Aircraft deal sparks bid for bigger returns, says Loke

RIO DE JANEIRO: Malaysia's significant aircraft purchase orders, totalling US$20bil (RM84bil), provides an excellent opportunity for the country to attract more investments from the selling firms, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
He added the heavy purchase orders paved the way for negotiations with manufacturers like Airbus to invest in Malaysia for training and boosting the supply chain.
'We want them to help make us a hub in this region. This will ensure that the purchase is not a one-way process. We will benefit in many other ways,' he said after the week-long working and official visits by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to several countries.
Both Loke and Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz have accompanied Anwar on the trip to Rome, Paris and Rio de Janeiro.
Other ministers who joined the visit were Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.
Loke said he visited Toulouse in France, where the aircraft manufacturer is based, and was told that the waiting list for aircraft delivery stood at 8,000 orders.
'This is a long backlog to wait for our orders to be delivered. It's a good thing our PM was here to talk to Macron (French President Emmanuel Macron) to help speed things up,' he added.
Malaysia, he said, also spoke to officials from Embraer, a prominent aircraft manufacturer in Brazil about the possibility of some purchases.
It was reported that AirAsia reached a tentative agreement to purchase as many as 70 extended-range Airbus single-aisle jets that could reach US$12.3bil (about RM52bil).
Malaysia Airlines (MAS) ordered 20 more A330neo widebody planes, in a deal worth US$7.5bil (RM31.7bil), according to calculations before industry discounts.
Earlier, Anwar also spoke about aircraft purchases, saying: 'We cannot simply keep buying from Airbus alone. We need alternative suppliers too.
'We are working with AirAsia, which has ordered dozens of aircraft. We've had discussions with Amirul Feisal, the MD of Khazanah Nasional, and talks are ongoing between AirAsia and MAS regarding further purchases. We are choosing to diversify rather than rely solely on Western companies.'
Anwar said Malaysia placed conditions that benefitted the nation: part of the production must happen in Malaysia, or a base must be set up in Malaysia, and products must be sellable to a number of other countries.

Call for RCI on judicial affairs challenges Anwar's leadership, says Pasir Gudang MP

PETALING JAYA: The nine PKR MPs must be prepared for the possibility that their action calling for a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into judicial affairs could trigger the fall of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's administration, says Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim. In a strongly worded statement, Hassan described the demand, led by former Economic Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, as having serious political consequences, effectively turning Anwar, who holds constitutional powers over judicial appointments, into a key suspect if the RCI proceeds. "Without that, the call by the nine MPs not only damages Anwar's image but also places the PKR president 'under the guillotine', akin to what was seen during the French Revolution," said Hassan in a statement on Tuesday (July 8). From a democratic perspective, Hassan admitted the MPs' actions could be seen as a healthy check in a parliamentary system. "Politically, however, it marks a rare direct revolt against a sitting party president and prime minister — an unprecedented development in PKR. "Have the nine MPs fully considered the long-term national interest and the ideals of genuine reform?" "If their answer is yes, then it is clear that an internal rebellion is taking place within PKR," he said He added that forming an RCI requires agreement from the Prime Minister and the Cabinet. As Anwar returns from an overseas trip, Hassan urged the Prime Minister to address the matter wisely and decisively, stressing that the issue of judicial integrity is not a small one. Despite the turmoil, Hassan reaffirmed his personal support for Anwar, vowing to stand by the Prime Minister and the unity government. "I still have faith in Anwar Ibrahim's leadership and will defend his position as Prime Minister," he added.

High Court orders TikTok user to pay RM100k to Rosmah for defamation

KUALA LUMPUR: The High Court has ordered a TikTok account holder to pay RM100,000 in damages to Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor for defamation. Judge Datuk Ahmad Shahrir Mohd Salleh ruled that Ku Muhammad Hilmie Ku Din must compensate Rosmah after finding the defamatory content had harmed her reputation. The court dismissed the claim for exemplary damages, citing insufficient evidence. However, general and aggravated damages were awarded at RM100,000, with an additional five per cent annual interest until full payment. Ku Muhammad Hilmie was also ordered to pay RM20,000 in legal costs. The defamatory video, posted on March 22, 2023, allegedly linked Rosmah to supernatural practices and immoral conduct. Judge Ahmad Shahrir noted that such accusations carry severe reputational consequences in a society that values religious and moral integrity. Despite Rosmah's prior conviction in the Sarawak solar hybrid case, the judge clarified that this should not influence the defamation damages assessment. Her legal team, led by Datuk Abu Bakar Isa Ramat and Mohamed Baharuden Mohamed Ariff, successfully argued that the TikTok post had unjustly tarnished her public image. Rosmah initially filed the suit in September 2023 after Ku Muhammad Hilmie failed to respond, leading to a default judgment in May last year. She claimed the video portrayed her as engaging in sinful and idolatrous acts, damaging her standing as the wife of a former prime minister and a charity patron. - Bernama
