JONATHAN MILAN WON stage eight of the Tour de France in a mass bunch sprint on Saturday ahead of Wout van Aert and Kaden Groves.
On a day for pure sprinters and with no change at the top of the overall rankings, Lidl-Trek's Milan was the first Italian to win a stage on the Tour since Vincenzo Nibali in the Alps in 2019.

Pure sprinter Milan, 24, took over the top of the sprint points rankings and had been wearing the green tunic in place of Tadej Pogacar, who had earned the sprint and the overall leader's yellow jersey by winning stage seven.
Three-time former champion Pogacar retained the overall lead with Remco Evenepoel and Kevin Vauquelin rounding out the top three, with no change in the top ten as the peloton kept its powder dry.
Ben Healy, who won Thursday's sixth stage, finished towards the head of the peloton in 28th place.
With Eddie Dunbar forced to retire from the race with injury ahead of Saturday's start, the remaining 177 riders from the original 184 rolled through the Brittany countryside with the harvest ongoing a month early and colossal crowds on the roadside.
Under clear blue skies and 31 degrees Celsius (88 degrees Fahrenheit) heat there was little inspiration in the peloton to breakaway until late in the day.
French duo Mathieu Burgaudeau and Matteo Vercher attacked from 70km and the pair were only reeled in on the edge of finish town Laval after enthusiastic support on this Tour, which is based entirely on French soil but with no home winner yet.
Stage nine on Sunday heads south from Chinon to Chateauroux and is another flat affair with the focus on keeping hydrated in the heat and staying in the saddle.
But on France's national holiday on Monday there are eight classified climbs and many more besides in a stage loaded with opportunities.

Young captures long-awaited first PGA Tour win at Wyndham Championship

AMERICAN CAMERON YOUNG seized his first US PGA Tour title on Sunday, firing a two-under par 68 in the final round of the Wyndham Championship for a six-stroke victory over Mac Meissner. It was an emotional win for Young, whose seven career runner-up finishes included the 2022 British Open at St. Andrews. He started the day with a five-stroke lead and after an opening bogey reeled off five straight birdies – a run that included a 26-foot bomb at the third hole. A pair of bogeys at 16 and 17 were immaterial and Young tapped in for a par at the 18th to cap a two-under par 68 that gave him a 22-under total of 258. Advertisement 'I've been waiting for it for awhile,' Young said. 'I never thought I'd really be that emotional about it, but it's the end of my fourth season and I've had my chances. Never quite like this — and I wasn't going to let it get away from me today.' Ireland's Seamus Power finished well down the leaderboard, tied 44th on an overall score of four under par. The win at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina, had a little extra resonance for Young, who played college golf at North Carolina's Wake Forest University. He was also hoping the win might catch the eye of US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley with the biennial match play showdown with Europe coming up in September. 'Obviously that team is a goal of many of us,' the world number 44 said. Fellow American Meissner had five birdies in his four-under 66 to take second on 16-under 264. Sweden's Alex Noren and American Mark Hubbard shared third on 265 while US amateur Jackson Koivun shared fifth place with American Chris Kirk and England's Aaron Rai. Sunday's round marked the end of the PGA regular-season with the top 70 on the points list advancing to the playoffs which start next week at the St. Jude Championship. Of the players hoping to play their way in this week, Kirk's finish was enough to move him up from 73rd in the standings to 61st. © AFP

Man Utd ratings: Mbeumo and Cunha have Red Devils fans excited, but Ugarte worryingly miles off the pace

