Childhood fan Mbeumo joins Man Utd re-build
Mbeumo, 25, will reportedly cost the 20-time Premier League champions an initial £65 million ($87 million) having scored 20 goals in 38 league games last season for the Bees. Tottenham, now managed by former Brentford boss Thomas Frank, were also chasing the France-born attacker before United's improved offer sealed the move.
United's third bid, worth an initial £65m with £6m in add-ons, was accepted last week. 'As soon as I knew there was a chance to join Manchester United, I had to take the opportunity to sign for the club of my dreams,' Mbeumo said in a United statement. 'The team whose shirt I wore growing up.'
'This is a massive club, with an incredible stadium and amazing fans, we are all really determined to challenge for the biggest trophies,' he added. United coach Ruben Amorim has signed two other players during this summer in an attempt to avoid a repeat of last season's catastrophic display.
They lost to Tottenham in the Europa League final and a 15th-place finish in the top flight was their lowest since 1973-74. Wolves forward Matheus Cunha and teenage Paraguayan defender Diego Leon have also moved to Old Trafford.
'Primary target'
Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee struggled as Amorim's main strikers last term. 'My mentality is to always be better than I was yesterday,' Mbeumo said. 'I know that I have the spirit and character to reach another level here learning from Ruben Amorim and playing alongside world-class players.'
Mbeumo blossomed in six years at Brentford, scoring 70 goals and providing 51 assists in 242 appearances in all competitions following his move from French club Troyes in 2019. 'There is always a right time for a player to move on and, for Bryan, that time is now,' Brentford director of football Phil Giles said.
'He has the opportunity to go to one of the biggest clubs in the world, and we are very happy for him,' he added. Mbeumo helped the Bees win promotion to the Premier League in 2021 and was instrumental in their impressive 10th-place finish in 2024-25.
'We are delighted to have secured another one of our primary targets ahead of the pre-season tour,' the Red Devils' director of football Jason Wilcox said. 'The experience in the US will be the perfect opportunity for Bryan to work with Ruben and his new team-mates as we prepare for an exciting season ahead,' he added.
In terms of United outgoings, Marcus Rashford is set to leave his boyhood club for Barcelona and an announcement could come on Tuesday. Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia continue looking for new clubs and are not expected to fly to the US as part of the tour squad.
United start their pre-season tour of the United States on Sunday by facing West Ham before their opening game of the new Premier League season against Arsenal on August 17. — AFP

LISBON: Dynamic striker Viktor Gyokeres' arrival at Arsenal could be the perfect fix for their attacking needs ahead of the new Premier League campaign as the Gunners bid to end their lengthy title drought. The Swedish center-forward signed from Sporting Lisbon on Saturday in a deal worth up to 76 million euros ($89 million) as Arsenal seek the key to unlock a first league crown since 2004. While Mikel Arteta's side are defensively durable, at times they lacked offensive thrust as they came second in the top flight behind Liverpool and reached the Champions League semi-finals. The Spanish coach often deployed midfielders Kai Havertz and Mikel Merino up front last season, particularly after Gabriel Jesus was sidelined through injury in January. The imposing Gyokeres, strong, fast and a constant surging threat, is a new type of tool for a side eager for more cutting edge going forward. After a move to Brighton fell flat, failing to make a Premier League appearance, Gyokeres shone at Coventry City in the English Championship. He earned a move to Sporting in 2023, and his game has continued to grow rapidly. 'I'm definitely there... at the same table (as the world's top strikers),' the forward told L'Equipe earlier this month, comparing himself to Harry Kane, Erling Haaland and Robert Lewandowski. The 27-year-old striker netted 97 goals in 102 matches across all competitions for the Portuguese giants, helping Sporting win the league title in both of his seasons at the club. Gyokeres rarely lets defenders rest, with his movement a problem for opponents, who get dragged around and struggle to keep up as he breaks in behind. The forward celebrates his goals by making a mask with his hands, which he has indicated is in reference to brutish Batman villain Bane, representing his physical prowess and lethal finishing. Gyokeres' presence should lighten the load on winger Bukayo Saka, who is often targeted as Arsenal's man to stop, and could give the England international more space to operate in. Given his superb form over the past two seasons it feels the right moment for the striker to make the jump to one of Europe's top sides. 