'He deserves it' - Kenny heaps praise on Andrews, backs him to deal with Martin O'Neill criticism

STEPHEN KENNY HAS backed his former Ireland assistant Keith Andrews to excel as Brentford manager in the Premier League, and is confident Andrews will shrug off the intensity of the scrutiny coming his way, including from former Ireland boss Martin O'Neill. Andrews was confirmed as the new Brentford boss on Friday, meaning he steps into his first managerial role in the Premier League. Andrews had previously been on Thomas Frank's staff as the club's set-piece coach, and the club say he is the ideal candidate to build on his predecessor's outstanding work given he has the added benefit of knowing the squad and how the club operates. Andrews joined Brentford a year ago following a short stint on the staff at Sheffield United, whom he joined after Kenny's tenure with Ireland came to an end. Andrews served as Kenny's assistant with the Irish U21s from 2019, and joined him in stepping up to the senior team. Kenny maintains regular contact with Andrews, and had been in touch with him on Friday, though in relation to the passing of Ruaidhrí Higgins' mother. Higgins worked alongside Kenny and Andrews on the Irish senior staff. Advertisement 'I am in regular contact with Keith all the time, I am absolutely thrilled for him', said Kenny. 'It's a great opportunity for him, he deserves it. 'He has a superb level of detail. He is a very organised guy, super professional; a very analytical coach, and very modern, [with] innovative ideas, so good luck to him. It's great news.' Andrews has already drawn the ire of former Ireland boss Martin O'Neill, with O'Neill quick to point out that Andrews had been a vocal critic of his during the final days of his Ireland reign. Prior to going into coaching with Kenny, Andrews had a high-profile media career, combining regular appearances on Sky Sports and Virgin Media with his own show on Off the Ball. 'He has been their set-piece coach,' said O'Neill of Andrews. 'The irony is when I was manager of the Republic of Ireland he was a particularly vitriolic critic of mine at the time. He was really dead against me trying to use set pieces to try to win games. 'The irony is he becomes the set-piece coach. Really I say good luck to him. Brentford have decided, if it is the case, that he should get it. I hope he does get it because then he will realise what management is all about. It's not as easy to be sitting in a pundit's chair sitting to criticise someone who in all honesty had a much better career than he had. 'He was dealing at the bottom end of it when I was winning the European Cup. That doesn't mean you shouldn't be criticising. Everyone to their own. But it'll be a different ball game now.' O'Neill's old assistant, Roy Keane, described Andrews as a 'bullshitter' in a 2020 interview with showbiz journalist Barry Egan. Keane is now one of the highest-profile pundits in football, and will likely preside over some Brentford games for Sky Sports. Asked if he was confident that Andrews will deal with scrutiny and criticism like that of O'Neill's, Kenny replied, 'Keith is well able to handle all of that. It's all about the football really.' Kenny's more immediate concerns is the form of his St Patrick's Athletic side, who were held to a 0-0 draw away to bottom-of-the-league Cork City on Friday night, extending their winless run to four matches. Though he admitted his side miss the injured midfielder Romal Palmer, Kenny said Pat's will not rush into the transfer market, saying the club will not make any 'kneejerk decisions.'

Lions injury update issued by Andy Farrell after win over Western Force

Andy Farrell has issued an update on the condition of Welsh ace Tomos Williams after he hobbled off with an injury in their triumph against Western Force on Saturday. The Lions kick-started their tour by soundly defeating the Perth outfit, although the hosts put up a strong challenge in the opening half. Following the interval, the visitors stepped up their game and finished emphatically with a final score line of 7-54. Williams stood out with 50 minutes of quality play, bagging two tries for the touring side before injury struck following his second. Post a skilful combination with Mack Hansen, Williams crossed the line with flair but seemed to injure his left hamstring upon standing up, sparking worry within the Lions camp tonight, reports Wales Online. Sky Sports commentator and England legend Will Greenwood expressed concern during the incident, remarking: "I'm just hoping Tom Williams is OK. Rob Howley, 1997, right in amongst it, did his shoulder against the Sharks. "And a hamstring.... ooooh.... fingers crossed for him." Sam Warburton, former captain, advised caution, saying: "Firstly you take no chances, especially with fast and explosive players like Tomos, get him off straight away. "If he's going to be limping like that, you're looking like he's going to miss next week, the midweek game for certain." Subsequently, Williams was substituted with Alex Mitchell taking his place on the pitch. Farrell gave an update on the ex-Cardiff Rugby scrum-half's condition to Sky Sports after the match, noting: "It's a tight hamstring, so. "You don't know what these things are like. Hopefully it's a bit of cramp. We'll assess that, certainly in the morning." Discussing the match further, Farrell said: "Again, a new-ish team. Plenty of learning from last week and the same again from this week. "When we get out composure in the second half we were able be nice and calm." Admitting that the opposition had given them a stern challenge, Farrell conceded: "I mean, let's be honest, the Force took it to us. I thought they played a tough high-percentage game. They kept the ball really well and we kept them in good field position through our ill-discipline. "It was a real good test for us in that first half, glad how we composed ourselves at half-time and kept our composure throughout the second half. "There are nine new caps there. A couple of lads have not played they will get to play in the next couple of games. "It is nice to get tries on the board and a few good individual performances. That is all good for the future, and we have to keep pushing one another. "If you want to look what a Lion should do for his team-mates is when Mack Hansen went up and down the field and fought for his team-mates. "That's the sort of spirit we want."

