RWC 1995 anniversary: Remembering Joost van der Westhuizen
That was just one special moment in a career littered with heroic acts from Van der Westhuizen, who is undoubtedly one of the greatest Springboks to have ever donned the green and gold.
Tragically, Joost is one of five Springbok players from that RWC final who has passed away.
In the second part of this remembrance series, we look back at the career of the legendary scrumhalf.

Van der Westhuizen added a Tri-Nations and two Currie Cup titles to his honours roll in a career that lasted eight years beyond the 1995 World Cup. He went on to represent the Boks at the 1999 and 2003 World Cups before retiring as the then most-capped Springbok.
Capped 89 times for the Springboks Joost became the country's first choice scrumhalf in the mid-to-late nineties to early 2000s retiring a rugby legend with a career test try tally of 38 earning him the record of being the scrum-half with the most tries in Test Rugby.
Inducted in the International Rugby Hall of Fame in 2007 he represented South Africa in three Rugby World Cups in 1995, 1999 and 2003. Of course one of his most iconic moments came during the famous 1995 triumph when he completed an incredible tackle on Lomu.
He is also the only Springbok to captain his country in both the Sevens and the 15-man games in World Cups.
After retirement, stints in front of the cameras at SuperSport followed briefly before he moved into other avenues of business.
Van der Westhuizen was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2011, an illness he fought until he passed away at the age of 45 in 2017. The J9 Foundation, founded in 2012, assists other MND sufferers, and Van der Westhuizen's family remains actively involved with this charity.

Desiree Ellis remains committed to Banyana Banyana despite Wafcon struggles

Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis says she'll continue to 'trust the process' as her team turns over a new chapter after an underwhelming continental outing. After getting out of the group stage comfortably, they were not convincing in the knockout stage as they beat Senegal on penalties in the quarter–final and lost 2-1 to arch-rivals Nigeria in the semi-final. Banyana were not at their best in the third/fourth place play-offs either as they lost to Ghana 4-3 on penalties after the match ended 1-1 in regulation time Friday night. Their shortcomings in the crucial stages of the tournament somewhat hinted at the toll the team took prior to the tournament following another bonus row with Safa. Ellis said they were at the tournament to win it during her post-match press conference at Stade El Arbi Zaouli in Casablanca though. 'Everyone that goes to a tournament has the ambition of winning it - Nigeria have been the only country that has defended it, though they didn't at times,' Ellis said. 'Equatorial Guinea won it twice, but we didn't get there - but it was so, so close. I think what happened there (against Nigeria) took a lot out of the players. 'We knew that we were going to play in the play-offs match, but we unfortunately didn't do well today.' Banyana's shortcomings in Morocco have seen some members of the football fraternity call for Ellis to be released, citing that she's out of sorts. This is due to the fact that the team needs a new direction and strategy given that some key players have already called time on their international careers, while others are close to. Jermaine Seoposenwe retired from international football after Wafcon, saying she's taking care of her well-being, while Thembi Kgatlana withdrew from being considered for the event, citing personal reasons. Ellis, though, insists that she's still the right coach to usher Banyana to a new era having been the brains behind Banyana's first qualification for the World Cup in 2019 and triumph at Wafcon in 2022. 'I have been with the team since 2014 as an assistant, 2016 as an acting coach and 2018 as the head coach - so it's a process,' Ellis reflected. 'Unfortunately, the process is always to win. That is the thing with fans, they don't see the bigger picture. So, we trust the process. 'We are also a team in transition. We trust the process, but fans don't trust the process - all they want is results. 'They don't see what you are doing and how the team is evolving, they don't see those things. When you are in the national team, fans want results.'

Star-studded Bulls see off brave Western Province in Currie Cup clash
Bulls Currie Cup coach Phiwe Nomlomo will be happy with their start to the season following their win over Western Province. The Bulls put in a workmanlike performance to beat a brave Western Province team 48-23 in a Currie Cup match in Cape Town on Saturday evening. Bulls coach Phiwe Nomlomo's side came into the match as heavy favourites after selecting a very strong team filled with a lot of quality and experience. While most of their United Rugby Championship players are resting or with the Springboks, they still managed to field seasoned pros such as Marvin Orie, Boeta Chamberlain and Sintu Manjezi. Province, on the other hand, fielded seven debutants in their run-on team, including a few Blitzboks, who have been roped in to bolster their squad in the absence of their Stormers and Springbok players. And it was clear from the first minute that Province were going to be under the pump, especially at set-piece time. The Bulls scored five of their six tries in the first half, dominating the collisions and getting penalties as Province tried to stop the bleeding.

Lions maul Sharks in dominant Currie Cup opener
The Lions scored seven tries to crush the Sharks 46-5 at Ellis Park, avenging last year's Currie Cup final defeat. Jarod Cairns crossed early to open the scoring before Rabz Maxwane finished off a slick move sparked by Angelo Davids' break. Nico Steyn chipped crossfield for Maxwane to gather and score, giving the Lions a well-earned 10-0 lead inside 20 minutes. The Sharks lacked cohesion and discipline, with winger Phiko Sobahle receiving a yellow card for a deliberate knockdown near halftime. That infringement gifted the Lions a penalty try and a numerical advantage just before the break at a buzzing Ellis Park. Maxwane made full use of the extra space to bag his second try, pushing the Lions into a commanding 24-0 lead. Sobahle prepared to return from the bin when Jean Smith was shown yellow, reducing the Sharks to 14 men again early on. Lions debutant Angelo Davids took immediate advantage, slicing through the broken defence for a well-taken try in front of the home fans. The Sharks struggled to exit their own half and made little headway against a physically dominant Lions pack and lively backline. While Sobahle finally crossed for a late consolation try, the game had long since drifted beyond the visitors' reach in Johannesburg. Rynhardt Jonker burst through the midfield to score before Layton Horn dotted down soon after to compound the Sharks' misery. The Lions showed superior structure, finishing ability and composure as they exacted revenge for last season's heartbreaking Currie Cup final loss. With confidence high, the Lions now shift focus to a testing home fixture against Western Province at Ellis Park next Saturday.