'The best players' Sporting president Frederico Varandas threatened the forward with a fine as he refused to turn up at pre-season training, trying to force through his transfer. Eventually Gyokeres got what he wanted and at long last Arsenal have as well, after failing with moves for Aston Villa's Ollie Watkins in January and Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig earlier this summer, among other reported operations. 'In the Premier League we've gone a step backwards... it's clear that we haven't done as good as last season, that's obvious,' said Arteta in May, making his case for signing attacking stars. 'I want the best team, the best players. If we have three goalscorers over 25 (goals each), bring them in, and we're going to be a much better team. 'I think if you score over 90 goals, you have a high, high probability of winning the Premier League.' Gyokeres hit 54 last season in 52 matches for Sporting, finishing only behind Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe in the European Golden Shoe standings, and beating Liverpool's Mohamed Salah. The striker netted more top-flight goals than Mbappe but because of the weighting-based system depending on the strength of their respective leagues, he finished behind the Frenchman. 'The Portuguese league is a very good league, with a lot of technical players—it may not be as physical as in England, but the level is really good,' Gyokeres said, confident he will adapt to the Premier League. A hat-trick against Manchester City in the Champions League last season as Sporting thrashed Pep Guardiola's side 4-1 in November suggests he might be right. Two of those goals were penalties, however, and he scored 19 spot-kicks in total across all competitions, with some questioning if he really does belong in the top bracket of attackers. Pogacar leads peloton into Paris for Tour de France climax
PARIS: Tadej Pogacar leads the Tour de France into Paris later Sunday on the cusp of a fourth title after a dominant 21-day romp over the peaks and plains of France. The final day normally culminates with a parade into the French capital and a sprint on the famed Champs-Elysees avenue. But for the first time organizers are sending the race through the narrow cobbled lanes of the north Parisian neighbourhood of Montmartre, in a nod to the route used to much fanfare for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The detour could well provoke a long-range attack and champion-in-waiting Pogacar said he may target the stage win from there. 'We'll see what happens and how the legs are,' the Slovenian said after Saturday's stage. The 21st and final stage, a 132km ride from Mantes-la-Ville to the Champs-Elysees, features three ascents of Montmartre where droves of fans are expected to crown a vintage edition of the sport's most prestigious cycling stage race. Barring a final-day fall, the top three places on this Tour were fixed on two ascents to Alpine ski resorts, where Pogacar shook off any final resistance from Danish rival Jonas Vingegaard, who put up a brave challenge before fading to second for Team Visma. But this Tour has not just been about the rivalry between Pogacar, a Tour winner in 2020, 2021 and 2024, and Vingegaard, victor in 2022 and 2023. Emerging stars A barnstorming first week of racing unveiled a raft of emerging stars. Florian Lipowitz, 24, sits in third place to put Germany back on the map as Red Bull's arrival in the world of professional cycling immediately impacted the Tour. Lipowitz was given a run for his money by 22-year-old Scot Oscar Onley, whose steady ride propelled him to fourth overall. Five of his Picnic-PostNL teammates hail from the same youth team. Ireland's Ben Healy bagged a stage win and a two-day stint in the yellow jersey. Adding a heroic near miss on Mont Ventoux was enough to earn Healy the publicly voted-for prize for combativity, awarded just ahead of the start Sunday. The return of Dave Brailsford from Manchester United to Ineos Grenadiers was overshadowed by Italian powerhouse Filippo Ganna falling early on stage one and being withdrawn due to concussion. Having previously masterminded seven Tour de France wins, Brailsford dug in and the team's Dutch climber Thymen Arensman pulled off heists in the Pyrenees and the Alps with well-executed attacks. Another Dutch rider, Mathieu van der Poel, lit up the first week, sealing a stage two win and twice wearing the yellow jersey. France's sole and unexpected stage win came on the lunar-like summit of Mont Ventoux thanks to Valentin Paret-Peintre. The 2025 Tour, however, will be remembered mainly for Pogacar's all-round dominance. He won stages on rolling runs in the north and west at Rouen and the Mur de Bretagne in the first week, then on the mountain slopes of the Pyrenees on the Hautacam and Peyragudes in week two. As the Tour entered its end game Pogacar unexpectedly switched his attacking default setting to nurse his lead through the Alps. Ahmad Hayel joins Al-Arabi camp in Abu Dhabi
ABU DHABI, July 26: Al-Arabi has officially kicked off its overseas training camp in Abu Dhabi, UAE, ahead of a crucial phase in its season preparations. The camp, which runs until August 8, includes two friendly fixtures—against Hatta on July 31 and Baniyas in early August. Jordanian assistant coach Ahmad Hayel and Ugandan defender Kenneth Semakula joined the squad earlier this week to reinforce the technical and player lineup.
