Kia President and CEO Ho Sung Song honored at 2025 Autocar Awards
- Honored for positioning Kia at the forefront of electrification and steering the mobility industry toward a smarter future with new PBV vision
- Kia EV3 named as 'Best Electric Car' by Autocar on account of its compelling space and practicality, rapid charging speed and convincing electric range
SEOUL, South Korea, June 24, 2025 /CNW/ -- Kia Corporation (Kia) President and CEO Ho Sung Song has been honored with the prestigious Issigonis Trophy at the 2025 Autocar Awards.
Named after the legendary automotive designer and inventor Sir Alec Issigonis, the Trophy is Autocar's most prestigious award. Presented annually, it recognizes individuals who have made a significant contribution to the automotive industry through innovation, leadership and exceptional business performance.
Mark Tisshaw, Editor of Autocar, commented, "We're delighted to present Ho Sung Song with the Issigonis Trophy. We've been hugely impressed by the way Mr Song has led Kia and the success he has achieved for the company and its continued growth. He has championed great design and improved branding and confronted the challenge of electrification by making ever better and ever more desirable cars that are among the industry's very best."
On receiving the Issigonis Trophy, President Song remarked, "It is a great honor to receive this year's Issigonis Trophy. I would like to express my sincere thanks to the Autocar team for this recognition — not just of me, but of the incredible Kia team worldwide, whose dedication and belief in our mission continue to drive the brand forward."
He continued, "Our commitment remains clear. To design with intention, to lead with responsibility, and to continue delivering experiences that inspire. We accept it with gratitude — and vow to keep pushing boundaries with purpose."
Kia under President Ho Sung Song's leadership
Since his appointment as President of Kia in 2020, President Song has led a successful transformation of the company. Under his leadership, Kia's mid- to long-term 'Plan S' strategy has progressively positioned the brand as a global leader in electrification and sustainable mobility solutions.
A key part of this transformation has been the global roll-out of Kia's new brand identity and the launch of an award-winning range of hybrid and electric vehicles. These include the Kia EV9, named World Car of the Year in 2024, and the EV3, which was awarded both World Car of the Year and UK Car of the Year in 2025.
Kia has also taken a pioneering approach to the commercial vehicle market with its revolutionary Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) strategy, a core element of 'Plan S'. In 2024, Kia unveiled its PBV concept range at CES in Las Vegas and announced the development of a dedicated PBV factory in Korea. Built for business, Kia's first dedicated all electric commercial vehicle, the PV5, is planned to launch in global markets this year. Kia plans to sell 250,000 PBVs globally in 2030.
Prior to becoming President and CEO of Kia, Mr. Song held a range of leadership positions, including Head of Global Operations, President of Kia Motors Europe and Head of Kia Motors Corporation Export Planning Group.
Throughout this time, President Song has brought to bear his extensive experience across the automotive value chain as well as his expertise in overseas operations, leading Kia's successful transition throughout a period of significant change in the global automotive industry.
Kia EV3 named 'Best Electric Car'
The Kia EV3 was also named 'Best Electric Car' at the 2025 Autocar Awards. In an exceptionally competitive category, it stood out not only for its impressive 375-mile electric range and fast-charging capability, but also for delivering that performance in a compact, desirable and affordable package.
"The EV3 is the standout addition to the affordable electric car ranks in 2025. It not only extends the design appeal of the statement EV9 into the heart of the electric car market, but also brings with it compelling space and practicality, impressive rapid charging speed, excellent EV drivability and convincing electric range to the party — all for an appealing price," said Mark Tisshaw, Editor of Autocar.
He continued, "The EV3 is an electric car customers can afford and one that will really work for them. It's a cracking all-rounder, and very convincing."
Since its global debut last year, the EV3 has continued to build momentum in markets around the world. It has already received significant international recognition, including the 2025 World Car of the Year and Red Dot's prestigious 'Best of the Best' award. Notably in the UK, the EV3 has seen exceptional success — becoming the best-selling EV in the UK retail market in Q1 and earning the 2025 UK Car of the Year. These achievements follow in the footsteps of its larger sibling, the EV9, which swept the same awards in 2024.
