The President Is Dead (In Helldivers 2)

Yahoo30-05-2025
'The President of Super Earth has been killed in action by the Illuminate during the fall of Prosperity City.' That was the message that greeted Helldivers 2 players when they logged on last night in one last bid to repel their invading squid-like foes. Some truthers think the hit was inside job. When the dust settled Friday morning, the battle to save Super Earth was over and players had succeeded in winning the extraction shooter's biggest showdown since it launched. Pus they got a new battle station to celebrate.
'The devastation wrought upon our home is immense,' read the latest in-game dispatch from Arrowhead Game Studios. 'Only two Mega Cities remain standing: Prosperity City and Equality-on-Sea. The remainder have been vacated by the enemy, having suffered catastrophic damage at their hands.' New Major Orders are still pending, but in the meantime players get to vote on where to move the new DSS battle station that aided in the fight, and that provides extra military bonuses to Helldivers fighting on whatever planet it orbits.
For anyone who missed the last two weeks, a brief series of entries on the Galactic Map recaps the events from the Illuminate's arrival and torching of Mars and other planets, all the way through players' epic last stand to protect Equality-on-Sea (Helldivers' version of Shanghai). A lot of creative military tactics were improvised and deployed to take down the massive invading Leviathan ships, and a wave of negative Steam reviews, purportedly from Chinese players angry, due to a potential mistranslation, about why they couldn't seem to fully liberate Equality-on-Sea, appears to have subsided.

What happens next is anyone's guess. Arrowhead Game Studios might take some time before kicking off whatever it has planned to let players catch their breath. Maybe the development team is lining up a revenge campaign, or maybe there's still another shoe to drop and Super Earth isn't quite in the clear after all. A new president? In this economy? Maybe they're just an Illuminate plant after all, ready to control Super Earth from within. The beauty of Helldivers 2's fascist space satire is that nothing is ever quite out of the question.
May kicked off one of Helldivers 2's biggest balance patches and content updates in some time, including a new Warbond battle pass with additional melee weapons and the ability to level up and customize most of the shooter's guns. I wouldn't bet on any other big updates anytime soon. That said, Summer Game Fest is just around the corner and Arrowhead used host Geoff Keighley's last big gaming showcase to announce the addition of the Illuminate to the fray. Who knows what's in store for the second half of Helldivers 2's second year?

You Don't Need to Drop $80 on a New Game. Here Are the Best Games for $50 or Less Right Now

There's been a lot of talk about how much the cost of games could increase in 2026. It's already been confirmed that some AAA games, like The Outer Worlds 2, will be priced at $80 when they come out. It's ironic that a game that satirizes corporate greed will be carrying a higher price like that, but here we are. However, another trend has quietly emerged over the past few months as well: Many great AA games are being released for $50 or less. A lot of these titles are currently on sale, too, so you can pick them up even cheaper right now. As an avid gamer, I've found a lot of more affordable titles that are well worth your consideration. One is even the top contender for Game of the Year. And who knows, maybe one of them will end up being your new favorite game. The best games for $50 or less right now Claire Obscur: Expedition 33 The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon FBC Firebreak Elden Ring Nightreign Helldivers 2 Alan Wake II The best games for $50 or less Questline Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon $45 at PlayStation $45 at Steam $45 at Xbox A newcomer to "scrolls-like" games, Tainted Grail has all the right ingredients. It takes place in Arthurian legend. The fabled King Arthur has already died, long ago, but not before he established a new capital for humankind on the island of Avalon. However, a Wyrdness has since settled on the island, and it's your job to sort it out, with some unexpected help. Though it's a little rough around the edges -- my time with the game has included a number of bugs and crashes -- it has really solid bones, and the team behind it is actively working on patching things. The magic system, itemization and world building are all good. You can really tell Questline has a love for games like Oblivion. I happily paid the $45 to support the studio, and I'm excited to see how it continues to iterate and improve on the game as development continues. Genre: RPG, first- or third-person Number of players: Single player Platform: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC $45 at PlayStation $45 at Steam $45 at Xbox Hangar 13 Mafia: The Old Country $50 at Target The next instalment in Hangar 13's Mafia series isn't out yet, but it's looking promising. This time, Hangar 13 is turning back the clock to 1900s Sicily, where you'll be put in the shoes of Enzo Favara as he rises through the ranks of the Torrisi crime family. I've played all the other Mafia games, and whereas Mafia 3 stumbled with its open-world format, Mafia: The Old Country brings the series back to its more linear, story-driven roots. Pick this one up when it hits stores on Aug. 8, 2025, for $50. Genre: Third-person action Number of players: Single player Platform: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC $50 at Target Arrowhead Game Studios Helldivers 2 $32 at PlayStation $40 at Steam I can't write a list of great inexpensive games without including Helldivers 2. It's one of my favorites, especially to play with friends. When you're seconds away from extracting off an alien planet, surrounded on all sides by thousands of bugs, with fire, lasers and missiles raining from the sky and your friends in your ear cheering you on or yelling at you for inadvertently blowing them to bits, it's a rush, to say the least. As a Helldiver, it's your job to spread "managed democracy" across the universe, ending the threat posed by giant bugs, the voteless zombie Illuminate, and cold, terminator-like robots. You're just fodder in Super Earth's endless wars, but until your inevitable demise, you'll have all its weaponry -- including massive, orbital lasers; automated turrets; and destructive napalm strikes -- at your disposal to obliterate its enemies. Genre: Third-person shooter Number of players: 1-4 players Platform: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S (starting 8/26/25), PC $32 at PlayStation $40 at Steam