Scroll down to see which United star proved that he is more streetwise than Ugarte GART TO BE BETTER Man Utd ratings: Mbeumo and Cunha have Red Devils fans excited, but Ugarte worryingly miles off the pace MANCHESTER UNITED drew 2-2 with Everton in Atlanta to conclude their pre-season tour of the United States. Ruben Amorim's side twice squandered leads on the night, but still did enough to win the Premier League Summer Series. Advertisement 7 Bruno Fernandes congratulates Mason Mount for his brilliant goal Credit: Getty Skipper Bruno Fernandes fired the Red Devils into a 19th minute lead from the penalty spot, after James Tarkowski was adjudged to have fouled Amad Diallo in the box. Iliman Ndiaye levelled for the Toffees before half-time, profiting on a poor mistake by Manuel Ugarte to score. A brilliant strike by Mason Mount might have won it for United, but for Ayden Heaven's freak own goal 15 minutes from time. Here is how SunSport's Martin Lipton rated each Red Devil in Atlanta. Advertisement READ MORE IN FOOTBALL MAN UTD 2 EVERTON 2 Amorim rues bizarre own goal but draw enough to win Summer Series Altay Bayindir - 5 Keeper's United future is decidedly uncertain and all the reasons for that were again in evidence. Slow reactions to Garner's free-kick should have been punished by O'Brien although he could do nothing about Ndiaye's strike. United need a reliable back-up to Andre Onana. It's hard to make a case for the Turk deserving that responsibility. Leny Yoro - 7 Third start in a row for the French, a clear sign that Amorim has him in mind to be the right-sided defensive starter. Advertisement BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK His callowness at times is on display, as you should expect. 7 Leny Yoro could have a big season for the Red Devils Credit: Getty There are occasional errors but the potential is unquestioned and one tackle on Beto after De Ligt was dumbfounded was crucial. He would surely welcome more help than Amad will ever give him, though. Advertisement SunSport's chief reporter Martin Lipton previews the season ahead for Man Utd... with confidence in the air Matthijs de Ligt - 5 Had the task of neutering Beto's threat but looked lumbering at times. Too often, when asked to defend, United stand off their men rather than forcing errors. The Dutchman is unlikely to ever change at this stage in his career and you can envisage him and Maguire being in and out of the team all season. Strikers with genuine pace might be licking their lips. Luke Shaw - 6 England veteran will probably be the man in possession on the left of the defensive trio for the start of the season and his emphatic backing for Amorim was a significant pointer of dressing room buy-in. But Shaw will know this was not one of his more persuasive performances as he seemed ill at ease whenever Everton opted to run at him. Doesn't help when the midfield is a leaky bathtub. Advertisement 7 Luke Shaw will be desperate for an injury-free campaign Credit: Getty Amad Diallo - 7 Clearly viewed as a wing-back this season and unleashed his rocket speed well to create Cunha's opening before winning the penalty converted by Fernandes. A real threat going forward yet his defensive weaknesses - clear once again in the 'Big Peach' - will surely be targeted by opponents as the season wears on. Can you risk him against the top Premier League sides? Manuel Ugarte - 4 The Uruguayan insists he is now ready for the Premier League. He will have to be better prepared than he was in Atlanta - as he was nowhere near good enough. Advertisement Everton appeared to feel they could force errors by putting him under pressure. They were not wrong, catching him in possession for Ndiaye's equaliser. This system will always see the most defensive midfielder exposed at times. 7 Manuel Ugarte endured an evening to forget Credit: Getty Kobbie Mainoo - 5 Amorim is adamant the England midfielder can make a genuine first team claim and that he is fitter and more mobile after the pre-season campaign. Yet it is hard to make the case that Mainoo has progressed over the past 12 months. Still not entirely sure what sort of player he is going to be or if he can fit this United shape.. Advertisement Diogo Dalot - 6 Portuguese defender, one of the six-man 'leadership group', started on the left - although that would make him Dorgu's likely understudy. Did make one really key intervention in front of his own goal as simple centres from Everton left United looking more than vulnerable and happier when moved to the right for the second half. Bryan Mbeumo - 7 First outing in a United short for the £71m recruit from Brentford, who drifted off the right hand side with purpose and penetration. Superb instant switch of play led to the penalty and his willingness to forage on either flank was evidence that the Cameroonian will instantly upgrade United's forward threat. Would have loved to cap his display with a goal but understandably has debut run-out restricted to 45 minutes. Advertisement 7 Bryan Mbeumo made his first outing in Man Utd colours Credit: AP Bruno Fernandes - 7 A third goal of the US Tour and second from the spot for the skipper, who is expected to reject the latest Saudi offer and remain at United, although if Sesko is bought he will have to play deeper than he did last night. Saying that, the way he played in and around Mbeumo and Cunha suggested United might not have to sign the Slovenian to have real attacking threat, with Fernandes showing creativity and enterprise throughout although spat with Ndiaye was utterly needless. Matheus Cunha 7 The Brazilian was asked to fill the central attacking role, rather than playing off the front man, although the trident gave him the opportunity to roam at times. Advertisement Prodded wide of the far post when he might have done better early on but the run in behind was excellent. The feeling remains he is a scorer of great goals more than a great goal scorer. United surely need someone who can do the ugly stuff in front of the net. 7 Matheus Cunha showed flashes of brilliance Credit: Getty Subs: Patrick Dorgu (for Mbeumo, 46) 7 Advertisement One of the stand-out successes of the US Tour and his entrance on the left saw Dalot switch flanks and Amad move further forward. Instantly improved the United left with the ball. Ayden Heaven (for Yoro, 57) 6 Teenager walked into a defence that was being worryingly stretched and did his best to bring more security. Own goal was not his fault at all. Harry Maguire (for Shaw, 57) 6 Advertisement A little bit of calmness is always welcome. Been there, got the tee-shirt. May not have the starting shirt, though. Mason Mount (for Mainoo, 57) 8 Mount is desperate for an injury-free campaign and goals like he produced to put United back in front win this one will only help his cause. Terrific finish from 16 yards. Casemiro (for Ugarte, 72) 6 Advertisement Brazilian cannot lose the pace he never had. And surely he is smarter and more streetwise than Ugarte. 6 Rasmus Hojlund (for Cunha, 72) 6 Dane knows his United days may be numbered, even if that is against his will. All he can do is try to prove Amorim he can do a job. Tyler Fredricson (for De Ligt, 88) 6 Advertisement A late run-out for the youngster. Something more for him to remember from his fortnight Stateside

Lara Gillespie finishes best of Irish at Tour de France Femmes

Lara Gillespie crossed the line 25 minutes behind Ferrand-Prevot yesterday to finish her Tour in 82nd in general classification. The Wicklow woman was best of a trio, who were the first Irish riders to compete in this iteration of France's Grand Tour. In the overall rankings, Mia Griffin finished 97th while Fiona Mangan took 118th. Ferrand-Prevot of team Visma-Lease a Bike held steady through the 124.1km ride from Praz-sur-Arly to Chatel, before launching a decisive attack in the last seven kilometres, and fell to the ground in tears after crossing the finish line. Vollering (FDJ-Suez) stayed in a group with Ferrand-Prevot for the majority of the ninth stage, but could not break away to make up her deficit of more than three minutes coming into the last day. The Dutch rider finished second in the race for the second year in a row, losing out on the yellow jersey by three minutes and 42 seconds. Defending champion Katarzyna Niewiadoma-Phinney (Canyon-SRAM) finished third overall. 'I'm so, so happy,' Ferrand-Prevot said. 'I was a bit scared with the pressure of this jersey... I had to stick to the front and just stay there.'
