Chaos averted at Ahmedabad Rath Yatra after elephant runs amok
AHMEDABAD: Panic briefly erupted during the peaceful Rath Yatra in Ahmedabad near Khadia crossroads around 10:00 am on June 27 after a male elephant in the front of the procession ran amok.
The elephant, part of the ceremonial march, was reportedly startled by loud DJ music and excessive whistling, according to R.K. Sahu, officer of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's Zoo Department.
As the agitated elephant charged towards the crowd, two to three other elephants behind it started running, disrupting the disciplined formation.
The situation escalated as the male elephant sprinted towards a barricaded road leading to the Pol area. Despite warnings from four to five policemen, the elephant rammed through the barricades. Two to three people in the crowd were mildly injured.
Acting swiftly, the zoo team deployed two female elephants to calm the agitated male elephant.
The male elephant was brought under control and was tied safely near the Khadia junction, where zoo staff continue to monitor him.
"Only another elephant can control an elephant,' Sahu explained.
Following the incident, authorities have withdrawn all three elephants involved -- the agitated male and the two females -- from the Yatra.
With their removal, 14 out of the 17 elephants will now continue in the Rath Yatra.

Security up at 3 places in Ganjam after man crushed under chariot wheels
1 2 Berhampur: A day after a 32-year-old man was allegedly crushed to death under the wheels of a chariot at Sikula in Ganjam district, security has been tightened in places where Rath Yatra was held on Saturday. Chariots are pulled by devotees in Digapahandi, Dharakote and Surangi, a day after Puri. Hundreds of people from nearby villages pulled the chariot in Digapahandi and Dharakote, while several people from neighbouring Andhra Pradesh and tribals thronged Surangi in Patrapur block to participate in the festival. Siba Behera of Sikula died after the chariot allegedly ran over him on Friday. He was rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries late evening, police said. "We are investigating the incident," said Deepak Mishra, sub-divisional police officer (SDPO), Purushottampur. "Following the accident, we have asked police officers to keep strict vigil on chariot pulling in their areas," said SP (Berhampur) Saravana Vivek M. He said adequate forces were also deployed in Surangi and Digapahandi to ensure incident-free Rath Yatra. "Ever since the Jagannath Temple was built in Surangi, located near the Andhra Pradesh border, by the then king in the 18th century, the pulling of chariot was done a day after Puri Rath Yatra," said Anchal Pradhan, an elderly resident. Similar tradition continues in Dharakote and Digapahandi. "Bahuda Yatra will also be observed in these places a day after the traditional return car festival. It's our tradition since the temple was established," said Kuresh Patra, an advocate in Digapahandi. According to legends, everyone went to participate in the Rath Yatra in nearby places, including Jarada and Chikiti, leaving behind hardly any devotee to pull chariots in Digapahandi, Dharakote and Surangi. This propmpted the kings to postpone the pulling of chariots for a day. Rath Yatra was celebrated in Jarada on Friday, where Lord Jagannath is worshipped as Lord Parthasarathi.

3 women on way to Puri's Rath Yatra die in road accident
Three young women on their way to participate in Rath Yatra celebrations in Puri on Saturday died after they were run over by a bus on a highway connecting Bhubaneswar and the coastal pilgrim town, police said. Devotees participate in the Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath, in Puri.(ANI) The incident took place near Pipili over a bridge when the three women, who were travelling on a two-wheeler, were hit by a motorcycle following which they fell down on the road and came under the wheels of a government bus. While two died on the spot, the third woman succumbed to her injuries while being taken to Pipili community health centre, Pipili police station inspector-in-charge Soumendra S Tripathy said. The deceased women were identified as Rimijhimi Priyadarshini Sahu, Elina Das, and Kajal Das. While two were from Kendrapada district, the third one was a resident of the Old Town area of Bhubaneswar. The bodies were sent for post-mortem examination and a probe was launched. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed grief over the death of three women and extended condolences to the bereaved families of the deceased. He also announced a compensation of ₹ 4 lakh each for the next of kin of the deceased persons from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. Meanwhile, a youth, identified as Shibaram Behera, died after coming under the wheels of a chariot during Rath Yatra in Shikula village under the jurisdiction of Purushottampur police station in Ganjam district on Friday. In another incident during Rath Yatra celebrations in Bhadrak, a boy identified as Soumyaranjan Raut (14) died after a DJ vehicle used for the celebrations overturned at Anaharapur village in Dhamnagar block of the district on Friday night, police said. Soumyaranjan's father had died just eight months ago, Dhamnagar police station inspector-in-charge Gopal Krishna Jena said.

Burglars loot over Rs 10L from house in Rourkela
1 2 Rourkela: Thieves looted valuables worth over Rs 10 lakh from a house in Rourkela's Sector-8 on Friday evening when the family was away attending Rath Yatra. The house owner, Suresh Chandra Sahoo, reported that he and his family left their residence around 4 pm to participate in the celebrations and had locked the house before leaving. However, upon returning around 8 pm, they discovered the main door lock was broken and the house ransacked. Burglars had forced open an almirah and stolen gold and silver jewellery along with Rs 50,000 cash, which was saved for Sahoo's daughter's upcoming wedding. A complaint was filed at Sector-7 police station by 11.30 pm the same night. On Saturday, a scientific team conducted a detailed examination of the crime scene. Inspector in-charge of the Sector-7 police station R N Patra said, "We are trying to obtain CCTV footage from the locality to identify the culprits."
