San Miguel back in familiar territory after claiming top seed ahead of Philippine Cup quarters
The Beermen, who failed to catch the quarterfinals bus last Commissioner's Cup, did so after crushing NorthPort with a dominant 126-91 win at the Ynares Center Antipolo to assure themselves the top spot that comes with a twice-to-beat bonus.
CJ Perez, who admitted they were all disappointed following their early exit last conference, led the way this time with 24 points laced with five rebounds, one steal, and one assist while Jericho Cruz and Don Trollano each chipped in 17 markers as the Beermen ended the elimination with an 8-3 card.
June Mar Fajardo finished with a double-double effort of 10 points and 11 rebounds together with four assists and three steals while Marcio Lassiter chimed in with 10 markers and four boards.
But San Miguel isn't overly focused on their seeding, especially as they are set to take on a dangerous Meralco side that took the All-Filipino crown away from them last year.
"Nasa top seed kami ngayon pero it doesn't matter kasi lahat ng teams ngayon sobrang nag-improve and last conference, hindi sanay 'yung San Miguel na wala sa playoffs and lahat kami parang disappointed," Perez said.
"So ang ginawa namin ngayon ay nag-focus sa top four at dahan-dahanin namin 'yung playoffs until finals."
For San Miguel head coach Leo Austria, their preparation for the quarterfinals began as early as their game against the also-ran Batang Pier.
The Beermen wasted no time imposing its dominance, cruising to an early 57-38 lead with the troika of Fajardo, Lssiter, and Perez powering a 13-5 run to close out the first half.
Perez then dropped 11 of his total output in the third frame that stretched the gap to a massive 25-point separation, 92-67. It was all San Miguel from that point with Jeron Teng completing a three-point play that sent them to their biggest lead at 111-74 halfway through the payoff period.
"This game is very important to us. A win will get us to top four with a twice-to-beat advantage and if we lost and Ginebra wins, we'd have been at number five so we treated it as the start of a best-of-three [series] so nakaisa na kami," Austria said.
"We need one more game sa quarterfinals to get to the semifinals. Credit sa mga players kasi at the start of the conference, they worked really hard."
NorthPort, which ended its campaign with a dismal 2-9 win-loss record, leaned on Joshua Munzon as the veteran guard poured in 19 points, five rebounds, four assists, and one block while Cade Flores posted13 markers and 12 boards.
Scores:
San Miguel 126 – Perez 24, Cruz 17, Trollano 17, Tautuaa 14, Fajardo 10, Lassiter 10, Brondial 8, Tiongson 7, Teng 4, Cahilig 3, Rosales 2, Calma 2, Ross 0.
NorthPort 91 – Munzon 19, Flores 13, Balanza 11, Yu 11, Taha 9, Abueva 5, Nelle 5, Cuntapay 5, Bulanadi 5, Kwekuteye 5, Onwubere 3, Nava 0.

Caitlin Clark: WNBA Commissioner's Cup pay 'makes no sense'
Jul 1, 2025; Caitlin Clark puts on a Commissioner's Cup Champions hat after defeating the Minnesota Lynx at Target Center. (Photo: Jesse Johnson-Imagn Images/REUTERS) WNBA superstar Caitlin Clark took time out of celebrating her Indiana Fever's Commissioner's Cup win to call out the desire for better pay for the league's athletes. The injured Clark didn't play in the Fever's win Tuesday over the Minnesota Lynx, but in the postgame celebration on Instagram livestream, she pointed out the disparity in the financial rewards for winning the Commissioner's Cup and winning the WNBA Finals. "You get more (money) for this than you do if you're the (WNBA Finals) champion," Clark said to the camera Tuesday night. "It makes no sense. Someone tell (WNBA commissioner) Cathy (Engelbert) to help us out." Each rostered player on the winning Commissioner's Cup team earned up to $30,000 as part of the majority portion of the $500,000 purse, per multiple reports. For comparison, players on the team that wins the WNBA championship reportedly receive $20,825. In another postgame video Tuesday, Clark referred to the in-season tournament final as the "Cathy Cup." Clark's comments come as WNBA players are negotiating for a new collective bargaining agreement amid surging popularity in the league. The WNBA registered its highest attendance in 26 years for an opening month to the season as well as record TV ratings. The league announced in June that 400,000 fans attended games since the season tipped off on May 14 through the end of the month, its highest since nearly the league's inception; the WNBA began play in 1997. Further, more than half of all WNBA games were sellouts, a 156 percent increase year over year, according to the release. Additionally, games are averaging 1.32 million viewers across all network partners, nearly tripling last season's average (462,000 viewers), per the league's June 10 release. Clark won't be back on the court when the Fever return to action Thursday against the visiting Las Vegas Aces. She will miss her fourth game in a row (counting the non-regular-season Commissioner's Cup final) because of a left groin ailment. A strained left quad kept Clark out for five games from May 28-June 10. --Field Level Media/Reuters

NBA: Lakers sign center DeAndre Ayton
The Los Angeles Lakers and free agent Deandre Ayton agreed to terms Wednesday afternoon, shortly after the center cleared waivers and became an unrestricted free agent, according to multiple media reports. Ayton made headlines in recent days after he and his most recent team, the Portland Trail Blazers, mutually agreed to forgo the final year of his contract and negotiate a buyout, allowing him to reach free agency. Between money owed to him by Portland and his new deal with Los Angeles, Ayton is set to earn $34 million this season, per reporting from ESPN. Despite being a seven-year pro with 398 NBA games on his resume, Ayton is still just 26. His birthday is July 23. A former No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns, Ayton has averaged 16.4 points, 10.5 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game in 398 career games (391 starts). New Lakers teammate Luka Doncic was the No. 3 choice in that same draft. He was a part of the 2018-19 All Rookie first team, though arguably his greatest achievement as a professional was being part of the Suns team that lost in a memorable series with Milwaukee Bucks in the NBA Finals in 2021. Portland acquired him as part of a three-team trade with Milwaukee and Phoenix that sent All-Star guard Damian Lillard from the Trail Blazers to the Bucks on Sept. 27, 2023. --Field Level Media/ Reuters
