Wallabies release Taniela Tupou to NSW Waratahs to take on British & Irish Lions

In a major development ahead of Australia's critical Test against Fiji this weekend, giant prop Taniela Tupou has been released from the Wallabies' training camp and sent back to the Waratahs for their tour match against the British and Irish Lions. Named as the starting tighthead prop in Australia's last match against Scotland on their 2024 end of season tour to Europe, Tupou has lost his spot in the squad for the Wallabies' only warm-up match for the Lions, against Fiji in Newcastle on Sunday. Struggling to reproduce his best form this year, Tupou will instead return to Sydney and rejoin the Waratahs ahead of their match against the Lions at Allianz Stadium on Saturday. Nicknamed 'the Tongan Thor', Tupou has made 58 appearances for the Wallabies since making his Test debut in 2017 but his prospects of adding to his caps during the upcoming three-Test series against the Lions now look to be in jeopardy. With Brumbies captain Allan Alaalatoa regarded as a near-certainty to be selected as the starting tighthead prop, Tupou was vying with Queensland's Zane Nonggorr and Tom Robertson, who can pack down on either side of the scrum, as the backup. Nonggorr was not released from the Wallabies' training camp for the Reds' match against the Lions in Brisbane on Wednesday. Robertson was let go so he could play for the Western Force against the Lions last weekend and had a storming game, despite his team's heavy 54-7 loss. One of six Force players who ran out against the Lions in Perth, Robertson returned to the Wallabies camp on Sunday and was given a clean bill of health after undergoing a fitness check. Robertson hasn't played a Test for Australia in three years but has put himself back in the picture for the series opener at Suncorp Stadium on July 19 and is desperate for a recall. 'Just to be in the squad is an honour, to try and push for a gig in that 23 would be unreal. I'd come close last year being in the squad for a bit and then had a few injuries and didn't make the 23.' Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt will announce his squad to face Fiji on Friday afternoon.

Lambourn completes English-Irish Derby double as Aidan O'Brien domination continues

Lambourn continued his equine family's extraordinary classic dynasty and provided training genius Aidan O'Brien with a record-extending 17th win in the Irish Derby at The Curragh on Sunday. O'Brien prepared a stable 1-2 with Lambourn, ridden by Ryan Moore, holding off Serious Contender to win by three-quarters of a length. The Irish Derby wasn't a repeat of Lambourn's virtuoso effort at Epsom when he led throughout to win the English Derby by more than four lengths but he was convincing nonetheless, responding when challenged by his stablemate before drawing clear to score by a comfortable margin. O'Brien's training record in the Irish Derby is simply superb while Moore became the first jockey to claim the classic three years in succession after he won on Auguste Rodin (2023) and Los Angeles (2024). 'Lambourn is just a very relaxed horse and was only doing the minimum with what he could get away with,'' Moore told Irish media. 'He stays well, is straight forward and is typical of his sire (Australia) and how Aidan trains them. He'll keep getting them to progress, to be consistent and he'll keep running big races all year.'' He's done it again! Epsom hero ð‹ð€ðŒððŽð'ð'ð wins the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby ðŸ'«ðŸ'« — Racing TV (@RacingTV) June 29, 2025 Lambourn became the 20th horse to complete the English-Irish Derby double but even more significantly he now joins his sire, Australia (2014) and grandsire Galileo (2001) as winners of both prestigious three-year-old races. 'Ryan was going to be happy if someone came with him as that keeps him focused,'' O'Brien said. 'He's a little bit laid back, a little bit lazy, and you could see up the straight he was waiting all the time but that's him.'' O'Brien has indicated Lambourn could take on older horses later in the season in either the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot later in July or the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp in October.

Exiled Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Darren Weir loses appeal against terms of disqualification

Exiled Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Darren Weir has unsuccessfully appealed the terms of a two-year disqualification for using an electric device on horses. Supreme Court Justice Finanzio delivered the judgement on Monday. Weir received a further two-year disqualification in July last year from the Victorian Racing Tribunal in relation to the historic animal cruelty charges. The sanction banished Weir from working with racehorses in any capacity until to September 2026. The September 2024 start date had taken into account Weir operated a successful pre-training business prior to the matter finally going through the VRT process. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. Therefore, the VRT had no choice but to start the new disqualification at the conclusion of the new Weir matter last year. Supreme Court Justice Finanzio could not be satisfied – on five grounds advanced by Weir – that the VRT erred on legal grounds in its decision. The Weir defence, heard by Justice Finanzio in April, revolved around 'double punishment', 'special circumstances' and 'unreasonable penalty'. Justice Finanzio endorsed the VRT process and decision across all three grounds for the Weir appeal. 'It's true while unlicensed he was not able to fully participate in the racing industry as a horse trainer but it remained the case he was entitled to do things and did that a disqualified person would be prohibited from doing, such it was open to the tribunal to treat that as not counting towards disqualification,' Justice Finanzio said. 'The tribunal had discretion to consider all of these matters in setting the period for disqualification and commencement of that period. '[The tribunal] Exercised that discretion in a way that is free from legal error.' Weir originally served a four-year disqualification, February 2019 to 2023, for the possession of electronic devices. Racing Victoria reopened its inquiry into the jigger scandal – mothballed pending any new information – when Victoria Police in late 2023 tendered video footage of Weir using the jiggers on three horses in 2018 as evidence in a related criminal proceeding before the Magistrates' Court. RV laid additional animal cruelty charges the following year, around the use of the jiggers.
