Skegness Beach has been condemned as the grossest beach in the country.
A day at the beach—there's nothing like it. The feeling of sand between your toes; the roar of the waves; the cool taste of a Mr Whippy. Added to this list of familiar British sensations is something a little more unpleasant.

Visitors to Skegness in Lincolnshire have complained of some horrors lurking within the sand. Several reported rubbish issues, with one Tripadvisor reviewer condemning the beach as 'dirty and run down,' and another explaining that their children were 'pulling out cups, straws and items of clothing from the sand.'

More alarming still, the most recent review from June 2025 recalled: 'Avoid the grass dunes between the car park and the beach. Not only do you have to dodge the dog waste, you also have to deal with human waste and serviettes covered in faeces, left for you to tread in. This is what happens when you charge 40p to use the toilets.'

Another reviewer piled in: 'Not been for a couple of years and it's really gone downhill. Everything is overgrown with weeds and the place is filthy.' While a similarly unhappy beachgoer wrote: 'Dirty water, expensive car park, bad sand, not good for swimming and very dangerous. It's overall bad—nothing good about it.'
As harsh as this criticism is, many others completely disagree. Overall, Skegness has a positive 4.3 out of 5 stars on Tripadvisor, with the overwhelming majority of comments being very positive.
One enthusiastic sunseeker wrote in May: 'Skegness is a proper seaside resort. It has everything you expect from a trip to the coast and a lot more besides—from the iconic Clock Tower to its many attractions. But for us, the best part was the beach: immaculate golden sands with plenty of places to buy ice cream, fresh food and drinks (including beer and wine). Well done Skeggy!!!'
The ranking of the UK's dirtiest beaches was compiled by BusinessWaste.co.uk.

In second place is Margate Main Sands. Out of 851 reviews, 50 mentioned litter, giving it a percentage of 4.4%. The beach ranks as number 5 of the 75 things to do in Margate, yet many people speak of rubbish issues. Reviewers describe incidents of broken glass, dog poo, and human urine. Others talk about the nostalgia of visiting as children, but many report disappointment on returning.
Formby Beach in Merseyside lands in third place, with 3.83% of reviews mentioning litter (39 out of 731 reviews). The North West beach is well-reviewed overall with a score of 4.2, but many still report litter issues. One reviewer from May 2025 found the car park full by 10:30 a.m. and the beach already crowded and covered in rubbish. Many posts speak of picnics left behind, disposable BBQs strewn across the beach, and even drug paraphernalia.

