One of the most common ways couples meet is also the least ‘satisfying' — and leads to marital troubles: study

Dating app algorithms haven't cracked the code on heaven-made matches just yet.
Collectively, dating apps like Tinder, Hinge and Bumble have amassed hundreds of millions of users, and increasingly, they're becoming a more popular way for singles of all ages to date.
Indeed, dating apps are arguably the best way to find first dates and no-strings-attached lovers, but psychology researchers wanted to know whether committed relationships born online are built to last.
In light of this growing demographic of digitally devised married couples, a new study, published in Computers in Human Behavior, explored how the place a couple meets impacts their relationship down the road.
The study revealed that not all of these marriages born in the mainframe hold up to couples who began their relationships IRL.
The study issued a survey to 923 married adults based in the US, and around half of the studied adults met their spouse online.
According to the study, online daters consistently reported less satisfying and stable marriages than offline daters did, leading to what the researchers called the 'online dating effect.'
While differing individual factors like age, prior dating experience, and personality traits can all do their fair share of romantic wreckage, the study focused on 'external influences on courtship such as societal marginalization and geographic distance.'
These external influences can impact emotional and physical vulnerability as well as conceptions of external approval.
With online dating, couples are typically matched up via an algorithm that detects user data and previous activity to suggest potential compatibility.
These couples also typically don't face the same initial pressure from friends or families as online daters tend to introduce their partners to their loved ones after the relationship becomes more established.
While this phenomenon can be liberating for the couple at first, it can also lead to a sense of insecurity among one or both partners, especially when considering the lack of initial external approval and the amount of time already invested in the relationship — which may lead an individual to tough it out, though these couples are admittedly less likely to make it to marriage.
Typically, the couples in the study who met online were younger and more recently married, which could also factor into feelings of instability.
Although the study's pool of online daters reported less satisfying marriages overall than couples who met in person, the quality of these connections was still considered relatively higher than in comparable studies in the past, the researchers clarified.
Not all couples who meet online are guaranteed to glitch. As The Post previously reported, online dating can take on a dark side. Those who are insecure about their looks, socially anxious or extra-sensitive to rejection are more likely than others to use dating apps in a problematic way, and often, become obsessed with these platforms.
In some cases, a preoccupation with online dating can result in chemical imbalances that can even affect libido levels, so swipe carefully — depending on how you operate, you could end up with a future spouse or hormone instability.

‘Flying Car' Industry Taxis Toward Takeoff

'We wanted flying cars; instead, we got 140 characters,' venture capitalist Peter Thiel, himself an early Facebook investor and thus key financier of the first social media age, quipped in 2013. Since his remark, the character limit for posts on Twitter — rechristened X under Thiel's fellow PayPal mafia barone Elon Musk — has climbed to 280 (or 25,000 for paid subscribers). As for cars, they're still not flying. A US-based startup, backed by Japan's Toyota, and a freshly capitalized initiative in China could change that as soon as next year. READ ALSO: Trump's 'Biggest Deal Ever' With EU Prompts Yawn From Wall Street and Can Tesla and Samsung Find Salvation in Each Other? Shares to the Sky 'Flying car' is a colloquial term best associated with futures imagined by sci-fi filmmakers. But outside the dystopian cityscapes of Blade Runner or The Fifth Element, here on Earth, they go by a much wonkier industry term: electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) craft. There's also no futuristic hovering technology — current eVTOLs in development by Santa Cruz-based, Toyota-backed Joby Aviation and Chinese carmaker XPeng get off the ground with old-fashioned propeller and rotor technology. In both cases, that has been more than enough to send their shares into liftoff: Joby, which already has a small fleet of air taxis conducting test runs, last week announced plans to expand its California facility to build 24 of its eVTOL craft per year. It also plans to pursue commercialization by seeking certification from the Federal Aviation Administration and expand production to an Ohio facility where it hopes to mass-produce as many as 500 crafts every year. Propping up the effort is 22% shareholder Toyota, which has invested roughly $900 million in the publicly traded startup (shares are up 122% this year). And then there's Xpeng Aeroht, Xpeng's flying car division, which earlier this month said it secured $250 million in Series B funding to expedite the mass production of its Land Aircraft Carrier, a Cybertruck-resembling all-terrain vehicle with a detachable, helicopter-like air module. Xpeng Aeroht is planning mass production of the vehicle, commencing next year in Guangzhou, with a roughly $280,000 price tag and a facility with a projected annual capacity of 10,000 units. Its parent company's shares are up 59% this year. Toyota, meanwhile, has expanded its exposure to the segment as another startup with its backing, Japan-based SkyDrive, obtained initial certification for an eVTOL earlier this year, which could eventually lead to commercialization. The barriers to adoption vary, depending on the market. For example, Xpeng Aeroht produces a smaller eVTOL, the X2, which is technically for sale in Australia, but regulatory uncertainty means using one legally may be at least a year away (and require a pilot's license). Dubai's the Limit: Joby had initially targeted offering commercial passenger services in Dubai, where Xpeng Aeroht tested an eVTOL back in 2022, by the end of this year. That timeline has been bumped to early 2026, seven years after Blade Runner but well ahead of The Fifth Element's setting in the 23rd century. This post first appeared on The Daily Upside. Grant Thornton to expand industry-leading advisory practice by joining forces with nearshore pioneer Auxis

