Osmar Olvera Ibarra of Mexico in action during the World Aquatics Championship Men's 3m Diving final held at the OCBC Aquatic Centre on August 1, 2025.
SINGAPORE – Waking up in the morning of Aug 1, Mexican diver Osmar Olvera Ibarra had only one thing in mind.
Having claimed three silver medals at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, the 21-year-old was determined to win the gold in his last event and end China's near two-decade stranglehold on the men's 3m springboard.
At the OCBC Aquatic Centre later in the evening, he accomplished what he had set out to do as he somersaulted, twisted and piked his way to history.
Garnering 529.55 points from six dives, he became the first Mexican winner of the event, thwarting China, represented by Cao Yuan and Wang Zongyuan, from making it 11 consecutive wins.
Cao, who was just 6.85 points behind Olvera, had also finished second in 2019 and 2022 while Wang, who had won in three consecutive editions before this meet, slipped to third with 515.55 points.
'Yeah, I believed it,' said Olvera when The Straits Times asked him shortly after the medal ceremony if he had believed that he would be the one to end China's streak, which stretched back to the 2007 edition.
'When I got up, I told myself that I will get a gold medal today. And that today, I will be a world champion and I got it, so I'm so happy.

'I don't know (why I felt this way) but yesterday when I went to sleep, I thought, it would be a really great day and in the morning, I was really sure today I would beat the Chinese divers. I know that they are the best, the best country in this sport, and I am always training, thinking that I want to beat them. And today I got it.
'It's a dream come true.'
Olvera had finished second behind Wang in the 2023 edition in Fukuoka and was third in Doha in 2024, behind Wang and Xie Siyi.
Finishing behind China had become an all-too-familiar feeling to him.
At the Paris Olympics last August, he also placed third behind Wang and Xie in the 3m springboard and partnered Juan Manuel Celaya Hernandez to a silver in the synchronized 3m springboard, as Wang and Long Daoyi claimed the gold.
Even in Singapore, he had to settle for silver in the men's 3m synchronised springboard, 1m springboard and mixed 3m and 10m team – all behind Chinese rivals.
The script looked set to stay that way on Aug 1. Going into the penultimate dive, it was the Chinese divers who had the upper hand with Cao and Wang racking up 344.80 points and 335.85 points respectively, while Olvera garnered 329.45.
But the Mexican saved his best dives – and the most difficult ones – for the last two rounds, as he overtook his rivals to become the first non-Chinese winner in the event since Canada's Alexandre Despatie in 2005.
Standing atop the podium with the Himno Nacional Mexicano blaring through the speakers was an emotional moment for him.
'Honestly, I was almost crying. I felt my country, I felt my family. I think they are really proud and I want to just enjoy the moment,' said Olvera.
Despite finishing second, Cao said he was very satisfied.
'It's also a breakthrough for me. I really wanted to help the Chinese team win the gold medal, but there may be some details that I didn't do well enough,' said the 30-year-old.
'For me, second place is actually very satisfying, but I hoped to help the Chinese team win the gold medal.'
During the preliminaries earlier in the day, Singapore's Avvir Tham and Max Lee finished 22nd and 44th respectively out of 65 and did not make it to the semi-finals. Only the top 18 progressed to the semi-finals before it was further whittled down to 12 for the final showdown.

New S'pore jobs portal launched for North West District residents looking for work near home

