A Cape Town man continues to make court appearances on charges relating to driving under the influence of alcohol and negligent driving, after two runners were rammed in Bantry Bay.
The man made his latest appearance in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Friday, where the matter was postponed for further investigation.
The incident, which was filmed on March 30, was caught on CCTV footage along Victoria Road, Bantry Bay, and shows how the runners were hit, one of whom was flung into the air and landed in nearby bush and rock terrain along the coast.
Police initially confirmed the man's arrest and that he was detained and charged.
The DA's National Council of Provinces member on security and justice, Nicholas Gotsell, said he has since written to Police Commissioner Thembisile Patekile regarding cases of reckless and negligent driving.
'The DA notes the postponement in this case to August 12 for further investigation,' he said.
'We will continue to play an active oversight role and ensure that the police fulfil their constitutional duty to protect citizens – and that they do not neglect their responsibilities when others' lives are deliberately put at risk.
'This tragedy follows shortly after a Nigerian rapper crashed through a wall in Sea Point more than three months ago with no concrete actions taken by SAPS against the driver.
'Reckless drivers are increasingly using our roads as a racetrack.

'The DA has repeatedly written to the Western Cape Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Thembisile Patekile, about complaints of reckless driving and the failure to act against suspects – but no concrete steps have been taken. This lack of response raises serious questions about SAPS's bona fides and their commitment to public safety."
The Cape Argus approached the provincial SAPS office for Patekile's response and await feedback.
Earlier, Pedal Power Association CEO, Neil Robinson, said they called for justice to be served and were shocked at the number of lawless and poor driving of persons under the influence on the road.
The incident also happened just a month after dental surgeon from the Eastern Cape, Dr Ncumisa Mdlokolo, was tragically killed by a speeding Ferrari while walking with her sister in Buitengracht Street.
The driver, David Polet, is accused of being under the influence of drugs and alcohol and was arrested and charged and granted bail of R10 000 by the Cape Town Magistrate's Court. Get your news on the go, click here to join the Cape Argus News WhatsApp channel.

Mchunu calls for immediate action on Western Cape mass killings
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has urged police leadership to abandon routine strategies and deploy all available resources in response to the latest wave of mass killings in the Western Cape. This follows the deaths of 13 people in separate incidents over the past week. On Saturday, seven men were fatally shot in an ambush at a residence in Kanana, Gugulethu. Just days later, police discovered three more bodies at different locations in nearby Samora Machel. Earlier in the same week, three suspected hijackers were killed in a shootout in Nyanga during a foiled hijacking attempt. Mchunu described the situation in the Cape Flats as dire, warning, 'It is as if we have to choose between the people and the murderers; we actually do not have a choice.' In response, Mchunu confirmed that the Western Cape police have launched a chase for the Gugulethu shooting suspects. He said the unknown perpetrators must be tracked down as part of Operation Shanela 2, an intensified strategy rolled out last Friday. The operation focuses on murder, illegal firearms, drug trafficking, and gender-based violence. It draws on coordinated efforts between SAPS task teams, intelligence units, and various levels of government. 'The situation requires full implementation of what the ministry and management have discussed and concluded over a considerable period of time now,' said Mchunu. The minister did not mince words, calling parts of the Cape Flats 'the killing fields' of the province. He warned against normalising the violence: 'What the police ministry and police top management must refuse to do is to treat this as a normal trend and keep the normal methods of policing in place.' He called on the national police commissioner to mobilise every available resource: 'We urge the national commissioner and his team to activate and unleash all police resources to confront criminality and criminals.' Next Stay Close ✕ Detectives were responsible for 274 arrests, including 82 suspects for gender-based violence-related offences, one for murder, six for attempted murder, eight for armed robbery, 26 for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and 10 for rape. Van Dyk said a roadblock set up in Cullinan and Boschkop led to the detention of 22 undocumented foreign nationals, who are currently being processed by immigration authorities. During the operation, 906 individuals and 450 vehicles were searched, and 13 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. Targeted patrols were conducted at 18 identified crime hotspots, resulting in additional arrests and fines, including 20 people for public drinking and eight people for public intoxication. Traffic enforcement units issued 16 AARTO infringement notices, totaling R7,250 in fines. Liquor compliance inspections were conducted at 15 establishments, resulting in the closure of four for non-compliance. Authorities confiscated 724 145ml of alcohol and two music sound systems. Thine expressed gratitude to all participating stakeholders for their continued cooperation, and commitment to enhancing community safety. He also encouraged the public to report suspicious activities to SAPS Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or via the My SAPS App. Meanwhile, MMC for Community Safety, Hannes Coetzee, welcomed the handover of 11 new motorcycles to the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD), aimed at enhancing their response capacity. According to him, the handover would improve the effectiveness, mobility, and visibility of law enforcement across the metro. 'The motorcycles will be deployed as part of a broader effort to strengthen front-line safety operations, particularly in high-risk and high-traffic areas where rapid response and agile patrols are essential. Their introduction comes at a time when residents are calling for more responsive, more present and better equipped safety personnel,' he said. Coetzee said the new motorcycles will allow TMPD officers to better navigate congested urban areas, support targeted operations, and maintain a visible presence in high-need areas, including main roads and informal settlements, as well as during coordinated safety initiatives.
