JONATHAN MILAN WON stage eight of the Tour de France in a mass bunch sprint on Saturday ahead of Wout van Aert and Kaden Groves.
On a day for pure sprinters and with no change at the top of the overall rankings, Lidl-Trek's Milan was the first Italian to win a stage on the Tour since Vincenzo Nibali in the Alps in 2019.

Pure sprinter Milan, 24, took over the top of the sprint points rankings and had been wearing the green tunic in place of Tadej Pogacar, who had earned the sprint and the overall leader's yellow jersey by winning stage seven.
Three-time former champion Pogacar retained the overall lead with Remco Evenepoel and Kevin Vauquelin rounding out the top three, with no change in the top ten as the peloton kept its powder dry.
Ben Healy, who won Thursday's sixth stage, finished towards the head of the peloton in 28th place.
With Eddie Dunbar forced to retire from the race with injury ahead of Saturday's start, the remaining 177 riders from the original 184 rolled through the Brittany countryside with the harvest ongoing a month early and colossal crowds on the roadside.
Under clear blue skies and 31 degrees Celsius (88 degrees Fahrenheit) heat there was little inspiration in the peloton to breakaway until late in the day.
French duo Mathieu Burgaudeau and Matteo Vercher attacked from 70km and the pair were only reeled in on the edge of finish town Laval after enthusiastic support on this Tour, which is based entirely on French soil but with no home winner yet.
Stage nine on Sunday heads south from Chinon to Chateauroux and is another flat affair with the focus on keeping hydrated in the heat and staying in the saddle.
But on France's national holiday on Monday there are eight classified climbs and many more besides in a stage loaded with opportunities.

AMERICAN CAMERON YOUNG seized his first US PGA Tour title on Sunday, firing a two-under par 68 in the final round of the Wyndham Championship for a six-stroke victory over Mac Meissner. He was also hoping the win might catch the eye of US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley with the biennial match play showdown with Europe coming up in September. 'Obviously that team is a goal of many of us,' the world number 44 said. Fellow American Meissner had five birdies in his four-under 66 to take second on 16-under 264. Sweden's Alex Noren and American Mark Hubbard shared third on 265 while US amateur Jackson Koivun shared fifth place with American Chris Kirk and England's Aaron Rai. Sunday's round marked the end of the PGA regular-season with the top 70 on the points list advancing to the playoffs which start next week at the St. Jude Championship. Superb instant switch of play led to the penalty and his willingness to forage on either flank was evidence that the Cameroonian will instantly upgrade United's forward threat. Would have loved to cap his display with a goal but understandably has debut run-out restricted to 45 minutes. Saying that, the way he played in and around Mbeumo and Cunha suggested United might not have to sign the Slovenian to have real attacking threat, with Fernandes showing creativity and enterprise throughout although spat with Ndiaye was utterly needless. Matheus Cunha 7 The Brazilian was asked to fill the central attacking role, rather than playing off the front man, although the trident gave him the opportunity to roam at times. Advertisement Prodded wide of the far post when he might have done better early on but the run in behind was excellent. The feeling remains he is a scorer of great goals more than a great goal scorer. Mason Mount (for Mainoo, 57) 8 Mount is desperate for an injury-free campaign and goals like he produced to put United back in front win this one will only help his cause. Terrific finish from 16 yards. Casemiro (for Ugarte, 72) 6 Advertisement Brazilian cannot lose the pace he never had. And surely he is smarter and more streetwise than Ugarte. 6 Rasmus Hojlund (for Cunha, 72) 6 Dane knows his United days may be numbered, even if that is against his will. Lara Gillespie finishes best of Irish at Tour de France Femmes
Lara Gillespie crossed the line 25 minutes behind Ferrand-Prevot yesterday to finish her Tour in 82nd in general classification. The Wicklow woman was best of a trio, who were the first Irish riders to compete in this iteration of France's Grand Tour. In the overall rankings, Mia Griffin finished 97th while Fiona Mangan took 118th. Ferrand-Prevot of team Visma-Lease a Bike held steady through the 124.1km ride from Praz-sur-Arly to Chatel, before launching a decisive attack in the last seven kilometres, and fell to the ground in tears after crossing the finish line. Vollering (FDJ-Suez) stayed in a group with Ferrand-Prevot for the majority of the ninth stage, but could not break away to make up her deficit of more than three minutes coming into the last day. The Dutch rider finished second in the race for the second year in a row, losing out on the yellow jersey by three minutes and 42 seconds. Defending champion Katarzyna Niewiadoma-Phinney (Canyon-SRAM) finished third overall. 'I'm so, so happy,' Ferrand-Prevot said. 'I was a bit scared with the pressure of this jersey... I had to stick to the front and just stay there.'
