Nirav Modi's Brother Arrested In US On Extradition Request From India
Nehal Deepak Modi, younger brother of fugitive businessman Nirav Modi, has been arrested in the United States following an extradition request issued by Indian authorities.
Nehal Modi, a Belgian national, was arrested on July 4 in the United States by local authorities acting on a Red Corner Notice issued by Interpol at the request of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED). His arrest comes after a prolonged legal and diplomatic process, during which he challenged the Red Corner Notice but ultimately failed to have it revoked.
The charges against Nehal Modi stem from his alleged involvement in the multi-billion dollar Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam, a banking fraud first exposed in early 2018, in which his elder brother, Nirav Modi, is the principal accused. Indian authorities allege that Nehal Modi played a role in helping Nirav destroy key evidence, intimidate witnesses, and obstruct the investigation in the aftermath of the scandal.
Nehal Modi is also accused of laundering black money worth thousands of crores earned from the scam with the help of his brother. Investigation has revealed that Nehal distributed this money through shell companies and transactions done abroad.
The next hearing in the extradition case will be on July 17. During this time, a bail application can be filed on behalf of Nehal Modi, but the US prosecution has already made it clear that it will oppose the bail.
The PNB scam is estimated to have caused losses of over Rs 13,500 crore (approximately USD 2 billion) to the Indian banking system. Of this, Nirav Modi is accused of siphoning off Rs 6,498.20 crore, while his uncle Mehul Choksi is alleged to have diverted Rs 7,080.86 crore.
Both Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi fled India in January 2018, just weeks before PNB reported the irregularities to law enforcement. Nirav Modi was arrested in the UK in March 2019 and remains in custody in a London prison, contesting extradition to India. Mehul Choksi, now in Antigua, faces separate proceedings including a challenge to his citizenship.

DJB Regains Financial Powers To Independently Execute Major Projects

The board will now be authorised to sanction all projects over Rs 50 crore independently. While the DJB chairperson (water minister) can approve projects worth Rs 25-50 crore, the CEO has the power to clear projects costing between Rs 5 crore and Rs 25 crore, and the members can give their sanction to projects worth up to Rs 5 crore. Officials said the senior officers will also have enhanced financial powers now. "This will lead to better decision-making at every level of the board and reduce unnecessary delays in execution," said an official. The CM said Yamuna cleaning plans remained only on paper for a long time due to the cumbersome and lengthy approval processes, but the bottleneck has now been removed. "Our govt is committed to delivering result-oriented governance, not entangling people in paperwork," the CM said. 6 masked men uproot SBI ATM with Rs 18 lakh in 14 minutes in Rajasthan
In a daring late-night heist, six masked men uprooted and took away an entire State Bank of India ATM containing approximately Rs 18 lakh in cash from Ajitgarh town in Rajasthan's Sikar district. Police said the entire operation was executed in just 14 incident, which occurred between 2 am and 2:30 am, has sparked fear among local residents and triggered a multi-team police masked assailants arrived in a black Scorpio vehicle and targeted the SBI ATM located near a government school on Chomu road. The security guard on duty, Gajendra Singh, was brutally assaulted and tied up with ropes. His mouth was gagged, and he was reportedly beaten with an iron rod for resisting. State a leader in cow protection, livestock development: UP govt
The Uttar Pradesh government on Saturday said the state was the nation's frontrunner in cow protection and livestock development, accounting for 16 percent of India's cattle population. It said that cows are not only revered in UP, but are also powering the rural economy, creating jobs and strengthening livelihoods. The government claimed, citing the 20th Livestock Census (2019),the state is home to 1.90 crore cattle, including 11.84 lakh stray cattle, a figure that has grown from over 12 lakh in 2017, before formal policies were in place. The government further claims, after Yogi Adityanath became Chief Minister in 2017, cow protection became a top priority in the state. On January 2, 2019, UP became the first state in the country to launch a policy for the protection of stray cattle. According to the governmentdata there are 7717 cow shelters in the state, housing 12.52 lakh (1.25 million) government spends Rs 50 per animal per day, around Rs 7.5 crore daily, for their care. For every large cow protection center, Rs 1.60 crore is being invested in construction. According to the offcial data the state produces 5,500 tonnes of cow dung daily, which is being used to make various products like vermicompost, flower pots, cow-based lamps, cow-dung wood, incense sticks, Panchgavya, Jeevamrit, and Ghanamrit. According to the government, the state has a Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) of rupees 25.63 lakh crore of which the livestock sector contributes rupees 1.67 lakh crore. The state also produces 390 lakh metric tonnes of milk every year, strengthening the rural economy. These schemes provide 40–50% subsidy and rewards of Rs 10,000–15,000 through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to over 6,500 cattle rearers. The government data stated, to encourage artificial insemination in cattle, 3.08 lakh free procedures were done in 2024–25. Under the Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund and National Livestock Mission, 44 and 292 projects are being implemented with investments of Rs 1,094.38 crore and Rs 144.29 crore, respectively. Under the UP Global Investors Summit (UPGIS) 2023, 578 dairy and livestock units have attracted investments worth Rs 2,221.99 crore and created 1.23 lakh jobs. Through schemes like the Nandini Krishak Samriddhi Yojana, the government is helping set up units with 25 milch cows, with 50% of the beneficiaries being women. Under the Fodder Policy 2024, Napier grass is being grown on 230 hectares of land, aiming to produce 1.73 lakh quintals of green fodder. In addition, 9,449.82 hectares of pasture land have been freed from illegal occupation, and fodder has been planted on 5,458.93 hectares. Women's participation in cow dung and urine-based product units has made many rural women self-reliant, the data reveals.
