No longer easy to get strong majority, Johari reminds Umno

SEREMBAN : Umno has been urged to prepare leaders who are principled, trustworthy, and capable of uniting all communities, in line with the expectations of today's voters.
Umno vice-president Johari Ghani reminded party members that it was not easy to secure a majority in today's challenging political landscape. The party needed a new strategy for the next general election, one that focussed on the aspirations of the younger generation. Umno could not rely on nostalgia to secure votes, he said.
Johari said voters, especially the younger generation, have high expectations of leaders who are not only knowledgeable but also open, transparent, and possess integrity and credibility.
'They (voters) want leaders who are knowledgeable, both on local and international matters, and who are committed to issues like the environment and conservation,' he said at the Seremban Umno delegates meeting today, Bernama reported.
'This is the reality. Young voters have very high expectations. They want principled leaders – leaders who can be trusted, and who can strengthen ties among all communities,' he was quoted as saying.
Johari said Umno must be more dynamic and open to remain relevant.
'Umno needs to accept the reality that securing a strong majority isn't an easy task, as voters now have diverse ideologies,' he said.
'Don't assume that we will always be the only ones in power. There are times when we must share power. We need to accept the fact that the world today is changing, finding a political party with a strong majority is no longer easy, as each has a different ideology,' he said.

PM Anwar: Reform WTO to protect fair policy space for developing nations

RIO DE JANEIRO, July 7 — Malaysia fully supports a comprehensive reform of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. According to him, there is a need to breathe new life into the organisation so it can better navigate issues such as artificial intelligence, digital trade, and climate policy in the future. '(This should be done) without restricting the fair policy space of developing countries,' he said after meeting with WTO Director-General Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala here today (Monday in Malaysia). The meeting in Brazil's second-largest city was held to discuss the organisation's role in addressing current global trade challenges. 'I reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to multilateralism and the need for the WTO to remain inclusive, effective, and responsive,' he added. Anwar and Okonjo-Iweala are in Rio de Janeiro to attend the 17th Brics Leaders' Summit. Okonjo-Iweala is a Nigerian economist who has served as the WTO Director-General since March 2021. She is the first woman and first African to lead the WTO as Director-General. Anwar arrived here on Saturday at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to attend the summit, which is being held from July 6–7. — Bernama

Citing VK Lingam and 1988 crisis, PKR lawmakers want RCI to end rumours of interference in Malaysia's top courts

PUCHONG, July 7 — Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and eight other PKR MPs today called for a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) to investigate allegations of improper judicial appointments and interference in the judiciary. The MPs said the inquiry was crucial to address the allegations and prevent a repeat of the damage inflicted on public trust from the 2007 VK Lingam tape scandal and the 1988 constitutional crisis. Rafizi said an RCI is the best way to quell public speculation that was arising reasonably from circumstances such as the vacancies and successions within the judiciary. 'We can't stop the public from speculating. Speculation is not good; that's why the best way to do this is to have an RCI. Let the learned members of the RCI go through this; they will be able to ascertain what has transpired and present it to the public,' he said at a press conference at the Subang parliamentary service centre here. 'If that is done, it will affirm the government's commitment to defend judicial independence, and it will nip the problem and speculation in the bud.' Rafizi emphasised, however, that the call for an RCI was not an act against the current administration, adding that all nine PKR MPs continue to support the federal government and the ruling coalition.
