections. But the YSRCP government created unauthorized posts to accommodate its party workers, expanding the workforce from 130 to 1,350 and misusing public funds. This was a new form of corruption where party affiliates were placed in government roles and used for political work. The fiber network was no exception. The chief minister approved the integration of AP Fiber Net with the BharatNet (Amended BharatNet Programme – ABP). Under this scheme, the Centre will allocate Rs. 1,900 crore to AP Fiber Net from 2025 to 2035. He also approved the transition of fiber networks in 1692 gram panchayats across Chittoor and Visakhapatnam districts from linear to ring architecture. Give me a year, I'll fix Bengaluru, says Surya as he slams tunnel road project

Bengaluru: BJP MP Tejasvi Surya Monday launched a blistering attack on the govt, slamming its Rs 17,780 crore tunnel road project and insisting that if he "held as much power as the deputy CM for just one year," he would "solve all problems in Bengaluru". Surya, who represents Bangalore South in the Lok Sabha, called the tunnel project unscientific which serves the elite while burdening the masses. He said the 18km Hebbal-to-Silk Board tunnel road is for "crorepatis of Sadashivanagar and millionaires of Koramangala 4th Block". He said the proposed toll of Rs 660 and the Rs 7,100 crore viability gap funding makes the project economically unjustifiable. "Why should 90% of Bengalureans, who don't own cars, pay for something that only benefits 10%?" he asked. "This is economic untouchability," he said. "Instead of easing traffic, this project will worsen congestion by encouraging more private vehicles." Surya accused the govt of bypassing due process by pushing ahead without clearance from Bengaluru Metropolitan Land Transport Authority (BMLTA), mandatory under the BMLTA Act. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Forget Furosemide, Use This Household Item To Help Drain Edema Fluid WellnessGuide Learn more Undo "None of the goals under the Comprehensive Mobility Plan have been met, but they are still pushing this tunnel," he said. He alleged large-scale irregularities in preparation of the detailed project report (DPR), which cost Rs 9.5 crore but was allegedly copied from a BMRCL report that cost just Rs 1.6 crore. He said the feasibility report was prepared by a consultant barred in a Madhya Pradesh NHAI project, while the firm behind the DPR is facing a Rs 500 crore scam probe in Jammu and Kashmir. "The DPR was completed before the feasibility study," he said. He also lambasted Congress for neglecting core civic infrastructure. "Over 20 flyovers have been pending for five to six years. At this speed, it'll take 800 years to build 100 flyovers," he said.

In Manipur, Amit Shah recalls freedom fighter Hemam Neelmani Singh

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday recalled Manipur freedom fighter Hemam Neelmani Singh, a member of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's Indian National Army, as he was felicitated posthumously by the Bharat Vikas Parishad, with Shah as the chief guest at the event. Evading arrest till 1945, Shah said, Singh went back to Moirang after his release from jail in 1946, and engaged in social work. 'When I first went to Manipur, I saw youth conversing in Hindi. When I asked them how they could converse in Hindi so well, they recalled Heman Neelmani Singh, who worked for linguistic unity throughout his life,' he said. The Bharat Vikas Parishad is a voluntary organisation inspired by Swami Vivekanand that was initially set up as the Citizens Council by Suraj Prakash to mobilize citizen efforts against the Chinese attack of 1962. It was given its present name in 1963.
