
Google unveils Ironwood TPU for the age of inference
Google emphasizes that Ironwood signifies a pivotal shift in AI development. The focus is moving from responsive AI models, which provide real-time information for human interpretation, to proactive models capable of generating insights and interpretations autonomously. This transition, described as the 'age of inference,' envisions AI agents that proactively retrieve and generate data to collaboratively deliver insights and answers. Ironwood is engineered to meet the significant computational and communication demands of this next phase of generative AI. The system scales up to 9,216 liquid-cooled chips interconnected by a new Inter-Chip Interconnect (ICI) network, spanning nearly 10 MW. It is a key component of Google Cloud's AI Hypercomputer architecture, designed to optimize hardware and software for the most demanding AI workloads. Developers can leverage Google's Pathways software stack to harness the combined computing power of tens of thousands of Ironwood TPUs.
The design of Ironwood is focused on efficiently managing the complex computation and communication demands of 'thinking models,' including Large Language Models (LLMs), Mixture of Experts (MoEs), and advanced reasoning tasks. These models require substantial parallel processing and efficient memory access. Ironwood is designed to minimize data movement and latency while performing large-scale tensor manipulations. To support the demands of these models, Ironwood TPUs utilize a low-latency, high-bandwidth ICI network for coordinated, synchronous communication at full TPU pod scale. Ironwood will be available to Google Cloud customers in two sizes: a 256-chip configuration and a larger 9,216-chip configuration. The larger configuration, scaling to 9,216 chips per pod, delivers substantial computing power. Each individual chip has a peak compute of 4,614 TFLOPs. Ironwood's memory and network architecture is designed to ensure efficient data availability to support peak performance at this scale.
Additionally, Ironwood incorporates an enhanced SparseCore, an accelerator for processing ultra-large embeddings used in ranking and recommendation workloads. This expanded SparseCore support extends the range of workloads that can be accelerated, including applications in finance and science. Google Cloud highlights Ironwood's significant performance gains alongside a focus on power efficiency. The TPU is designed to deliver more capacity per watt for customer workloads, featuring advanced liquid cooling solutions and optimized chip design. Ironwood also offers a substantial increase in High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) capacity and dramatically improved HBM bandwidth. Enhanced Inter-Chip Interconnect (ICI) bandwidth further facilitates faster communication between chips, supporting efficient distributed training and inference.
Google Cloud emphasizes its experience in delivering AI compute and integrating it into large-scale services. Ironwood is presented as a solution for the AI demands of the future, offering increased computation power, memory capacity, ICI networking advancements, and improved power efficiency. Hitachi Vantara has announced new capabilities for Virtual Storage Platform One Software-Defined Storage (VSP One SDS), now available on Google Cloud Marketplace. The new capabilities bring enterprise features to the public cloud, including two-way asynchronous replication, thin provisioning and advanced data compression. These enhanced features provide enterprises with greater flexibility, data efficiencies, enhanced disaster recovery options and simplified data mobility across on-premises and cloud environments. As hybrid cloud deployment architectures grow, organizations increasingly combine public and private clouds to meet evolving business needs. According to a 2025 cloud adoption report, nearly 80% of companies now use multiple public clouds and 60% operate several private clouds, highlighting the rising need for consistency and control in complex infrastructures. As AI significantly increases the data storage requirements for businesses, recent industry research shows that 47% of IT and security leaders struggle with limited visibility across hybrid environments – making it more challenging to manage risk and maintain control. With its availability on Google Cloud Marketplace, VSP One empowers customers to deploy storage resources across cloud and on‑premises environments through a single management interface with no re-architecting required. New capabilities include thin provisioning and compression that can further reduce cloud storage costs by up to 40%, enabling customers to maximize efficiency and performance while minimizing overhead. Additionally, two-way asynchronous replication enhances disaster recovery strategies by allowing primary and secondary sites to operate as both source and target. VSP One is engineered for continuous availability, with a target of 99.999% uptime. This helps reduce costs while enabling native migration to and from any storage platform and cloud. It supports quicker recovery from unplanned outages and helps organizations maintain business continuity with greater confidence. Ras Al Khaimah Tourism Development Authority (RAKTDA) has reported record-breaking performance for the first half of 2025, with over 654,000 visitor arrivals, marking a 6 per cent year-on-year increase, alongside a 9 per cent rise in tourism revenues. Raki Phillips, CEO of RAKTDA, said the results reflect the strength of the emirate's tourism strategy, adding, 'From expanded air connectivity and hotel developments to a robust calendar of experiences, we are firmly on track to welcome over 3.5 million visitors annually by 2030, while delivering long-term, sustainable value.' Key achievements in H1 2025 included: 654,000 visitor arrivals-the highest ever for a six-month period; 9 per cent year-on-year growth in tourism revenues; 36 per cent increase in MICE and weddings revenues; Strong growth from markets with direct flights: Romania (+65 per cent), Poland (+56 per cent), Uzbekistan (+47 per cent), Belarus (+30 per cent); Record half-year arrivals from India (+25 per cent), China (+9.2 per cent), Russia (+7 per cent) and the UK (+5 per cent). RAKTDA also announced several high-profile hotel developments to support plans to double the number of hotel keys by 2030. These include Fairmont Al Marjan Island (250 keys), Four Seasons Resort at Mina Al Arab (150 keys), Taj Wellington Mews Al Marjan Island (336 apartments), and NH Collection Ras Al Khaimah (156 keys).
