ALIMCO integrates AI in next-gen prosthetics for inclusive innovation

From AI-powered systems to smart mobility aids, the Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO) is gearing up to introduce a new lineup of assistive technologies designed for persons with disabilities, featuring integrated artificial intelligence components.
The innovations were detailed during ALIMCO's recently held Annual General Meeting for FY 2024-25, where officials unveiled a series of products under development and nearing rollout.
A public sector undertaking under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, ALIMCO is set to introduce these AI-enabled products as part of a broader vision for inclusive and affordable innovation, senior officials said.
"True empowerment begins with access to technology that enhances independence and dignity. At ALIMCO, we are leveraging AI and indigenous innovation to build a future where no one is left behind," said Praveen Kumar, CMD, ALIMCO.
For FY 2025-?26, the corporation is preparing to launch another wave of assistive technologies, including a universal socket, upgraded motorised tricycles and wheelchairs -- currently in different stages of design, prototyping, or user trials.
Other upcoming devices include a commode wheelchair and an assistive cane for visually impaired persons.
ALIMCO is placing a strong emphasis on in-house research, user-centric design, and cost-effectiveness, aligning with national initiatives like 'Make in India' and 'Atmanirbhar Bharat', a senior official said.
The organisation is also expanding outreach by collaborating with state governments, NGOs, district administrations and the Red Cross Society to improve access to assistive devices for persons with disabilities (PwDs) and senior citizens.
"Under the Pradhan Mantri Divyasha Kendra (PMDK) initiative, we are enhancing last-mile delivery of aids in remote and aspirational districts. ALIMCO also partners with special schools across the country to ensure that children in need receive the appropriate assistive devices," the official told PTI.
To strengthen coordination and outreach, ALIMCO is also engaging with state project directors of the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) through dedicated conferences.
"These conferences aim to raise awareness and enhance synergy with state education departments for identifying and supporting more Children with Special Needs (CWSN) under the Centre's ADIP scheme," the official added.
With its latest product range, ALIMCO officials said they aim to scale both impact and reach, especially in rural areas where access to quality rehabilitation support remains a challenge.

The India-UK free trade agreement has provisions to protect the country's 14 production-linked incentive (PLI) sectors such as electronics, mobile manufacturing, white goods, drugs intermediaries, auto components, specialty steel, solar modules and drones for five to 10 years, commerce ministry officials said on Sunday. The India-UK comprehensive economic and trade agreement (CETA), signed on Thursday, provides for gradual tariff reduction on India's strategically important products, particularly those where domestic capacity is being built under flagship initiatives such as the Make in India scheme and PLI. Thus, they have protection at least between 5 and 10 years, said the officials cited above, requesting anonymity. Also read: Pastries, pet food, alcohol: What will get cheaper after India-UK trade deal 'Strategically important products, particularly those where domestic capacity is being built under flagship initiatives like PLI, concessions are made under CETA over periods ranging from five to ten years with gradual tariff reduction,' an official aware of the matter said. According to CETA's schedules of the tariff commitments, while pushbutton type of telephone sets from the UK will see tariff elimination from the date of entry into force (EIF) of the agreement, basic cell phones (HS code 85171400) will have duty protection for 10 years and smartphones (HS code 85171300) are in the exclusion list. Both basic cell phones and smartphones currently attract 20% customs duty in India. A 10-year protection means the duty shall be removed in 10 equal annual instalments beginning on the date of entry into force of CETA. Also read: India to have freer access to UK market as landmark deal signed Mobile phone manufacturing, a key component of the large-scale electronics manufacturing (LSEM) under the production linked incentive (PLI) scheme. Launched in April 2020, LSEM has already transformed India from a net importer of smart phones to a net exporter. The scheme helped India to become the second largest mobile manufacturer in the world with ₹5.45 lakh crore worth of production in 2024-25, including ₹2 lakh crore of exports in that financial year. Similarly, a 10-year protection is available for domestic manufacturers of drones (remote-controlled unmanned aircraft), which is the fourteenth sector under the PLI scheme. The other sectors under are critical key starting materials and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), medical devices, automobiles and auto components, pharmaceuticals, specialty steel, telecom and networking products, electronic and technology products, white goods, food products, manmade fibre segments and technical textiles, high efficiency solar PV modules, and advanced chemistry cell batteries. Experts said CETA would not have much impact on PLI sectors as manufacturing is a costly preposition in the UK and it cannot compete with India's cheap labour. 'India's PLI sectors have not made any remarkable achievements so far, other than the smartphone manufacturing,' said Ajay Srivastava, founder of Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI). India has, however, protected most of its key sectors, he added. Even as India commits to reduce or eliminate import tariffs on nearly 90% of goods originating from the UK under CETA, it 'strategically' excluded sensitive items such as tea, coffee, and gold. India currently imposes steep duties of 110% on coffee, tea, and sausages. Srivastava is a former Indian Trade Service officer and was part of the country's negotiating teams for various FTAs. 'These items are excluded from any tariff relief under CETA, reflecting India's effort to protect domestic farmers and food processors. While CETA opens the door for UK exporters across a range of sectors, India has carefully tailored its concessions to balance foreign access with domestic sensitivities,' he said. Government data show that India has safeguarded its sensitive sectors such as dairy, cereals, millets, pulses, vegetables, jewellery, lab-grown diamonds, certain essential oils, critical energy fuels, marine vessels, worn clothing, critical polymers and optical fibres. According to Srivastava, India's concessions on the automobile sector will set a precedent for other future FTAs. 'For the first time in any FTA, India will lower duties on UK-built passenger vehicles under a Tariff Rate Quota (TRQ). Duties on luxury and mid-size cars will drop from 100%+ to 10% over 15 years, within quotas rising from 10,000 to 19,000 units by year five. This opens a path for UK brands like Jaguar and Land Rover, and sets a precedent for future auto concessions,' he said. India will cut duties on alcoholic drinks from the UK—including whisky, vodka, and gin—only for bottles priced above $6 per 750ml. For qualifying imports, tariffs will fall from 110% to 75% in year one, and to 40% by year 10, he said. Some lines drop from 150% to 75%. Over 30 products are covered, giving premium UK spirits better access while shielding low-cost segments, he added.