President Song closed the evening by remarking, "The Kia EV3 being named 'Best Electric Car' at the 2025 Autocar Awards — along with its growing list of accolades — underscores Kia's commitment to innovation. With our Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) strategy now underway, and a model lineup soon to span from the highly anticipated EV2 all the way up to the premium EV9, we're well positioned to lead the global shift to electrification."

FortisBC to issue call for power to help meet energy demand in the Southern Interior
New electricity generation projects will help meet customers' growing energy needs and support economic development KELOWNA, BC, July 3, 2025 /CNW/ - FortisBC Inc. (FortisBC) is planning to launch a call for power later this year as the next step to its Request for Expressions of Interest (RFEOI) issued in 2024, to support economic growth and help meet customers' growing electricity needs in communities across the Southern Interior region. The call for power will be conducted by way of an invitation-only competitive process, with organizations that were selected through the RFEOI process being invited to participate. This initial call for power is one of the next steps in FortisBC's work to expand its electricity system and increase power generation in the region by working with companies that can deliver local power and Indigenous communities in the Southern Interior. "By supporting local power projects and working with Indigenous organizations, we can expand electricity generation to ensure homes and businesses in the Southern Interior have the energy they need." said Joe Mazza, vice president of energy supply and resource development. "This call for power is an important step in delivering safe, reliable and affordable energy—driving economic development and strengthening communities for the future." In 2024, FortisBC issued an RFEOI for new power to identify projects from lower carbon and renewable 1 sources in British Columbia that could add up to 1,100 gigawatt hours (GWh) of energy supply for its approximately 190,000 electricity customers by 2030. Through the RFEOI, FortisBC received more than 80 submissions representing about 20,000 GWh of electricity. The call for power is the next step in FortisBC's work to increase power generation in the region and includes two key components. Firstly, FortisBC recognizes the importance of economic reconciliation and projects must have a minimum of 25 per cent Indigenous equity ownership. Therefore, it is seeking submissions with comprehensive Indigenous participation plans. Secondly, in the call for power, FortisBC will focus on wind projects that can directly connect to its electricity system in the Southern Interior and provide energy in winter months when customer demand for power is highest. This targeted competitive procurement process will enable FortisBC to focus on projects that align closely with its strategic objectives of acquiring energy to address its immediate needs to meet high demand for electricity during the coldest days of the year. FortisBC may issue additional calls for power in the future. The Government of British Columbia recently passed legislation to modernize permitting and regulation of renewable energy projects. The new legislation establishes the BC Energy Regulator as the single window for permitting renewable energy projects in accordance with strict environmental standards. This legislation and upcoming regulations could help bring more power to FortisBC's customers faster. "FortisBC's upcoming call for power is great news for British Columbia as we build our supply of clean energy to drive our economy forward," said Adrian Dix, Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions. "With a focus on wind projects in the Okanagan region and a requirement for Indigenous participation, the call for power will increase B.C.'s supply of renewable electricity to serve growing communities and businesses in the Southern Interior, create local jobs and investment, and generate important opportunities for Indigenous communities." "CEBC applauds FortisBC for taking bold action to ensure its customers have access to clean, reliable, and affordable energy for generations to come," said Kwatuuma Cole Sayers, executive director, Clean Energy Association of British Columbia (CEBC). This call for power will strengthen and diversify our grid while reinforcing B.C.'s position as a global leader in Indigenous ownership and electrification. CEBC members are eager to help address rising demand in the Southern Interior while advancing reconciliation, driving local revenues, and keeping well-paying jobs where we need them most — right here in B.C." The call for power is part of the many actions FortisBC is taking to increase the ability of its electricity system to meet the growing energy needs of its customers in the Southern Interior, safely and reliably. As part of its long-term plan, it has been upgrading and building new substations in Kelowna, Grand Forks, Salmo, South Slocan, Beaver Park, Fruitvale and Trail to serve these growing areas. In addition, the British Columbia Utilities Commission recently approved FortisBC's plan to invest $133 million 2 by 2027 in new power infrastructure projects, including upgrading the Saucier, Glenmore, Duck Lake and DG Bell substations in Kelowna, increasing the capacity of its substations in Kaleden, Keremeos, Blueberry Creek, Christina Lake and upgrading the two main transmission lines serving customers in South Okanagan. All levels of government must confirm Alstom Thunder Bay plant as builder for TTC subway cars contractor