SINGAPORE – Job seekers in Singapore's northwest looking to work near their home can now find opportunities more easily, with the launch of a new online portal which curates jobs in the North West District. The district comprises Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC, Nee Soon GRC, Sembawang GRC and Bukit Panjang SMC. The Jobs Anywhere @ North West portal, by NTUC's Employment and Employability Institute (e2i) and FindSGJobs, currently has about 10,000 job vacancies. Jobs on offer include those at heartland merchants, such as hairdressers, and at hawker stalls, for stall assistants. The portal was launched on Aug 2 at the SkillsFuture Festival @ North West at Causeway Point in Woodlands. Mr Alex Yam, the mayor of North West District, said the jobs portal was developed in response to feedback from residents over the years. 'We understand that many residents face challenges finding flexible and part-time work opportunities near home, due to caregiving duties or other circumstances,' said Mr Yam, who is also an MP for Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC. He hopes the portal will help such residents find suitable jobs at heartland merchants. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. It has seven outlets, including one at Block 166 Woodlands Street 13. He typically advertises job vacancies by sticking job ads in his shop window. He said he has found it difficult to find Singaporeans to fill vacancies even though he offers flexible work arrangements. He decided to list the vacancy on the new jobs portal after being approached by Community Development Council staff. 'Hopefully more people will be coming in to interview for the job,' he said. He is hiring hair therapists, to help with tasks such as hair washing. The portal lists both full-time job opportunities and flexible 'microjobs' which typically refer to short-term or temporary work. A separate jobs portal, called the Heartland Job Portal, was launched in August 2024 for those looking to work near their home, though this portal lists job vacancies islandwide. Speaking at the launch of the portal, Mr Yam also acknowledged that the job landscape has become increasingly competitive, especially for the youth. 'Beyond securing employment, our youths continue to face significant stress in their search for fulfilling careers,' Mr Yam said. PHOTO: LIANHE ZAOBAO Beyond job matching, the platform offers career guidance and employment resources, Mr Yam said. This is where youths can find 'the right advice and right upskilling opportunities as well', he said. Ten training providers, including NTUC Learning Hub, James Cook Institute and Republic Polytechnic had booths at the festival, highlighting courses in the digital, green and care sectors. The care sector includes social services, early childhood, healthcare and community care. Ms Kameeni Mehta, 56, visited the event to learn more about artificial intelligence courses on offer. She left having signed up for two AI courses held over the weekends, so she will not have to take time off from her job at an insurance company. She said she was keen to learn a new skill, and picked AI to 'keep abreast with changes'. 'At a certain age, you just can't be complacent', said the Woodlands resident. 'AI is keeping everybody on our toes, and it's fascinating.' The SkillsFuture Festival @ North West is being held at Causeway Point on Aug 2 and 3.

Mandatory Credit: David Kirouac-Imagn Images Twice defending champion Jessica Pegula crashed out of the Canadian Open after losing to Anastasija Sevastova 3-6 6-4 6-1 in the third round on Friday, while six-times major winner Iga Swiatek marched on with a dominant 6-2 6-2 win over Eva Lys. The 35-year-old Sevastova, ranked 386 in the world, will next face four-times Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, who took out Latvian 22nd seed Jelena Ostapenko 6-2 6-4. "I don't know," Sevastova said after upsetting third seed Pegula. "Somehow, I was down 2-0 in the second set and started to play better and better. Third set, I played really good. Just trying to stay on the court as long as possible." Wimbledon runner-up Amanda Anisimova, seeded fifth in Montreal, carved out a comfortable win over Emma Raducanu, beating the 2021 U.S. Open champion 6-2 6-1. Anisimova's win over Raducanu is her first, having lost their previous two encounters. She will next face Ukrainian 10th seed Elina Svitolina. In the men's draw, American second seed Taylor Fritz made light work of local hope Gabriel Diallo, beating the 27th seed 6-4 6-2. Fritz, who is eyeing a third title of the season after triumphs in Eastbourne and Stuttgart, will next take on Czech 19th seed Jiri Lehecka. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. KTM plans new passenger rail service in Johor Bahru to manage higher footfall expected from RTS

