Nigeria's former president Muhammadu Buhari dies in London
'President Buhari died today in London at about 4.30pm, following a prolonged illness,' President Bola Tinubu's spokesperson said in a post on X.
Buhari, 82, who first led the country as a military ruler after a coup in the 1980s, earned a devoted following for his brand of anti-corruption conviction politics.
He referred to himself as a 'converted democrat' and swapped his military uniform for kaftans and prayer caps.
'I belong to everybody and I belong to nobody,' was a constant refrain Buhari told supporters and critics alike.
Buhari defeated Goodluck Jonathan in 2015 in what was judged to be Nigeria's fairest election to date. Many hoped the retired major general would crack down on armed groups, just as he had as the country's military head of state.
Instead, violence that had mostly been confined to the northeast spread. That left swathes of Nigeria outside the control of its stretched security forces as gunmen in the northwest, armed separatists and gangs in the southeast roamed unchecked.
Much of his appeal lay in the anti-corruption ethos that was a central plank of his agenda both as a military and civilian ruler. He said endemic corruption in Nigeria's political culture was holding people back.
But Buhari quickly disappointed after his 2015 win.
He took six months to name his cabinet. During that time, the oil-dependent economy was hobbled by low crude prices, prompting people to call him 'Baba Go Slow'.
His second victory in 2019 came despite his first term being blighted by Nigeria's first recession in a generation, militant attacks on oilfields and repeated hospital stays.
Born on December 17 1942, in Daura in the northwestern state of Katsina state, Buhari enrolled in the army at 19. He would eventually rise to the rank of major-general.
He seized power in 1983 as a military ruler, promising to revitalise a mismanaged country. Buhari took a tough line on everything from the conditions sought by the IMF to unruliness in bus queues.
In 1984, his administration attempted to kidnap a former minister and vocal critic living in Britain. The plot failed when London airport officials opened the crate containing the abducted politician.
His first stint in power was short-lived. He was removed after only 18 months by another military officer, Ibrahim Babangida.
Buhari spent much of the following 30 years in fringe political parties and trying to run for president until his eventual victory over Jonathan in 2015.

G20 think tanks call for an overhaul of IMF and World Bank financing model
South Africa heads the G20 in 2025. (@G20org/X) The G20 A 'This includes support for the development of multi-currency cross-border payment systems, swap lines between diverse countries, loans from multilateral development banks in local currencies and regional arrangements for payments in local currencies,' it said. It called for a revised IMF debt sustainability framework — jointly with the World Bank in the case of low income countries — that incorporates assets created by debt; the costs of climate change and biodiversity collapse, and accounts for policy actions and investments to mitigate those vulnerabilities. 'The G20 should encourage credit rating agencies to enhance the transparency of their rating methodologies and models and give due consideration to local economic conditions in the countries that they are rating,' the communique added. It wants the G20 to facilitate overhauling the IMF's governance model by promoting efforts to find a global agreement on quotas and ensuring that 'no individual country should have veto power'. The communique summarises priorities collected from local and international think tanks led and coordinated by the Institute for Global Dialogue, the South African Institute of International Affairs and Institute for Pan-African Thought and Conversation. As part of the G20's multiple groups, such as Business20, Civil20, Urban20, Women20, Startup 20, the T20 communique will inform the declaration of heads of state at November's summit. The communique also recommends that the G20 empower the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to preserve multilateralism while reforming the global trade system. 'The G20 should support the development of enabling national and regional integrated data governance frameworks that are holistic, rights-promoting, equitable and just. Data governance is a cross-cutting issue that will require the review of existing institutional arrangements that are not fit-for-purpose for this dynamic and complex environment,' it says. The G20 should also coordinate action to curb income and wealth concentration — particularly through the implementation of a global wealth tax and its inclusion in the United Nations Tax Convention — and champion reform of multilateral development banks and financial institutions reform to improve the access of vulnerable countries, the communique says. It calls for the promotion of value-addition and fair benefit-sharing in the critical minerals value chains, for equitable green industrialisation. Muhammadu Buhari: Nigeria mourns its ex-president and military man
Muhammadu Buhari, former president of Nigeria, a figure synonymous with anti-corruption efforts and military discipline, died on 13 July 2025 in London. Nigeria is currently experiencing a deep period of national mourning and for seven days, President Bola Tinubu has mandated that flags be flown at half-mast. Buhari's death marks the end of an important chapter for Africa's most populous country. He leaves behind a legacy, characterised by both heroic service and difficult obstacles. Muhammadu Buhari was born in Daura, in Northern Nigeria's Katsina State, in December 1942. Buhari enrolled in the Nigerian Military Training College in Kaduna in 1962 at age 20, approximately two years after Nigeria gained independence from Britain on 1 October 1960. Buhari ascended to prominence in 1983, assuming the role of Nigeria's military head of state following a coup that resulted in the ousting of President Shehu Shagari. During this period, the 'War Against Indiscipline' policy aimed to promote a thorough reorientation of social norms. The government implemented stringent measures to combat corruption and maintain discipline. From January 1984 to August 1985, his military rule was characterised by a firm stance against corruption. In 1985, General Ibrahim Babangida executed a coup d'état, resulting in the ousting of Buhari. Subsequent to this, Buhari encountered a phase of confinement. Despite his prior military command, he subsequently embarked on a career in democratic governance. His ascension to power was a protracted and challenging endeavour. After three unsuccessful attempts to become president, Buhari finally achieved a significant victory in the 2015 election, beating then-incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan for the first time. During his campaign, Buhari declared his commitment to addressing the pressing issues of corruption, insecurity and the economy in the country. After taking office, Buhari's administration had to deal with several issues, chief among them being the Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast. His administration made key gains against Boko Haram from 2015 to 2023, but faced new security threats. Recessions and high rates of inflation have plagued the economy, partly due to the decline in oil prices. To consolidate government revenue, the administration implemented several policies, with the Treasury Single Account being the most notable. Buhari's unwavering personal integrity has always distinguished his public persona. Many Nigerians were impressed by Buhari's apparent honesty in a political climate often characterised by corruption. His administration faced criticism for human rights violations, especially concerning the 2020 End of Special Anti-Robbery Squad demonstrations. The administration's approach to various issues, including the tensions between agriculturalists and pastoralists and the need for economic diversification, has sparked significant discourse. Given these obstacles, his supporters claimed that he made a sincere effort to further Nigeria's development. Many individuals perceived him as a steadfast patriot. Buhari's anti-corruption campaign faced opposition from several industries. Atiku Abubakar and other opposition figures have accused him of shielding dishonest associates. Legal experts, including senior advocate of Nigeria Olisa Agbakoba, described the campaign as politically motivated and discriminatory. Bishop Matthew Kukah was among the religious leaders who criticised the government for using anti-corruption initiatives as tools for political manipulation. Watchdog groups such as Transparency International and the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project criticised the administration for failing to pursue its close associates. Buhari passed away at the age of 82 following a lengthy illness, according to Bayo Onanuga, the spokesperson for President Tinubu. Details of his illness were not disclosed, but it is known that he had been receiving medical treatment in London for a few days prior to his death. Vice-President Kashim Shettima will accompany Buhari's body back to Nigeria, and the governor of Katsina State, Dikko Umaru Radda, announced that Buhari's remains would arrive in Katsina on 15 July 2025, for burial in his hometown of Daura.
