Alexis Badel hopes to capitalise on several pickup rides, headlined by Lucky Touch, after a jockey shortage forced the Jockey Club to lift his suspension for Wednesday night's all-dirt meeting at Sha Tin.
The Frenchman scored a much-needed winner on Sunday when he got the late call-up to replace Angus Chung Yik-lai on Righteous Arion, who held off the previously unbeaten Hong Lok Golf to claim a narrow victory.
Chung, Zac Purton, Vincent Ho Chak-yiu and Keith Yeung Ming-lun were ruled out for multiple weeks after they were injured in falls on Sunday.
Badel will look to add to his 10 triumphs this season with a book of seven rides on Wednesday night, with the Jamie Richards-trained Lucky Touch his strongest pickup mount.
Badel hops aboard Lucky Touch for the second time in the Class Four Po Shek Wu Handicap (1,650m), having partnered the son of Sweynesse two starts ago when he ran second to Take Action at Happy Valley.
Lucky Touch was to be ridden again by Purton, who rode him last start when he rocketed home late to run a close third to the in-form Never Peter Out when trying the dirt for the first time.
'I like Lucky Touch. He was a good run last time,' Badel said.
'Ever Smart is a bit better than his form suggests, I believe, regardless of the draw. There are a couple that should run well.'
Ever Smart was another Purton ride, with the Frankie Lor Fu-chuen-trained gelding pursuing a breakthrough success in the Class Five Diamond Hill Handicap (1,200m).
He ran back-to-back thirds at the Valley before leading from barrier 14 and fading to run 12th to Ho Ho Star at Sha Tin last start.
Badel replaces Chung on Superb Capitalist in the strongest race on the nine-event card, the Class Two Tin Chak Handicap (1,200m).
Trained by Tony Cruz, Superb Capitalist will be out to recapture his best form after misfiring in recent runs.
It will be the five-year-old's first start on the dirt since his debut on the surface in May 2023, which yielded a solid fourth.
Mark Newnham holds the key to the Tin Chak Handicap with Sing Dragon, who chases a fifth victory on the dirt, and consistent sprinter Full Credit.
Capital Delight and Bundle Of Charm also look to have claims.
Strive For Glory, All Are Mine, Monta Frutta and Beato are Badel's other rides on Wednesday night.

Liverpool end Asia tour with win over Japan's Yokohama
Liverpool end Asia tour with win over Japan's Yokohama Wirtz found the net for Liverpool in the second half against Yokohama F Marinos. Photo: Reuters Florian Wirtz scored his first Liverpool goal as the Premier League champions beat Yokohama F Marinos 3-1 in a pre-season friendly in Japan. French forward Hugo Ekitike made his debut for Liverpool, one week after joining from Eintracht Frankfurt for a reported US$92 million. Wirtz equalised after Yokohama opened the scoring early in the second half, the German slamming home a right-foot shot from inside the box in front of over 65,000 fans. "I am really happy that I could score my first goal. I hope there are more to come," said Wirtz, who joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in a blockbuster deal. Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha also scored for Liverpool, who announced the sale of Colombian forward Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich on Wednesday. Liverpool manager Arne Slot said he was happy to see his team come from behind to win but was not pleased with their missed chances. "It could be with a tough training camp and it could be with the heat circumstances," said the Dutchman. "But that's something that we definitely have to improve." Goalkeeper Alisson Becker missed the match after travelling home to Brazil "for private reasons", Liverpool said. Shortly before kickoff, an emotional tribute was given to Diogo Jota, who passed away this month in a car crash. Liverpool dominated throughout but Yokohama opened the scoring when Asahi Uenaka pounced in the 55th minute to beat Giorgi Mamardashvili. Wirtz levelled when he latched onto a Mohamed Salah pass. Nyoni volleyed home a Jeremie Frimpong cross to put Liverpool in front, before Ngumoha dribbled from the halfway line and fired in a shot from the edge of the box. (AFP)

Hong Kong officials to discuss adjusting basketball betting limits with Jockey Club
Hong Kong authorities are planning to engage the Jockey Club for discussions on adjusting the maximum betting limits for basketball to provide a regulated channel for such activities, as the government moves to legalise wagering for the sport. Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs Alice Mak Mei-kuen said on Saturday that lawmakers previously suggested the government review the maximum wagers for basketball as they scrutinised the Betting Duty (Amendment) Bill 2025. She said the Jockey Club, which is set to become the sole licensed basketball betting operator, currently had limited wagers for legal offerings for other sports. Horse racing and football bets are capped at HK$50,000 (US$6,370) per individual wager. Each betting account has a daily total stake limit of HK$500,000. 'The bill provides a legal framework under which the home and youth affairs chief is empowered to issue licences for betting activities. When these licences are issued, licensing conditions can be included,' she told a radio programme. 'We will later discuss with the Jockey Club to assess the technical feasibility and how to handle it so that we can provide a regulated and limited channel for betting, and the public will engage in controlled gambling.'
