Rafizi, Nik Nazmi's resignations won't hinder progress of NESP, says Deputy Economy Minister
KUALA LUMPUR (June 5): The resignations of two key ministers will not disrupt the progress of the National Environmental, Social and Governance Strategic Plan (NESP) or the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), both of which are nearing completion, said Deputy Economy Minister Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib.
To a question on the progress of NESP and 13MP, Hanifah Hajar confirmed that the 13MP is almost ready to be presented to the Cabinet, while work on the NESP is actively ongoing.
'All ministries understand the importance of ESG (environmental, social and governance), and our civil servants have been working on it with clear ideas they want to implement,' she told reporters on the sidelines of the Forward Faster Symposium 2025 hosted by the UN Global Compact Network Malaysia and Brunei (UNGCMYB) here today.
It was reported that the 13MP document is expected to be tabled in Parliament next month.
However, she noted that a definitive timeline for the delivery of the NESP has yet to be confirmed.
This follows the resignation of Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli as Minister of Economy and the resignation of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, which will take effect on July 4.
Earlier in her keynote address at the symposium, Hanifah Hajar said the NESP is aligned with global ESG frameworks and complements six pillars under the National Sustainability Strategic Framework and Industry ESG.
'The NESP is a comprehensive initiative aimed at guiding Malaysian businesses toward ESG compliance and sustainable practices. It will support Malaysian business entities, especially small and medium enterprises in phases, to move toward ESG reporting and even beyond compliance,' she said.
The one-day symposium brought together over 200 participants, including high-level executives, sustainability practitioners, and business leaders.
With the theme 'Accelerating Corporate Sustainability Commitments for a Resilient Future,' the event featured in-depth discussions and high-level dialogues on the evolving role of business in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The discussions were seen as timely amid economic headwinds and rising geopolitical tensions, with Malaysian corporate leaders increasingly strengthening their ESG commitments and positioning sustainability as a strategic tool to manage risk, drive long-term value, and contribute to national development. – Bernama

Palm opens higher on strong Dalian oils, crude oil prices
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian palm oil futures inched higher on Wednesday, tracking stronger rival Dalian oils and crude oil prices, though weaker Chicago soyoil capped the gains. The benchmark palm oil contract for October delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange gained 17 ringgit, or 0.4 per cent, to 4,271 ringgit (US$1,008.98) a metric ton in early trade. The contract rose 0.28 per cent in the previous session. Dalian's most-active soyoil contract rose 0.83 per cent, while its palm oil contract added 0.52 per cent. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade were down 0.19 per cent. Palm oil tracks price movements of rival edible oils, as it competes for a share of the global vegetable oils market. Oil prices ticked up in early trading after rising more than 3 per cent in the previous session as potential supply shortages came into focus after US President Donald Trump gave Moscow an abbreviated deadline toward ending the war in Ukraine. Stronger crude oil futures make palm a more attractive option for biodiesel feedstock. European Union soybean imports for the 2025/26 season that began in July reached 736,447 million metric tons by July 27, down 37 per cent from the same period a year earlier while palm oil imports fell by 53 per cent to 118,863 million tons, the European Commission data showed. Indian importers have bought a record 150,000 metric tons of soyoil from China in rare purchases, as a supply glut prompted Chinese crushers to sell at a discount to India's traditional suppliers from South America, four trade sources said. The ringgit, palm's currency of trade, weakened 0.05 per cent against the dollar, making the commodity slightly cheaper for buyers holding foreign currencies. Asian stocks rose modestly on Wednesday, with investors cautious after trade talks between the US and China ended without any substantive agreement and ahead of the Federal Reserve's policy announcement.

Home Ministry to present Sosma amendments to parliament after Cabinet approval
KUALA LUMPUR: The Home Ministry plans to amend the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) following numerous calls from rights groups to review or repeal the law. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said Putrajaya was in the final stages of reviewing Sosma and expected to complete the policy memorandum soon. "The ministry intends to present the proposed amendments to Sosma at a parliamentary session, subject to Cabinet approval," he said in a written parliamentary reply last night. He said 73 offences under the security law were identified and assessed to ensure its implementation was in line with the Federal Constitution, Malaysia's international obligations, and the principle of "due process of law." "The ministry has and will carry out engagement sessions with various stakeholders, including the police, Attorney-General's Chambers, Malaysian Human Rights Commission (Suhakam), the judiciary and legislative bodies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), academics and legal experts, and other stakeholders."
