The TotalEnergies CAF Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations, Egypt 2025, kicked off in style on Sunday evening with a vibrant opening ceremony at Cairo International Stadium, setting the stage for what promises to be an exhilarating tournament.
The event, which started at 17:45 GMT, captured the spirit of African unity and youth energy.
The opening ceremony put together by the United Sports Company in collaboration with the Local Organising Committee, combined cultural showcases with modern artistry to celebrate the start of Africa's premier youth football competition.
Egyptian music star Ramy Sabry headlined the festivities, electrifying the crowd with a series of his biggest hits, creating an atmosphere of celebration and excitement among the thousands of fans in attendance.
The opening ceremony's impressive production and colourful performances offered a glimpse into the cultural richness of Egypt and Africa as a whole, setting a positive tone for the rest of the tournament.
The tournament runs from 27 April to 18 May 2025, featuring 13 teams from across the continent battling not only for the continental title but also for four coveted places at the FIFA U-20 World Cup later this year in Chile.
Group A action was played immediately after the ceremony, with hosts Egypt edging South Africa 1-0 in Cairo after Sierra Leone and Zambia played out a goalless draw earlier in the day in Ismailia.
Egypt, three-time champions at this level, are aiming for a fifth title to add to their successes in 1981, 1991, 2003, and 2013.
They share the five-team Group A with South Africa, Zambia, Sierra Leone, and Tanzania.
The top two teams in each group, along with the two best third-placed teams, will advance to the quarter-finals.
With national pride and World Cup qualification on the line, the TotalEnergies CAF U-20 AFCON 2025 is off to a bright and festive start.

Zamalek sign Swedish-Palestinian winger Adam Kaied on free transfer - Egyptian Football

Zamalek have signed Swedish-Palestinian winger Adam Kaied on a free transfer, the Egyptian club announced on Sunday. The 23-year-old joins on a three-year deal after the expiration of his contract with Dutch side NAC Breda, where he spent the past two-and-a-half seasons. Kaied made 17 appearances in all competitions last season for Breda, scoring once. Born in Sweden to Palestinian parents, he represented Sweden at youth level before switching allegiance to Palestine, for whom he has earned two senior caps. He becomes Zamalek's fifth signing of the summer following the arrivals of goalkeeper El-Mahdi Soliman, Angolan winger Chico Banza, and Pharco FC attacking duo Amr Nasser and Ahmed Sherif. The club have also extended the contract of veteran playmaker Abdallah El-Saed for two more seasons and are close to signing NBE midfielder Ahmed Rabie. Zamalek are rebuilding their squad after a disappointing campaign last season, which saw them finish third in the Egyptian Premier League and exit the CAF Confederation Cup in the quarter-finals. The new league season is scheduled to begin in August. (For more sports news and updates, follow Ahram Online Sports on Twitter at @AO_Sports and on Facebook at AhramOnlineSports.) NBE Club sign winger Shalaby from Zamalek in swap deal - Egyptian Football

Egyptian Premier League side NBE Club have signed winger Mostafa Shalaby from Zamalek in a swap deal that will see midfielder Ahmed Rabie move in the opposite direction. As part of the agreement, NBE also acquired right back Sayed Abdallah from Zamalek, while the Cairo giants will gain the services of Rabie ahead of the new season. The 30-year-old joined Zamalek from Enppi in October 2022 but he failed to impress during his three seasons at the club. He made 102 appearances, scoring 15 goals and providing 15 assists. During his spell at Zamalek, Shalaby helped the team win the CAF Confederation Cup, the CAF Super Cup, and the Egyptian Cup. This strategic initiative underscores CAF's commitment to enhancing leadership excellence and strengthening governance structures across African football. Aligned with the vision of CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe to position African Football as globally competitive and self-sustaining, the Executive Programme is tailored to equip senior football executives with advanced competencies in governance, administration, commercial strategy, and operational leadership. Following the successful completion of the inaugural edition, the second intake comprises a diverse and high-calibre group of professionals from CAF Member Associations across the continent. These participants represent a new generation of football leaders committed to driving institutional progress and innovation within their respective organisations. Participants will convene in Cairo, the headquarters of CAF, and later attend one of Africa's leading football events in a major host city to be announced in due course. The Progamme will conclude with a graduation ceremony in Cape Town, South Africa in the new year. These immersive experiences will be reinforced by expert-led modules focusing on strategic leadership, financial management, stakeholder engagement, and organisational development.