Labor's debt bombshell after court ruling

Debt recovery for overpaid welfare checks is set to resume following a landmark Federal Court ruling, but Labor is reportedly considering a bombshell debt forgiveness measure that would stop the collection. The Federal Court handed down its decision on Tuesday that the method the government had been using since 2020 to calculate and collect debt was valid. The Department of Social Services (DSS) had paused debt repatriation for social security employment checks received before 2020 as it awaited the key court judgment, but the department secretary Michael Lye said the court decision affirmed his 'legal position' and assessment activities would resume. 'Now there is certainty to the legal position, assessment activities will recommence in line with the court's decision and my obligations as secretary,' Mr Lye said. The department could now reassess the debt of up to 160,000 people as far back as 1979, reportedly worth $1.1bn. But the Australian Financial Review reported that government officials were aware that Social Services Minister Tanya Plibersek was considering options on the overpayments, going as far as to forgive the debts. Greens questioning in senate estimates earlier this year revealed that Services Australia was chasing billions of dollars in decades-old debt. Data showed that up to $4.9bn in unpaid debts were being pursued from more than 829,000 customers. Ms Plibersek did not comment beyond a joint statement released with Katy Gallagher on Tuesday. 'The Albanese Labor government acknowledges the decision of the Full Court of the Federal Court in Matthew Chaplin v Secretary, Department of Social Services,' the statement read. 'Income apportionment is a historical practice which ran from the early 1990s to 2020. It is not used today. It has never been used by the Albanese Labor government. 'Income apportionment was a method used by Centrelink to calculate debts in circumstances where they did not have detailed information about days and hours worked. 'This methodology reduced unreasonable reporting burdens and paperwork on welfare recipients and was a genuine misinterpretation of the law. 'The Chaplin decision has reconfirmed that the process of income apportionment was not lawful. It also confirmed that the process used to calculate debt since 2020 is valid. 'The government will now evaluate its impact and develop a suitable response.' Greens social services spokeswoman Penny Allman-Payne criticised the government for 'aggressively targeting income support recipients with cruel and ridiculous debt notices based on dubious data matching methods'. 'Income support payments are already below the poverty line, meaning thousands of income support recipients are making tough choices between skipping meals or paying the rent,' she said. 'The last thing they need is the government hounding them to disprove a dodgy debt notice, sometimes from decades ago. 'The Greens will be urging Labor to act to protect welfare recipients and finally put the Robodebt era behind us.'

Gamescom Opening Night Live 2025: How to watch and what to expect

I'm still reeling from all the Summer Game Fest 2025 announcements, but Geoff Keighly is already gearing up to take to the stage again to kick off Gamescom with his annual Opening Night Live kickoff presentation. This is the last major gaming event for upcoming video games to show themselves off to a wide audience before The Game Awards at the end of the year, and we already know some big titles are scheduled to appear. To give you a refresher, Gamecom Opening Night Live 2024 was where we first saw Borderlands 4, plus deeper looks at Civilization 7 and Monster Hunter Wilds. Will this year be able to stack up? We can't say for sure yet, but I can tell you how to watch it and what games you can expect to see. When is Gamescom Opening Night Live 2025? CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS 7 worldwide reveal at Opening Night Live kicks off @gamescom in a massive way. Tuesday, August 19. Streaming live everywhere at 2p ET / 11a PT / 8p CEST. — Geoff Keighley (@geoffkeighley) July 14, 2025 The entire Gamescom event runs from August 20 through August 24, but Opening Night Live will get the party started early on Tuesday, August 18, at 2 pm. ET. Recommended Videos There's been no mention of how long Gamescom Opening Night Live 2025 will be, but last year's event was around 2 hours long, plus some pre and post-show coverage, so I suspect this year will end up being a similar length. How to watch Gamescom Opening Night Live 2025 It is to be expected now that all the big gaming events will be streamed live across all major platforms, and Opening Night Live 2025 is no different. You can watch along with the rest of the world who isn't able to be there in person on the official YouTube, Twitch, X, Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok accounts. Make sure you also keep Digital Trends open as we cover all the announcements as they happen so you don't miss any important details. Every confirmed announcement for Gamescom Opening Night Live 2025 The big showpiece kicking off Opening Night Live 2025 is confirmed to be Black Ops 7, but that will only be the beginning. That's the only confirmed title, but here are some other games I think are likely to appear: 2XKO Borderlands 4 Resident Evil Requiem Silent Hill f Directive 8020 Ninja Gaiden 4 Hollow Knight: Silksong (please!)
