More than 30 killed in sectarian clashes in Syria's Sweida, interior ministry says

More than 30 people were killed and 100 injured in armed clashes in Syria's predominantly Druze city of Sweida, the Syrian interior ministry said early on Monday, in the latest bout of sectarian clashes.
The violence erupted after a wave of kidnappings, including the abduction of a Druze merchant on Friday on the highway linking Damascus to Sweida, witnesses said.
This is the first time sectarian fighting has erupted inside the city of Sweida itself, the provincial capital of the mainly Druze province.
Last April saw clashes between Sunni fighters and armed Druze residents of Jaramana, southeast of Damascus, which later spread to another district near the provincial capital.
"This cycle of violence has exploded in a terrifying way, and if it doesn't end, we are heading toward a bloodbath," said Rayan Marouf, a Druze researcher based in Sweida who runs the Suwayda24 website.
The clashes involving Bedouin tribal fighters and Druze militias were centered in the Maqwas neighborhood east of Sweida, which is inhabited by Bedouin tribes, and was encircled by armed Druze groups and later seized.
The Syrian Ministry of Interior said that its forces will begin direct intervention in Sweida to resolve the conflict, calling on local parties in the Druze city to cooperate with the security forces.
Armed Bedouin tribesmen also launched attacks on Druze villages on the western and north outskirts of the city, residents said.
A medical source told Reuters that at least 15 bodies had been taken to the morgue at Sweida's state hospital. Around 50 people were injured, with some transported to Deraa city for medical care.

12 Druze civilians shot dead by Syria government forces

A monitoring group said Syrian government forces killed 12 Druze civilians when they stormed a family's guest house in Sweida city on Tuesday. "Members of the defense and interior ministries carried out field executions of 12 citizens after storming the Radwan family guest house in the city of Sweida," said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor with sources on the ground. An unverified video clip circulating on social media showed at least 10 people in civilian clothes covered in blood inside a guest house. Pictures of Druze dignitaries lay scattered around the room, alongside damaged furniture.

Pregnant journalist Petra Abou Haidar attacked in road rage assault

In a shocking act of violence, LBCI journalist Petra Abou Haidar, who is eight months pregnant, was physically assaulted by a man and a woman riding a motorcycle with no license plate in Jounieh. The assailants accused her of cutting them off in traffic before blocking her car and launching an attack. The woman reportedly got off the motorcycle and began beating and biting Abou Haidar in an incident that has raised serious questions about public safety and unprovoked aggression on the roads. The assault, described as both inhumane and alarming, underscores what many say is a rising trend of lawlessness and unchecked hostility. Abou Haidar documented the incident in a series of videos clearly showing the faces of the two attackers and has filed an official complaint with the Jounieh police station. LBCI is calling on anyone who can identify the individuals involved to come forward and contact its social media accounts to assist security forces in the investigation.

IOF admit one soldier dead in Khan Younis

The Israeli occupation forces (IOF) have acknowledged the death of a new soldier in the ongoing battles in Khan Younis in the Gaza Strip, Israeli media confirmed on Wednesday. A reserve sergeant major was killed in clashes with the Palestinian Resistance in southern Gaza, Israeli website Ynet confirmed. Abraham Azoulay was shot dead during an ambush in Khan Younis after Hamas fighters emerged from underground and attempted to capture him. The IOF's admission came after the al-Qassam Brigades announced that its fighters carried out a raid at dawn against a gathering of Israeli occupation soldiers and military vehicles in the Abasan al-Kabira area, east of Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip. In a statement, the Brigades said that its fighters targeted a Merkava tank and an armored personnel carrier with Yassin-105 anti-armor shells. Two Israeli military excavators were also hit during the same operation using similar munitions. The group added that during the operation, its fighters attempted to capture an Israeli soldier. However, due to battlefield conditions, they were unable to do so and instead neutralized the soldier and seized his weapon. Following the confrontation, al-Qassam fighters observed an Israeli helicopter landing at the site of the operation to carry out an evacuation, underscoring the intensity of the battle in the targeted area. The al-Qassam Brigades also noted that five days earlier, they had targeted a Merkava tank in the same region with a powerful improvised explosive device (IED), highlighting the sustained resistance activity in eastern Khan Younis as Israeli occupation forces continue their ground operations in Gaza.
