Here's How Much a House in the US Costs Compared to Mexico, Canada and China

While hopeful homeowners looking in Mexico will find average home prices substantially below the national average, those looking in Canada may have to pay more. China's home prices, on the other hand, are only slightly less per square meter than those in the United States.
Here's precisely how much a house costs in the U.S. compared to in Mexico, Canada and China.
According to Zillow, the average home value in the United States in 2025 is $367,969, a 0.8% increase compared to last year. The median list price is $409,933 as of May, and in April the median sale price was $357,600. Homes are selling relatively quickly in the country, going pending after around 17 days on the market. The tech real estate company notes that as of spring 2025, the U.S. is in a seller's market.
Homebuyers hoping to purchase property south of the border are in luck, considering houses are considerably more affordable in Mexico compared to the U.S. Mexico News Daily, the country's English-language newspaper, notes that the average home price in Mexico was 1.724 million pesos between January and June of 2024, or $92,500 when converted to American dollars. The price, however, did mark a 10% increase in cost compared to the previous year.
People looking to relocate to the United States' northern neighbor might be paying more for property compared to what they are used to. According to the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA), the average home price in Canada in 2025 is $691,299. Using today's exchange rate, this means that the average Canadian home price is around $504,787, considerably higher than the national average in the US. The value, however, does represent a 1.8% decrease from the average Canadian home price in 2024.
In China, home prices are typically viewed in terms of cost per square meter. According to Global Property Guide, home prices and rent are still declining throughout the region. As of March 2025, the price per square meter for newly constructed property in China was 16,740 RMB or $2,334. The significant difference lies in the average income-to-average house price ratio. In China, housing prices have long outpaced income, making the market nearly unaffordable. New policies have helped to cool the market, bringing down prices for new construction and second-hand homes.
Homebuyers looking to move to the U.S. or relocate to another country will also want to be aware of the potential role that tariffs may play in pricing. The National Association of Home Builders estimates that tariffs could affect the cost of a new home by $10,900. Tariffs increase the cost of construction supplies and can negatively impact the supply chain. While some tariffs have been paused, many remain in limbo, leaving construction companies to wonder whether prices for items like Canadian lumber will rise in the near future.
International housing markets have also been impacted by these tariffs, driving up the costs of new builds and renovations. More than anything, the tariffs seem to have caused uncertainty in the markets, which is always challenging and tends to deter buyers and sellers from making any significant moves.

The change is one of many at the Canadian lender as it undergoes a U.S. government-ordered anti-money laundering remediation program following a historic $3 billion penalty by U.S. regulators for lapses in its risk systems. Jensen joined TD in 2024 as the global head of sanctions as a part of the bank's move to hire experts with regulatory experience. He will retain global oversight of sanctions and report to Sanjuas, the memo said. Jensen spent over seven years at the U.S. Department of Treasury and also held senior roles at Citi and Scotiabank on global sanctions teams. The change is effective July 14, the memo said. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent reignited his feud with Elon Musk on Sunday during an interview with CNN, where the Cabinet secretary also quibbled with a host over whether the president had made the '90 deals in 90 days' he had promised the American public. Bessent's comments come as the administration is set to hit many U.S. trading partners this month with 'reciprocal' tariffs following the end of a 90-day pause. During that period, the White House discussed the types of trade agreements Donald Trump and his team were set to negotiate with China, the U.K., Canada, and dozens of other countries, which the president has accused of engaging in unfair trade practices. The majority of those deals did not materialize, except for a handful of exceptions. Many issues continue to divide U.S. and Chinese officials, but some export controls instituted by Beijing were lifted after an agreement was inked in late June. On Sunday, Bessent echoed a familiar line from the administration: the insistence that the tariffs Trump was imposing in the absence of formal agreements with foreign governments constituted the 'deals' promised by the White House. 'The president has a reputation, a self-described dealmaker, so why haven't we seen the kind of deals that he promised in the last 90 days?' asked CNN's Dana Bash. "Again, he didn't promise this,' countered Bessent. In reality, it was Trump's trade adviser, Peter Navarro, who set this goal during a Fox Business interview. 'And when we send out the 100 letters to these countries, that will set their tariff rate. So we're going to have 100 done in the next few days,' he continued. Bash responded: 'But that's not a deal. That's a threat.' 'No, that's the level,' said the Treasury secretary. 'That's the deal.' 'President Trump's going to be sending letters to some of our trading partners saying that if you don't move things along, then on August 1st, you will boomerang back to your April 2nd tariff level.' The White House initially announced a slate of 'Liberation Day' tariffs in early April, setting individualized tariff rates for dozens of U.S. trading partners, including some as high as 50 percent. Markets immediately engaged in a sell-off, prompting panic and a reversal by the president. But the end of Trump's 90-day pause is fast approaching, with the official deadline on Wednesday, July 9. So far, administration officials have not indicated that another pause is likely. Administration officials are currently negotiating with the EU, which is among the U.S. trading partners still seeking to avert a massive tariff hike. Before the president was re-elected, the average tariff on goods from the EU imported to the U.S. was just 2 percent. Trump has threatened to mark up tariffs as high as 50 percent. Holger Schmieding, chief economist at Germany's Berenberg bank, said the most likely outcome of the trade talks is that 'the US will agree to deals in which it takes back its worst threats of 'retaliatory' tariffs well beyond 10 percent'. Bessent's support of tariffs was one of several issues that led to his conflict with Elon Musk, the Tesla CEO and former DOGE overlord who joined the administration as a temporary appointee in January. The two argued frequently and even had one physical confrontation, according to news reports, and emerged as sharp personal rivals in addition to being political foes. On Sunday, the Treasury secretary made it clear that there was no love lost between the two men after Musk, who left the administration in May, publicly blew up at the president in a series of Twitter posts about a legislative package Trump had endorsed — the 'big, beautiful bill.' Musk was, and still is, a furious critic of the bill's deficit spending, which is projected to add trillions to the national debt over 10 years, and threatened last week to fund primary challenges against Republicans who voted for the legislation. His threats did not work, and it passed with only a few Republicans dissenting. 'The principles of DOGE were very popular. I think, if you looked at the polling, Elon was not,' Bessent told CNN. He went on to speculate that Tesla's board of directors would not react positively to the news that Musk was getting behind an effort to form a new political party, the 'America Party.' WASHINGTON — An pharmaceutical industry representative says Canada likely isn't the main target of U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to impose a 200 per cent tariff on pharmaceutical imports — but his plan could still put parts of the Canadian sector in peril. Canadian Generic Pharmaceutical Association president Jim Keon says there's a risk that Canada will get caught in the crossfire as Trump pushes to reduce Americans' reliance on drugs imported from places like China and India. On Tuesday, Trump floated the idea of massive pharmaceutical tariffs but said he would give drug makers up to a year and a half before introducing the duties. Keon says Canadian exports amount to less than five per cent of all generic medicines sold in the U.S. But without access to the American market, he says, it might not be practical for some companies in Canada to continue producing certain generic medicines for the domestic market. Keon says there is hope that the economic and security agreement being negotiated between Canada and the United States will ensure pharmaceuticals remain tariff-free.
