FC Utrecht 4-0 Kaizer Chiefs: Who FIRED, who FLOPPED
Amakhosi coach Nasreddine Nabi opted to start with the majority of the team that went down 2-1 to Vitesse on Tuesday but the decision backfired. The team failed to find their rhythm throughout the game which allowed Utrecht to play with freedom.
The Dutch side enjoyed most of the possession in the early stages, and it came as no surprise when Siebe Horemans slotted home from close range after Chiefs failed to deal with a set-piece.
Utrecht dominated possession throughout the half against a toothless Amakhosi side.
Adrian Blake's brace in the second half took the game away from Kaizer Chiefs as Utrecht piled on the pressure.
Coach Nasreddine Nabi responded by ringing the changes for the final 30 minutes by changing the entire team, but that was a little too late as the fourth goal came in late on.
Standout performers
Thabo Cele
'The Mayor' showed why he is highly rated in the PSL. Having only joined Amakhosi in January, the 28-year-old looked lively in midfield and often combined with Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and Makabi Lilepo.
Nkosingiphile Ngcobo
The 25-year-old looked dangerous going forward, and often the Dutch defence struggled to contain him. He looked much more in control when he had to ball compared to MduduzI Shabalala
Makabi Lilepo
The Congolese once again showed up and was a nuisance on the right-hand side. He is a sure starter for Nasreddine Nabi and it's easy to see why.
Brandon Petersen
The experienced keeper looked vulnerable every time the Utrecht players entered the 18-yard area. He failed to organize his defense and at times he couldn't deal with crosses. He was to blame for two goals of the three goals he conceded.
Miguel Inacio
The Angolan defender was often found wanting and failed to deal with a number of dangerous attacks. His partnership with Nkhanyiso Shinga and Aden McCarthy looks suspect but might improve as the season continues.
Kaizer Chiefs will be back in action Saturday against NEC Nijmegen and will look to improve from Utrecht defeat.

Orlando Pirates star sends emotional farewell message to fans
Orlando Pirates are reshuffling their squad. Veterans Paseka Mako and Miguel Timm are two of the players who have left. Former Gallants, Chippa and Wits midfielder Miguel Timm is moving on to new pastures after three years with Pirates. The schemer has opened up on his exit from the Buccaneers. Details: Saleng returns to Orbit College 'I'm writing this with a smile, reflecting on my past 3 years with Orlando Pirates. Thank you to the Chairman for allowing me to carry the burdens and hopes of millions of the Orlando Pirates family. 'Thank you to everyone I've crossed paths with during that time, creating unforgettable memories and relationships with the technical team and my teammates. I still share a special bond with them today. 'I've fulfilled my duties, and what I was brought to the club to do, which was to contribute to bringing back silverware on a regular basis and seeing the happy people like never before! I tried to understand everyone and everything that is a part of this big institution and embody what being a Buccaneer is, as best as I could from the day I arrived to my very last day at the club. 'A special mention to the best supporters!!!! Thank you for allowing me to represent millions of you over the years; you will always have a special place in my heart. Once, Always.' Attacking midfielder Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo has been on the fringes since his move in 2022. Time is officially up for the diminutive former Marumo Gallants star. Monnapule Saleng's exile from the first team at Pirates has been a puzzling issue. Now, with the signing of Oswin Appollis and the continuing emergence of Mohau Nkota, his pathway to first-team football is blocked. The board is presumably protecting the player's future resale value, especially if he impresses while out on loan and attracts bids for his services. EXCLUSIVE: Rubin Hermann's journey down the N4 has prepared him for Proteas T20I call-up
Rubin Hermann is excited about his maiden call-up to the Proteas T20I squad. Picture: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix The South African domestic system endures plenty of criticism for its perceived lack of quality. That it doesn't provide enough opportunities to prepare players for international competition. But yet this same pipeline somehow continues to spit out players that defies this theory. The latest being top-order batter Rubin Hermann. The dynamic left-hander is set to complete the full cycle, having played at every senior level en-route to his maiden call-up to the Proteas T20I squad, for the upcoming Tri-Series against hosts Zimbabwe and New Zealand in Harare. 'Yeah, I've had a journey. I've been through every single level this country has to offer,' Hermann told Independent Media. 'Before I actually went to Division I, I spent two years in Division B. 