THUNDER BAY, ON, July 3, 2025 /CNW/ - Unifor is demanding all three levels of government make an open and official commitment to ensure jobs for workers at Unifor Local 1075 at the Thunder Bay Alstom plant are secured with a deal to build future TTC subway cars. "We don't understand the hold up. Unifor has been patiently waiting for all three levels to sign on and commit to these important manufacturing jobs for Canadian workers – but so far, we haven't seen any ink on paper," said Unifor National President Lana Payne. "The federal and provincial governments as well as the City of Toronto have committed the necessary funding and publicly declared their support for a sole-source procurement to Alstom in Thunder Bay. " If Alstom is awarded the contract, Unifor members would build the 55 new subway cars, intended to replace the current cars on the Bloor-Danforth line, which will reach their 30-year life service line next year. The federal government has indicated its support for the transit to be build in Canada, at the Thunder Bay facility including in Nov. 2024 when it announced $758 million in federal funding to support this transit project. In April, Ontario Premier Doug Ford urged Toronto to have its subway cars manufactured at the Alstom plant in Thunder Bay and to consider a sole-source deal with Alstom to support provincial workers, amid Donald Trump's ongoing trade war. At that time, Ontario Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria sent a letter to Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow requesting the procurement be sole-sourced to Alstom Thunder Bay. In June, Chow announced her support for the sole-source procurement to Alstom in Thunder Bay. In response to U.S. tariffs, Toronto had already moved in March to bar American firms from bidding on contracts. "And yet here we are, still waiting with workers at Thunder Bay facing layoffs. If there was ever a time to use Canadian procurement dollars to support Canadians and, in this case, Canadian-built transit it is now," said Payne. "We need procurement policies to match the intentions we have been clearly hearing from our political leaders." In January, Ontario committed to spend nearly $500 million to refurbish 181 GO Transit bi-level rail coaches, which is expected to support hundreds of jobs for at the Alstom plant in Thunder Bay. "With the ongoing trade war, Made-in-Canada has never been so important," said Unifor Unifor Local 1075 President Justin Roberts. "Our members are highly skilled and ready to build this transit. This should be a no-brainer given the times we are in. Let's get these subway cars built here at home." Unifor is Canada's largest union in the private sector, representing 320,000 workers in every major area of the economy. The union advocates for all working people and their rights, fights for equality and social justice in Canada and abroad, and strives to create progressive change for a better future. SOURCE Unifor

CSA issues guidance about regulatory concerns with certain asset or business acquisitions Français
VANCOUVER, BC, July 3, 2025 /CNW/ - The Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) today published guidance about regulatory concerns with certain asset or business acquisitions – primarily taking place in venture markets – including concerns with misleading disclosure that could constitute market manipulation. The guidance relates to reporting issuers that distribute a significant number of securities to acquire assets or businesses that appear to have little or no actual value or operating history, and paying what appear to be significantly inflated prices. CSA Staff Notice 51-366 Regulatory Concerns with Certain Asset or Business Acquisitions explains the regulatory concerns with these types of acquisitions and reminds issuers of the requirements that may apply. It does not introduce any new requirements. Key regulatory concerns with these transactions include: The potential for misleading disclosure or misrepresentations in a reporting issuer's continuous disclosure record. A potential lack of a reasonable basis for the value ascribed to the asset or business being acquired. Potentially untrue or unbalanced promotional campaigns to support the acquisition. Whether a reporting issuer records all or a portion of the consideration paid as intangible assets or goodwill based on unreasonable or unsupportable assumptions, and impairs them shortly after the acquisition. Staff will continue to apply additional regulatory scrutiny to reporting issuers involved in acquisitions that appear to raise the concerns set out in the staff notice. The CSA, the council of the securities regulators of Canada's provinces and territories, co-ordinates and harmonizes regulation for the Canadian capital markets.
