The soon-to-be-announced Sardar Patel Co-operative Dairy Federation (SPCDF) will bring together the relatively unorganised farmers from 20 states who currently pour nearly 100 lakh litres of milk per day (LLPD) through 20,000 'mandalis' and significantly supplement their incomes.
This fresh chapter in India's cooperative sector is being scripted from 'Milk City' Anand, also the birthplace of the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets the $11 billion homegrown brand Amul.
These farmers, who operate from a relatively informal setup at present, will get the benefits of various govt schemes.
Importantly, SPCDF is being formed in the year which not only marks the International Year of Cooperatives, the fourth year of the formation of the union cooperation ministry, Ministry of Cooperation, but also the 150th birth anniversary year of Sardar Patel, who sowed the seeds of Amul.
Gujarat is also the headquarters of the 1965-established National Dairy Development Board.
Sources said the governing structure of the new federation will comprise multiple stakeholders, including a GCMMF representative (20% equity), representatives of 10 milk unions of Gujarat (60% equity), and three board members representing farmers from outside Gujarat (20% equity).
Currently, Gujarat is home to 18 milk unions, which are members of GCMMF. Of these, 10 milk unions, including Banas Dairy, Sabar Dairy, Amul Dairy, and Mehsana's Dudhsagar Dairy, procure close to 100 LLPD milk from states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Bihar, among others.

Amul's member unions are fast expanding their national footprint to cover other states as well.
"SPCDF will be formed and governed under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies (MSCS) Act. The members of these societies formed under the Amul model will get all the benefits, including government schemes. This is essentially a move towards the goal of White Revolution 2.0 as envisioned by GOI to expand the dairy cooperatives network, making them efficient and effective," said an official close to the development.
"Effectively, this will expand the national cooperative network," the official said.
Currently, with a network of 36 lakh farmers across 18,600 villages of Gujarat and 18 member unions that procure 300 LLPD, GCMMF (Amul Fed) is the world's largest farmer-owned dairy cooperative. It is ranked 8th among the top 20 dairy companies in the world in terms of milk processing, as per the International Farm Comparison Network (IFCN).
Vadodara: Gujarat is all set to unite the country's 20 lakh dairy farmers with the formation of a new multi-state federation, which is taking shape nearly 50 years after cradling the 'White Revolution' that helped India turn from a milk-deficit to a milk-surplus nation.

No stop the clock, no pause: EU rejects calls from Alphabet, Meta and others to stall AI regulation
The European Union has firmly rejected mounting calls from major tech companies, including Alphabet, Meta to delay the implementation of its Artificial Intelligence Act. Many big tech companies and even the several European AI firms such as ASML and Mistral asked the commission to hold on the implementation, citing high compliance costs and complex regulatory requirements. However, the EU has now made it clear that the legal timeline for rolling out the AI Act will remain seen, indeed, a lot of reporting, a lot of letters and a lot of things being said on the AI Act. Let me be as clear as possible: there is no stop the clock. There is no grace period. There is no pause,' said EU Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier at a press conference via Reuters. US-based tech giants, including Google's parent Alphabet and Facebook owner Meta, have joined European firms in urging Brussels to consider a delay. But the Commission is resolute, and has even warned the companies that delays in implementation would compromise public trust and safety. Shah launches country's new multi-state cooperative federation
Vadodara/Anand: Union home minister and minister of cooperation Amit Shah on Sunday launched the Sardar Patel Cooperative Dairy Federation Limited (SPCDF), a new multi-state cooperative federation that will unite 20 lakh farmers from 20 states under a single unified umbrella. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now TOI reported on Sunday that a fresh chapter in India's cooperative sector was being scripted from 'milk city' Anand with the formation of SPCDF, a venture of the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets the $11 billion brand Amul. "The Sardar Patel Cooperative Dairy Federation will help farmers at a level that Amul does by engaging in fair practices of procuring milk and providing appropriate pricing," said Shah after unveiling the logo of Amul's new venture at a function at Amul Dairy. This event marked the completion of four years since the formation of the ministry of cooperation. Representatives of milk producers from 20 states, other than Gujarat, from where Amul procures milk, were present at the gathering. The new federation will have an initial corpus of Rs 200 crore. "Today, 36 lakh in Gujarat and 20 lakh more across India power Amul's operations. Thanks to their efforts, Amul's current turnover stands at Rs 80,000 crore. Next year, we will cross Rs 1 lakh crore — and the profit will go straight into the accounts of 56 lakh women," said Shah. He stressed that the cooperative model was not about enriching individuals but uplifting entire communities, with Amul standing as a model of inclusive economic success. The new cooperative federation will bring together dairy farmers from nearly 20,000 small and big unregistered milk cooperatives in 20 states on a single platform. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Of the 300 lakh litres of milk collected by GCMMF and its 18 member unions daily, 20% of the milk comes from 20 different states outside Gujarat. TOI reported that the new multi-state cooperative federation, which will be governed under the Multi-State Co-operative Societies Act, 2002, was being formed in the year that marks the International Year of Cooperatives as declared by the United Nations, and the fourth year of the formation of the ministry of cooperation. The year also marks 150th birth anniversary year of Sardar Patel, who sowed the seeds of Amul. The governing structure of the new federation will comprise multiple stakeholders, including a GCMMF representative (20% equity), representatives of 10 milk unions of Gujarat (60% equity), and three board members representing farmers from outside Gujarat (20% equity).

Union minister applauds Sarhad Dairy's salt cooperative
Vadodara: Union minister for cooperation on Sunday applauded Kutch-based Sarhad Dairy for registering the first cooperative for salt production. After successfully milking the ship of the desert, Sarhad Dairy is all set to exploit another of nature's treasures — the salt pans of the Rann of Kutch. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "Salt was the only segment left untouched by the cooperative movement. Today, that gap has been filled," Shah said while addressing a gathering a function in Anand that marked the 4th Foundation Day of the ministry of cooperation. During the function, Shah launched a series of projects. Lauding the registration of Gujarat's first cooperative society in salt production, Shah acknowledged the role played by Valamji Humbal, chairman of Sarhad Dairy and also vice chairman of the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) that markets products under the brand Amul. The salt cooperative is expected to unite small 'agariyas' — a community engaged in traditional salt farming practices — on a common platform. "The profit for producing salt will now go to the agariyas (salt pan workers)," Shah said, adding that it will help become a model for small salt producers. Talking to TOI, Humbal said that the salt co-operative has been registered under the name of Shri Kutch District Coastal Area Salt Producers and Sales Co-operative Society Limited under the Gujarat Co-operative Societies Act last month. "We plan to procure salt from the 'agariyas', process it, and sell it through GCMMF under the brand name Amul," Humbal told TOI, adding that to begin with, Rs 15 crore investment will be required for processing the salt procured from the 'agariyas'. "There are nearly 5,000 'agariyas' in Kutch alone who produce salt on land of ten or more acres. This initiative is expected to increase their income by three to fourfold," he said, adding that Kutch alone accounts for nearly 35% of India's total salt production. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "If one considers the total salt production in Gujarat, Kutch and neighbouring Surendranagar district contribute maximum to India's total salt production," he said.