Is it safe to travel to Tunisia? Latest advice as Foreign Office issues warning

Tunisia – with its year-round warm weather, sandy beaches and UNESCO World Heritage Sites – is a popular spot for holidaymakers, welcoming up to 9.4 million visitors every year. But the country's tourism industry has suffered in the wake of a series of terrorist attacks since 2015, with recent political events sparking fresh travel warnings. According the UK Foreign Office, 'ongoing hostilities in the region and between Israel and Iran could escalate quickly and pose security risks.' Protests held throughout Tunisia in response to the Israel-Palestine conflict have remained peaceful, but the Government agency urged visiting British nationals to be cautious in case demonstrations become violent. It also highlighted the increased threat of terrorism – particularly in certain areas – stating that 'terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Tunisia'. On July 16, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) issued a statement advising 'against all but essential travel to within 20km of the Tunisia-Algerian border in El Kef and Jendouba Governorates.' Although the majority of visitors stay in hotspots like Tunis, Djerba and Carthage, the city of El Kef attracts some heritage tourism due to its richhistory, while the wider north-west region – home to the Tell Atlas mountain range – is popular with hikers and climbers. However, the area has now been added to the FCDO's Tunisia warning list due to possible terrorist activity and military operations, alongside the southern part of the country along the border with Libya. A previous no-travel alert for the archaeological site of Chemtou wastaken down by the ministerial body, but it noted that 'no foreign travel can be guaranteed as safe' and visitors must 'take personal responsibility' for theirsafety while abroad. This includes keeping an eye on media reports for the latest information on developing situations, staying vigilant of their surroundings, and following the instructions of local authorities. According to the government body, British tourists should avoid all travel to: The Chaambi Mountains National Park The designated military operations zones: Mount Salloum Mount Sammamma Mount Mghila In addition, it recommends against all but essential travel to: Mount Orbata Areas north and west of the town of Ghardimaou in Jendouba Governorate, including El Feidja National Park Within 20km of the Tunisia-Algeria border in El Kef and Jendouba governorates, south of the town of Jendouba Kasserine Governorate, including the town of Sbeitla Within 10km of the rest of the Tunisia-Algeria border south of Kasserine Governorate Within 10km of Mount Mghila In this region, the FCDO warns against all travel to: The militarised zone south of the towns of El Borma and Dhehiba Within 20km of the rest of the Tunisia-Libya border area north of Dhehiba The town of Ben Guerdane and immediate surrounding area All but essential travel should also be avoided within 75km of the Tunisia-Libya border, including Remada and El Borma. While the chances of being caught up in a terrorist incident are low, the police's Counter Terrorism unit tells UK travellers: 'It is important everyone stays alert and knows what to do if the worst was to happen.' Before a holiday, you should check the latest FCDO travel advice and ensure you have comprehensive travel insurance. And in the unfortunate event you do find yourself in an emergency while there, you should take the following steps: RUN – to a place of safety. This is better than trying to surrender or negotiate. – to a place of safety. This is better than trying to surrender or negotiate. HIDE – it is better to hide than confront. Barricade yourself in, turn your phone to silent and use only when it is safe to do so. – it is better to hide than confront. Barricade yourself in, turn your phone to silent and use only when it is safe to do so. TELL – Make sure you know the local emergency numbers in the country you are travelling to. If you have a holiday planned in any of the areas on the Tunisia no-travel list, your first port of call should be to get in touch with the company you booked with. The FCDO explains: 'Travel companies, including airlines, often take our advice into account but cancelling or rescheduling a flight ticket, holiday, tour or excursion is a decision that can only be taken by the travel company and the customer.' More Trending You should also contact your travel insurance provider, as they may allow you to make a claim if you cancel because of a change in FCDO travel advice. This is often dependent on the policy; some only pay out if the advice is to avoid all travel rather than 'all but essential' Certain insurers also require the local or national authorities to state it's unsafe to travel there. If your holiday provider or airline is operating there as normal and there are no advisories, you won't get any cancellation cover. If your holiday destination is near an affected region, but is still considered to be safe by the FCDO, according to Good To Go Insurance, 'you are unlikely to be able to cancel or change your trip without losing money.' Britain's ‘DIRTIEST beaches' revealed where sand strewn with broken glass & faeces-covered napkins – is yours on list?

BRITAIN'S dirtiest beaches have been revealed, with visitors reporting human faeces and drug paraphernalia strewn across the sand. With the school summer holidays now just around the corner and more hot weather on the way, many families are likely making plans to take a trip to the beach. However, there are some beaches you might want to avoid... Skegness According to plastic waste experts from the dirtiest beach in the UK is Skegness Beach, in Lincolnshire. 4 The popular seaside resort may boast a bustling pier and an exhilarating theme park, but is also has the most amount of Tripadvisor reviews that mention litter. One tourist described the beach as "dirty and run down", whilst another complained that their children were "pulling out cups and straws and items of clothing out of the sand". Shockingly, the most recent review for the beach, posted in June 2025, described seeing "human waste and serviettes covered in faeces." However, many others described it as having "miles and miles of sandy, beautiful beaches" and as being "glorious." Margate Main Sands Margate Main Sands ranks second on the list, with visitors complaining about broken glass, dog poo and rubbish. One reviewer said: " The whole place is a dive! 4 "It seems to be used as the toilet of Kent." Another reviewer fumed: "Filthy, filthy, filthy. Rubbish is everywhere in the sea and on the beach. Glass bottles floating in the sea and used nappies all over the beach." However, many others had a very pleasant experience at the Kent beach, with one person describing it as being a "beautiful and safe beach", and another stating that it has a "brilliant white beach." Formby Beach Formby Beach, known for its sand dunes and diverse wildlife, is third on the list, with visitors describing seeing the sand littered with drug paraphernalia, disposable BBQs and litter. 4 One reviewer said: "The beach was such a disappointment, it was full of house bricks and broken glass and resembled a building site rather than a beach." A second person said: "The problems are multiple. Parking, litter, overcrowding, violence, drink and drugs." The research also found that the cleanest beaches in the UK are Southwold Pier, Sandsend Beach and Horsey beach which all have zero reviews mentioning litter. Graham Matthews, expert at Business Waste said: "Litter on the UK's beaches turns our natural beauty spots into an eyesore and poses a huge environmental threat to marine life. "Each year, as the weather heats up, we see a sharp rise in people flocking to the seaside, but sadly, many don't clean up after themselves. It's common to find food packaging, disposable BBQs, and even human and animal waste scattered across our shores. 'All this unsightly litter ruins the enjoyment of our beaches, but it also threatens local wildlife. 'Beachgoers must take responsibility for the impact of their visit. You should always bin any litter or take it home with you if this isn't possible."
