Saudi expands transport, digital infrastructure for smooth haj season
Official spokesman for haj operations Saleh Ibrahim Al-Zuwaid said the measure formed part of an integrated strategy that blended logistics, technology and digital systems to enhance safety, comfort, and efficiency for pilgrims arriving from across the globe.
"Our teams are working tirelessly to deliver high-quality services to all pilgrims," he said during a press conference yesterday.
"We urge everyone to strictly adhere to official guidelines and instructions issued by the authorities to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all throughout the haj journey."

In response, the ministry is reassessing the number of vehicles — particularly buses — required to transport pilgrims safely to Arafah.
The Kingdom has announced extensive preparations to accommodate the expected arrival of nearly two million pilgrims for the 2025 haj season.
Tens of thousands of transport vehicles have been mobilised, with intensified operations across air, land, sea and rail networks.
More than 25,000 buses and 9,000 taxis have been allocated under the national transport plan to ensure smooth pilgrim movement.
As part of efforts to ease congestion, the Haramain High-Speed Railway will operate 4,700 trips throughout the haj season, with a capacity to carry up to two million passengers — an increase of 400,000 seats from last year.
In addition, the "Haj Without Luggage" initiative is now being implemented for pilgrims arriving at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah. Under the scheme, pilgrims travel directly to Makkah via train, while their luggage is transported separately to their accommodation through a dedicated logistics system.
"Separating passenger and luggage movement enables faster processing at arrival points and ensures pilgrims can focus on their worship with minimal disruption," said Al-Zuwaid.
Authorities also confirmed the full deployment of the second phase of the haj operations plan, supported by a dedicated technical team. Operations will be further intensified during the Aidiladha period, traditionally among the busiest times of the haj.
Meanwhile, spokesman for the Haj Season Communications and Technology Ecosystem, Saad Saleem Al-Shanbari said there was a significant upgrade in digital infrastructure across the holy sites, with both 4G and 5G coverage in Makkah, Madinah and surrounding areas.
"Internet speeds have reached 264Mbps in Makkah and 336Mbps in Madinah, allowing pilgrims to stay connected with ease," he said.
"Digital infrastructure plays a vital role in enhancing the haj experience — from navigation and communication to real-time information access."
As part of ongoing innovation, the government has trialled several new technologies, including AI-powered crowd management systems, advanced surveillance cameras, and secure communications tools developed in collaboration with security agencies.
According to the Saudi Communications and Information Technology Commission (CITC), of the 29 new technologies introduced this year, 13 had already been successfully implemented in previous haj seasons.
These include systems for managing healthcare services and tracking pilgrim movement.

Long-stay tourism boom ignites ‘cool economy' in China highlands

'Since summer began, we've had almost no vacancies,' he said. A steady stream of guests from the sweltering nearby regions of Sichuan and Chongqing is replacing the usual ebb and flow of tourists in this capital city of Yunnan Province. As scorching heat blankets much of China, Yunnan and Guizhou provinces, with average summer temperatures of 15 to 21 degrees Celsius, are experiencing the explosive growth of 'cool summer residencies'. Yunnan alone hosted 2.8 million long-stay visitors in the first half of 2025, a surge of 45.4 per cent year on year. These visitors stayed an average of 91 days, 11 days longer than the previous year. In the province's Qujing City, famed for its cooler summers, companies like Licheng Residential Leasing are transforming idle homes into managed residences. This summer, Licheng has provided over 100 beds and three meals daily through contracted residential homes in the city's Niujie community, hosting over 200 guests so far. Industry experts believe that traditional tourism often funnels spending into transportation and tickets, limiting local economic benefits, whereas tourism engaging local residents retains more spending within the community. In Qujing, for example, dining accounts for 40 per cent of long-stay visitors' spending, vastly exceeding the 10 per cent typical of short-stay tourists. The city welcomed 2 million long-stay visitors last summer, peaking at 270,000 daily, generating 23.6 billion yuan (around US$3.3 billion) in revenue. Leveraging its national forest park, Xishui County in Guizhou has developed 28 summer residence projects across six townships, now housing 36,000 households, mostly from other provinces. Since June, hotels and homestays have reported peak seasons. Dai Bin, head of the China Tourism Academy, highlighted the shift of the tourism model 'from simply leveraging cool climates to integrating culture, wellness and learning'. He cited the example of children joining forest rangers for plant identification in a nature science camp while parents learn local crafts, as well as one in Yunnan's Dali that combines cool air with holistic healing through yoga in the forest. Recognising the potential, China's National Development and Reform Commission issued guidelines in 2023 to boost summer tourism, urging better products and infrastructure. According to Rao Xiangbi, deputy director of Yunnan's culture and tourism department, long-stay visitors now flock not just from nearby Sichuan and Chongqing, but increasingly from Guangdong, Zhejiang, and even the northernmost Heilongjiang Province, with over 80 per cent being young and middle-aged people. Tabung Haji to roll out digital passport submission for Haj pilgrims, eyes smoother process
KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 — Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) is working to introduce a digital passport submission system for Malaysian Haj pilgrims to minimise the need for them to visit TH branch offices in person, the Dewan Rakyat was told today. Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Zulkifli Hasan said the initiative is among TH's ongoing efforts to enhance and improve efficiency in Haj management for the comfort of the pilgrims. 'May the administration and management of Malaysia's Haj pilgrimage continue to be among the best in the world, God willing,' he said when replying to a question from Datuk Adnan Abu Hassan (BN-Kuala Pilah). Zulkifli said various measures have been implemented by TH to ensure optimal management of the pilgrimage, including the introduction of a digital Haj medical record book, which helps medical personnel check pilgrims' health records online. 'This also aims to prevent the loss of physical medical books. In addition, the Haj mobility application was introduced to assist staff in coordinating pilgrims' movements throughout the Haj season,' he said. Meanwhile, Zulkifli said all eligible Malaysian pilgrims successfully obtained their Haj visas, including those who encountered technical issues during biometric registration via the Saudi Visa Bio mobile application. He said the achievement was the result of close cooperation between TH, the Embassy of Saudi Arabia, and relevant technical agencies. However, TH is aware that a small number of pilgrims experienced difficulties registering biometric data through the app. 'The issue stemmed from technical factors such as mobile device incompatibility, inaccurate facial or fingerprint scanning, and the need for ongoing technical system upgrades in line with current developments,' he said when replying to a question from Datuk Seri Dr Ismail Abd Muttalib (PN-Maran). Zulkifli said TH has taken several proactive measures to help ease pilgrims' use of the application, including providing complete guidelines and support through its official portal at for downloading and using the Saudi Visa Bio app. 'TH also conducts briefing sessions during the basic Haj courses nationwide. These guidelines are also clearly outlined in the haj offer letter issued to each pilgrim. 'TH customer service centres at headquarters and in all state branches are also available to assist pilgrims facing technical issues or in need of additional support,' he added. For pilgrims aged 80 and above, he said they are automatically exempted from the biometric scanning process, while special exemptions are granted to pilgrims with facial or fingerprint impairments, subject to medical verification and supporting documents uploaded through the Saudi Visa Bio system. — Bernama