Move will accelerate growth for Grant Thornton's full-service advisory practice — and bring Auxis' unique, high-value offerings to new multinational markets CHICAGO & FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., July 29, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Grant Thornton, one of the largest brands in professional services, and Auxis, a leader and pioneer in Latin American outsourcing and business modernization services, today announced that they will join forces. By acquiring Auxis, Grant Thornton will enhance its advisory services entity: US-based Grant Thornton Advisors LLC — which provides a range of services centered on strategy, transformation and operations. These include offerings across M&A, technology, finance, operations, sales and marketing, data, AI, cybersecurity and risk. Grant Thornton Advisors LLC also provides a complete slate of tax services. The transaction is another important step as Grant Thornton creates the industry's first full-service advisory offering, amplified by AI and advanced technologies. Clients will have access to Auxis' industry-leading and tech-enabled nearshore-outsourcing services — which span finance, information technology, human resources, customer service and specialized industry solutions. Founded in 1997, Auxis helps organizations modernize and scale their business operations through innovative processes, leading technologies and world-class shared services. It supports Fortune 1000 and upper-middle-market organizations across a range of industries. These include consumer packaged goods, retail, restaurants, healthcare and financial services, among others. Auxis' tailored solutions help organizations harness rapidly advancing technology, navigate rising costs and mitigate talent shortages. It was one of the first providers to recognize the benefits of nearshoring for US companies. As a result, demand for its services has surged. This momentum has reinforced its founding vision: to bring everything Latin America has to offer to the broader business community, from real-time collaboration to cultural alignment to top-tier talent. Its outsourcing services are powered by an AI and automation practice that has garnered many awards. For example, UiPath, the world's number one AI and automation platform, has named Auxis a "Partner of the Year" and an "Agentic Automation Fast Track Partner." Additionally, respected analyst firms such as Everest Group and ISG have recognized Auxis as a top transformation and outsourcing company, citing its unique nearshore-centric delivery model. With Grant Thornton, Auxis will be able to deliver a significantly broader portfolio of services with a truly multinational footprint — empowering clients to leverage the strengths of the top outsourcing destinations across Latin America, Asia, Europe and the Middle East. The transaction will complement the rapid growth of the Grant Thornton Advisors LLC multinational platform. In recent months, Grant Thornton Advisors LLC has announced transactions with several firms to join the platform, including firms in Ireland, the UAE, Switzerland/Lichtenstein, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, the Cayman Islands and the Channel Islands. "Bringing Auxis into the Grant Thornton platform is a milestone moment for us," said Jim Peko, CEO of Grant Thornton Advisors LLC. "Auxis' proven shared services, nearshoring expertise and tech-enabled solutions are a natural fit for our world-class model. This deal allows us to deepen client engagement and enhance our offerings — delivered with speed, scalability and quality." That's why we're building something truly unique: a full-service advisory practice powered by AI and grounded in human insight. Bringing Auxis into the fold will strengthen that vision — they have the talent, tools and nearshoring model to help us deliver enhanced value to our clients." The deal with Auxis will further expand the Grant Thornton platform's footprint by adding Auxis' more than 1,400 highly-skilled, multilingual team members primarily located in Costa Rica and Colombia — with headquarters in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. "Joining the Grant Thornton team provides Auxis the scalable and robust platform required to successfully help clients modernize their operating models — helping them thrive in a business environment marked by ever-increasing change and technology disruptions," said Raul Vega, CEO of Auxis. "We are excited to integrate our innovative and tech-enabled, client-first services model into Grant Thornton's leading Advisory Services practice. It could not be a better fit. Grant Thornton's deep client relationships and reputation for excellent quality will enable us to deliver our value-added, technology-backed services to an even broader international clientele." Vega will become a member of the leadership team for Advisory Services at Grant Thornton, reporting to Puthiyamadam. Auxis' existing leadership team will continue to oversee operations for its current client base, ensuring the same high-quality service and trusted relationships, now backed by enhanced scale, resources and innovation. The deal is subject to standard closing conditions. It is expected to close later this year. Baird served as financial adviser to Grant Thornton.