'So, to be fair, I had to take the N4 to North West. Video Player is loading. 'So, I've not skipped a level in the system, but I'm so thankful for my journey because it has allowed me to really understand my game and learn who I was, and how I want to play my game.' The 'journey' is also in complete contrast to younger brother Jordan - who's been identified by none other than Proteas legend AB de Villiers as a "future star of the game" after hitting the lights out for the Warriors, Sunrisers Eastern Cape and South Africa 'A' from the outset. Watching this from afar could easily have been played on Rubin's mind, but instead Jordan's success only motivated him to work harder to achieve his own goals. 'I think our journeys are just so different. To be honest, I think the way he broke into the system and when I broke into the system, was obviously two different pathways. 'So, I've got a very big respect for how his path worked. It was just two different worlds, if you compare it directly. And to be fair to him, yes, he's one of the more mentally strong cricketers that I know. 'He just understood his game at a very young age very, very well. And that just laid a platform for him to come to the scene and do very well. And then, regardless of the system, and how it worked, and the opportunities that he was offered, compared to maybe when I was at his age. It was completely different, if it makes sense. 'But he rocked up to the system, and he just lit the world on fire. So, he did so well. So, that obviously did inspire me so much. Obviously, watching the first two seasons of SA20, being in the box, being in the grandstand, thinking, yes, I really want to be there. 'I've always said, I want the right opportunity at the right times. And I think that's how it worked out. I needed to go away to Division B and work on my game, work on myself, figure out who I wanted to be, because I've got more of a dynamic game that took a bit more figuring out if it makes sense.' Rubin's dynamism came to the fore during last season's SA20 when he grasped his opportunity with a half-century on debut for Paarl Royals before reverse-sweeping his way to further success by finishing as the tournament's fifth top run-scorer with 330 runs at an average of 41.63 at the strike rate of 128.08. The Proteas T20I squad for the Tri-Series in Zimbabwe. Picture: CSA Image: CSA The 28-year-old will be eager for a similar start to his international career at the Harare Sports Club, and is certainly excited about the prospect of representing his country. 'My whole career, I've always had to fight for opportunities, and when opportunities came, I've always been relentless on taking opportunities,' he said. 'So, I think I've always had to wait for an opportunity. I will be ready. I've developed a lot of mental resilience from my journey. 'To be fair, I felt pressure before, and pressure is not playing SA20 or playing international cricket. Pressure is being in Division B, knowing that if this is my way to my last chance in my career, if I don't come out of here, my career is over. 'So, I think that's where pressure lies, is when I was in Division B, fighting to get my career started again, if it makes sense. And then, everything from there is just a privilege and me just being present. That's the difference for me between expectation and pressure. So, I've just been loving, enjoying batting, and just being me.'

Kaizer Chiefs sign experienced PSL striker for free?
Kaizer Chiefs have the opportunity to land a PSL-ready, experienced striker on a free transfer. Will they pounce? So far, the club has signed Paseka Mako, Thabiso Monyane, Nkanyiso Shinga, Ethan Chislett and Flavio Silva. Is TS Galaxy marksman Dzenan Zajmovic next? Pitso Mosimane's son heads to Italy 30-year-old Bosnian Dzenan Zajmovic bagged seven goals and two assists in the league last season, as well as three goals from two Nedbank Cup outings. The country's big clubs could be interested in signing the Belgium-born star on a free transfer this winter. 'Two clubs have already contacted us from the PSL. South Africa is a nice country with a good league, and I would love to continue playing there at a new club,' Zajmovic told KickOff . 'I felt at home and will never shut a door for anything to do with South Africa, and my wife and kids know about it. It was an amazing experience being in South Africa. 'Football was good, and life was also the same, so there was a connection to being in a good mental space and playing football.' Not long ago, Yusuf Maart was allegedly on the brink of triggering a one-year contract extension option with Kaizer Chiefs. Now, the 29-year-old midfielder is on the verge of completing a move to Austrian side SV Ried. In three years at the club since moving from Sekhukhune, Maart has clocked up 95 appearances with seven goals and eight assists. SV Ried secured promotion to the Austrian Bundesliga for the 2025-2026 season. It's believed that Ried will part with €720k (R15 million) to land Maart.