Lions ratings v Western Force: Joe McCarthy and Josh van der Flier the best of the Irish

15 Elliot Daly Very comfortable under the high ball. Always composed and put in a number of important clearance kicks in the first half when the Lions were under pressure. Alert to Finn Russell's tap and go to follow in support and get the first of two tries. Rating: 9 14 Mack Hansen Grew into the game after a slow start but when he got going was instrumental in several of the game breaking tries including the one Ringrose got and also Williams second score. Should be pleased with a high-visibility game and impact. Rating: 8 13 Garry Ringrose Set an excellent tone at the very beginning of the match when the Force had territory and possession with a couple of crashing tackles. Then began to carry a bit more ball and ended up scoring an excellent try in the second half off a Hansen break. Rating: 8 12 Sione Tuipulotu The Scottish centre didn't manage the same high-profile number of line breaks as he did against Argentina. But a full commitment to defence especially when the Force had momentum in the first half. Gave away a few penalties in the first half. Rating: 7 READ MORE 11 James Lowe A quiet start but the Irish winger showed his full array of skills in defence, kicking long balls, hitting rucks with commitment and setting up tries for Williams and especially his out the back door flick to Sheehan for his try at the start of the game. Rating: 8 James Lowe of the British Lions runs across the field. Photograph: James Worsfold/Getty 10 Finn Russell A lovely player to watch. His crossfield kick to Sheehan was inch perfect and his decision to tap and go for Daly's try is what you would expect of a world-class outhalf. His delayed passing, which stands defenders very effective. Rating: 8 9 Tomos Williams Injured what looked like his hamstring scoring his second try after a super interchange with James Lowe. A high-energy contribution from the scrumhalf, who was also perfectly placed for Pollock's offload in the first half. Rating: 8 1 Pierre Schoeman Did most of his work when the Force were pushing for scores. Showed high energy and put his body on the line every wave of attack. Even took the ball in hand on the Lions try line. The exact king of aggression needed in an arm wrestle phase of the game. Rating: 8 2 Dan Sheehan What a start as captain. A crossfield kick which he taps back to James Lowe and then carries on in support to score a killer try. Also made some trademark carries during the match and filled the leadership role well with an all-round performance. Rating: 7 3 Tadhg Furlong Great to see him start and he showed his typical abrasive way of getting in the face of the opposition and working hard to stay relevant throughout his time on the pitch, especially in defensive positions. The scrum was not an issue either. Rating: 7 Hamish Stewart of the Force gets tackled by Tadhg Furlong of the Lions. Photograph: Paul Kane/Getty 4 Scott Cummings Did his best work in the first half-hour when the Force were pressing. Put his body on the line and knuckled down to the painful work of hitting getting up and hitting again. Didn't have the profile of his secondrow partner McCarthy. Rating: 6 5 Joe McCarthy Daly might have gotten man of the match on TV but McCarthy was given the award on the pitch with an outstanding contribution from beginning to end. Carried, tackled, mullocked in when he needed to in an excellent all-round contribution. A try too. Rating: 9 6 Tadhg Beirne Had some valuable early carries and especially when the Force were pressing after Ireland scored their first try made some essential tackles and defensive plays. Rating: 7 7 Josh van der Flier Probably another contender for Player of the Match. Van der Flier was showing when others were not in a difficult opening 30 minutes. He made mini breaks and twice held up players on the Lions line. He made 19 tackles and missed zero. Rating: 9 8 Henry Pollock All that was said about the young backrow's pace and maturity was on show. Okay, it was not an international opposition but his defensive work and awareness to offload for the Tomos Williams try will have greatly pleased Andy Farrell. Rating: 8 British and Irish Lions' player Henry Pollock. Photograph: Saeed Khan/AFP via Getty Replacements A try from Alex Mitchell at the end was just reward for a bench that kept pushing the match and the scoreboard forward against a tired opposition. A Huw Jones kick and chase, Ronan Kelleher, Ollie Chessum, Jack Conan and Andrew Porter also kept the tempo high. Rating: 8 Andy Farrell He turned around a team that were weak at the breakdown in the first half and were falling off some tackles and lacked intensity in the physical clashes. More than 50 points scored is good outcome against a non-international side. Rating: 8