he first public railway line utilising steam locomotives for passenger transport was established in England. George Stephenson's rail system, the Stockton and Darlington Railway, opened on September 27, 1825, in England. Rail technology was quickly adopted in India, with its first journey commencing in 1853 and covering 34 km. Indian Railways has since leaped forward in its operations with enhanced safety systems, high-capacity loco systems (12,000 HP), passenger-friendly coaches, and various types of wagons, most of which are indigenously developed. Railways currently employ 1.3 million people. At Independence, Railways had 57,000 route km (RKM) of track, with less than 1% electrified and 50% broad gauge and, while the rest were meter and narrow gauge. Currently, Railways possess 69,000 RKM, with 90% of its routes electrified. At the time of Independence, India did not manufacture locomotives domestically at a commercial scale. All locomotives in use were imported, primarily from Britain, Germany, and the US. India soon began locomotive manufacturing in 1950 itself. Now, railways operate, India's first semi-high-speed, fully indigenous electric train the Vande Bharat Express, designed and manufactured under the Make in India initiative. Many freight terminals have been developed as Gati Shakti Terminals. Railways have also made significant digital advancements, such as online passenger and freight systems, with various operational activities, especially real-time train tracking, being digitalised. Railways have world-class PSUs, manufacturing units, including RVNL, IRCON, IRCTC, ICF, and RITES. We now have world-class railway stations developed through PPP, for example, at Rani Kamalapati Railway Station in Madhya Pradesh and Gandhinagar, with amenities comparable to modern airports. Additionally, 1,300 stations are in the pipeline for redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Schemes, with mixed public-private funding. The revenue expenditure in Railways during the financial year 2023-24 was ₹2,52,833 crore against revenue receipt of 2,56,093 crore. The revenue surplus was ₹3,260 crore. The capital expenditure from the budget in 2023-24 was ₹2,62,216 crore. Railways should able to function as business entity. Success examples from certain countries like China, France, and the US reveal that separation of operations & fixed assets, expanding marketing, improving governance, citizen-centric approach as well as autonomy in decision making, will lead to better profits. It was created in 1995 through the merger of Burlington Northern and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. In 2010, BNSF became a wholly owned subsidiary of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway implemented a series of reforms that significantly enhanced its operational efficiency, service quality, and profitability . BNSF prioritised network rationalisation , removing redundant routes and focusing on high-demand corridors. Net income increased from $ 1.7 billion to $ 6 billion within five years. The Chinese government began separating government functions from enterprise management, leading to the establishment of China Railway Corporation in 2013 (later restructured as China State Railway Group in 2019). This allowed railways to operate more like commercial entities with a focus on profitability and efficiency. A major reform thrust was the massive expansion of high-speed rail (HSR), starting in the mid-2000s, which turned China into the global leader in HSR technology and network size (HSR 45,000 RKM. Addition, government introduced market-oriented mechanisms, allowing private and local capital into railway construction and services. Railway investment was re-structured to rely more on bond financing and public-private partnerships (PPPs) rather than only State funding. In addition, incentives to performing railway zones caused increased outputs. Telescoping pricing of Railways from July 1 states that no increase up to 500 km in ordinary class; increase of ₹5 for distance 501 to 1500 km and ₹10 for distances up to 2,500 km and ₹15 for distance slab 2,501 to 3,000 km. This hike may add additional revenue less than 2 %. There is scope to increase fare much higher percentage due to healthier economy and poverty reduction. Railways should be able to compete with air transport, especially by introducing high speed trains quickly which would reduce congestion at airports and also attract throughputs to railways in turn additional revenues. Railways should also generate additional income from their manufacturing units, non-fare revenues, unbundling non-core activities, real estate development, and network expansion, implementation of Rail Development Authority will certainly attract private players. The establishment of an integrated transport department to help prioritise projects and distribution of throughput effectivity, establishing a unified transport regulator, will help the transport sector grow faster and healthier and may attract private parties in operation, investment and maintenance. Ballooning capital expenditure to Railways from the budget is a matter of concern. The above cited reforms may help Railways to generate additional revenues and shall become self-reliant. Noting that today, more than 3,000 textile start-ups are active in India, Modi said many start-ups have lent global height to India's handloom identity. Buy and sell only those things that are made in India, in which an Indian has shed sweat. This should be our resolve," he asserted. In these 11 years, 'Swachh Bharat Mission' has become a mass movement, and people consider it their duty, and this is real public participation, Modi said. "The Swachh Survey conducted every year, has lifted this feeling further. This year, more than 4500 cities and towns of the country joined it. More than 15 crore people participated in it. This is not an ordinary number. This is the voice of Swachh Bharat," he said.