Currently exclusive for freight service, Pasir Gudang KTM station is slated to run passenger service to Kempas Baru KTM station connecting to JB Sentral. PASIR GUDANG, Johor – Malaysia's state railway firm is set to start a new passenger service line that will help disperse the flood of commuter traffic expected from the soon-to-be-completed Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link. With the RTS scheduled to launch December 2026, Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTM) said it will expand its 40-km Kempas Baru to Pasir Gudang (KBPG) line that currently serves only freight operations to include passenger services by 2026. This will start with the establishment of two passenger stations. 'This will be the starting point for the Komuter Selatan (Southern Commuter train service), aligned with the completion of the RTS to help disperse passengers along the north-south travel corridor,' KTM chief executive officer Mohd Rani Hisham Samsudin told The Straits Times on July 22. Once up, the cross-border RTS project, which can ferry an expected peak capacity of up to 10,000 passengers per hour per direction between Singapore's Woodlands North MRT and Bukit Chagar station in Johor Bahru, will lead to a significant increase in footfall in the area. And while an earlier announcement said that a driverless tram-bus network, also known as an elevated autonomous rapid transit (ART) system, would be used to disperse commuter traffic in the Bukit Chagar area, there is no confirmation on its expected date. The expansion of the KBPG line to include passenger services will tackle that issue. The first phase will introduce commuter stops at Kempas Baru and Pasir Gudang along the single-track line that has for decades has been used to ship cargo – mostly cocoa and steel ingots – headed for Johor Port. The second phase will see more proposed passenger stations along the KBPG line. With the expansion of Johor Port, the Pasir Gudang City Council estimates some 300,000 people to be working in the area by 2030 from around 260,000 in 2020. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Singapore Opening of Woodlands Health has eased load on KTPH, sets standard for future hospitals: Ong Ye Kung Singapore New vehicular bridge connecting Punggol Central and Seletar Link to open on Aug 3 Business Property 'decoupling' illegal if done solely to avoid taxes: High Court Singapore HSA investigating teen who was observed to be allegedly vaping in MRT train Singapore Tengah facility with over 40 animal shelters, businesses hit by ticks Sport From remote islands to world stage, solo swimmers at World C'ships want to make their nations proud Asia 'Every day, we think about how to upgrade': China's factories see rise in robot adoption Singapore 60 years of building Singapore Other transport upgrades are also in the works to help deal with the potential increase in commuter traffic in Johor Bahru. In future, commuters alighting at the upcoming Bukit Chagar RTS station will be able to connect to Johor Bahru Sentral (JB Sentral) via a 400m covered walkway, where they can then board passenger trains at the KTM Kempas Baru Station, and travel to places like Kulai and Kluang in the southern state. And come December 2025, there will be another transport route linking up to JB Sentral. An Electric Train Service (ETS) is expected to begin operations there, completing the West Coast electrified rail route – operating at medium speeds around 140 km/h – from its northern terminus in Padang Besar to the southern terminus at JB Sentral, Transport Minister Anthony Loke told ST on July 29. This will complement the planned ART system by dispersing commuter traffic to the Iskandar Puteri, Tebrau and Skudai regions. The final route and stations for the ART will be known by August 2025, as announced by Johor transport executive councillor Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh. ART is an elevated, driverless tram-bus network which runs on tracks across bridges and viaducts. Meanwhile, Railway Assets Corporation, which is in charge of upgrading the KBPG line while KTM operates the train service, told ST that details and costs of the new passenger stations are still being finalised. KTM's Datuk Rani, 63, said that infrastructure upgrade is necessary before passengers train sets can be put into operation on the KBPG line. 'We need to build halts and raised platforms for passengers to board without making them climb the train. Secondly, the existing single track requires a proper passing loop and upgraded signalling systems to allow cargo and passenger trains to cross at the same time,' he said, adding that because the track is non-electrified, diesel trains will be deployed for the new passenger service. Halts are small train stops, which do not provide the full range of services offered at train stations. And a passing loop is a portion of single track line that briefly splits into two or more tracks to allow trains going in opposite directions to pass safely. KTM chief executive officer Mohd Rani Hisham Samsudin said that infrastructure upgrade is necessary before passengers train sets can be put into operation for the KBPG line. ST PHOTO: LU WEI HOONG Datuk Rani said the plan is for the diesel-powered passenger trains to operate at 20- to 30-minute intervals during the morning and afternoon peak hours. This service could begin operating by year-end once the tracks and stations are upgraded or completed. In the long run, he said the upcoming completion of the electrified double track along the Johor KTM stretch could pave the way for yet another passenger service, the electrified Komuter Selatan service, to operate between Paloh – a small town located about 130 km north from Johor Bahru – and JB Sentral, alongside the higher-speed ETS. From October 2024 to May 2025, the KBPG line underwent extensive upgrading works, including track replacement and a new signalling and safety system. This caused an extended closure and disruption of cargo transfers between Tanjung Pelepas Port in western Johor and Pasir Gudang Port in eastern Johor. However, senior KTM locomotive driver Mohd Kamal Asmawi said the temporary closure was worthwhile to optimise train speed. 'It has helped significantly reduce the risk of derailment. We can now operate trains at up to 80kmh, compared to just 30kmh before,' said Mr Kamal, who has been serving on the KBPG line since 2020.
