Trump wins major victory as Congress passes flagship bill
A jubilant Trump said the bill's passage would supercharge the US economy "into a rocket ship" -- glossing over deep concerns within his own Republican Party that it will balloon the national debt and gut health and welfare support.
Speaking to reporters as he headed for a rally in Iowa to kick off America's 250th birthday celebrations, the president called the spending package "the biggest bill of its kind ever signed."
A small group of Republican opponents finally fell into line after Speaker Mike Johnson worked through the night to corral dissenters in the House of Representatives behind the "One Big Beautiful Bill."
The bill squeezed past a final vote, 218-214. The White House declared "VICTORY" on social media and said Trump would sign the bill into law on Friday, the July 4th Independence Day holiday.
The timing of the vote had slipped back to Thursday as Democratic House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries spoke against the bill for nearly nine hours to delay proceedings.

Watch the video here: Three officials suspended On Wednesday, the BBMP suspended three officials revenue inspector Ramesh, tax collector Peddaraju, and assistant revenue officer C Senthil Kumar, for dereliction of duty in the ongoing caste census exercise for Scheduled Castes. According to the suspension order issued by BBMP East Zone Zonal Commissioner Snehal R on July 2, the officials failed to ensure that the enumerators completed the survey process before affixing stickers on homes. The instructions required that stickers be placed only after contacting residents, completing the enumeration, and uploading the collected data via a mobile application. However, it was found that in several cases, the stickers were affixed without any contact with homeowners, in violation of the protocol. In response to the criticism, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah defended the intent behind the exercise and urged the public not to panic. 'Is there any problem in applying online? We will do enumeration online, or approach door-to-door and in the camps. You just have to tell your caste using any of the three means. This is related to only the Scheduled Caste,' he told reporters according to PTI. The incident has triggered criticism from opposition leaders, who have accused the Congress government of mishandling the caste census despite the sensitive nature of the exercise and the significant public funds allocated to it. Among the Sensex constituents, Bajaj Finance, BEL, Bajaj Finserv, HUL, and HDFC Bank opened on a positive note, gaining as much as 2.2%. In contrast, Trent, Tech Mahindra, Tata Steel, and M&M registered losses. "There are no triggers to break the 25200-25800 Nifty range immediately. Even while trading within this range the market is resilient. This resilience is supported externally by the strength of the mother market US where S&P 500 and Nasdaq are at record highs and domestically by the strong and sustained flows into the market, which has made DIIs sustained buyers in the market. The cap to the upside of the range is put by the tepid earnings growth and expectations of modest earnings growth in FY26. Investors should watch for possible changes in the earnings growth trajectory, the indications of which will be available in the Q1 results, which will start coming soon. Outperformances in results are likely to be company-specific rather than sector-specific. For instance autos are likely to report modest numbers, but TVS, Eicher and M&M can deliver better than industry numbers. Similarly in financials Bajaj Finance and Sriram Finance may outperform. Therefore, market action is likely to be stock-specific," said VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments Limited.

Kerala Congress leader Ajay Tharayil has criticised the party's youth leaders in Kerala for abandoning 'khadar' (Malayalam word for khadi) in favour of colourful shirts, questioning why they are imitating the DYFI, the youth wing of the CPI(M).In a Facebook post, Tharayil, who's also a KPCC political affairs committee member wrote, 'Khadi is a message.
