Xander Bogaerts, Padres pour it on early to beat Nationals

Reutersa day ago
July 20 - Xander Bogaerts had a first-inning grand slam among his two hits, Nick Pivetta pitched six strong innings and the San Diego Padres beat the host Washington Nationals 8-1 on Sunday, taking the rubber game of the series.
Elias Diaz had a home run and a single, and Jake Cronenworth added two doubles for the Padres, who have won five of seven.
Pivetta (10-2) allowed a run on three hits, struck out five and walked one. In his last five starts, Pivetta is 3-0 with a 0.57 ERA, 36 strikeouts and six walks.
Riley Adams homered for the Washington run and Luis Garcia Jr. and Paul DeJong each had two hits. The Nationals have lost six of seven.
Washington All-Star MacKenzie Gore (4-9) endured his worst outing of the season, allowing eight runs on eight hits -- two of them home runs -- in 2 1/3 innings.
The Padres jumped on Gore in the first. Fernando Tatis Jr. led off with a walk, Luis Arraez singled and Manny Machado walked to load the bases. Bogaerts then turned on a first-pitch fastball, homering to left to make it 4-0. Before the inning was over, Jose Iglesias and Cronenworth hit back-to-back doubles for another run.
With two outs in the second, Machado walked, Bogaerts singled and Gavin Sheets lined a single to center off shortstop CJ Abrams' glove to make it 6-0.
Cronenworth doubled leading off the third and Bryce Johnson bunted him to third. Diaz homered to left on a 2-0 pitch to increase the lead to 8-0 and end Gore's afternoon.
Adams homered to center off Pivetta with two outs in the fifth to make it 8-1.
Washington's James Wood lined a single to right-center in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap a career-worst 0-for-20 skid.
The Nationals loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh, but Bryan Hoeing retired Abrams on a fly to left.

Venus Williams makes a winning return to action at the age of 45

Venus Williams made a winning return to action after 16 months out with doubles victory alongside Hailey Baptiste in Washington on Monday. The 45-year-old seven-time Grand Slam tournament winner accepted a wildcard to compete in the Mubadala Citi DC Open this week. She and fellow American Baptiste proved too strong for Eugenie Bouchard and Clervie Ngounoue as they triumphed 6-3 6-1 in a last-16 encounter that lasted 72 minutes. Her comeback will continue as she takes on another American in Peyton Stearns in the first round of the singles. It is Williams' first appearances in a WTA Tour event since March 2024. 'It was great to come out here and see the energy,' Williams said on Sky Sports after the match. 'As we were walking out to the court, we knew this was going to be a match. 'Our opponents actually played very well. It wasn't easy for us but we brought it together quickly as a team. It was inspiring to be out here. I love this game and still hitting it big.' Williams joked she wished she could have partnered with Baptiste, the 23-year-old world number 50, years earlier rather than playing with her sister Serena. She said: 'I think from the first point, I could see that we were going to be a good team. We just should have started playing earlier, years ago, right? I think Serena was just in the way!' Britain's Emma Raducanu scored an eye-catching win on her doubles debut alongside former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina. Competing together for the first time, the duo fought back from an early deficit to beat fourth seeds Tereza Mihalikova and Britain's Olivia Nicholls 2-6 7-6 (4) 11-9 in a decisive tie-break set. It was a notable win for Raducanu and Rybakina against opponents who triumphed at the Berlin Open last month and also reached the final at Indian Wells earlier this year. British number one Katie Boulter fell at the first hurdle in the singles as she went out 3-6 4-6 to Greece's Maria Sakkari. Boulter lost her opening service game in each set and was never able to regain the initiative. Earlier, former men's singles champion Dan Evans enjoyed a triumphant return to the tournament as he came from behind to beat Zizou Bergs. Evans, the veteran former British number one, triumphed in 2023 but opted not to defend his title last year as he focused on the Olympics. The 35-year-old was awarded a wildcard to participate this time and took advantage as he overcame a slow start to beat the Belgian Bergs, the world number 52, 3-6 6-4 6-3. Bergs looked to have resisted the fightback when he edged back ahead with a break in the final set but Evans powered back to secure victory by winning four successive games. 'I didn't just want to take the wildcard and lose,' Evans said on Sky Sports. 'I felt I needed to pay them back a bit and try to 'defend' my title, because I couldn't last year. 'It was great, really enjoyed it, but it was rally difficult. There wasn't much rhythm. He played very well and I was lucky to come through that.' Phils' Cristopher Sanchez rides hot streak into start vs. Red Sox

July 22 - Cristopher Sanchez has emerged as a model of consistency for the Philadelphia Phillies. After a sizzling finish to the first half of the season, Sanchez takes the mound Tuesday when the Phillies host the Boston Red Sox. Sanchez was not chosen for the National League All-Star team despite allowing two runs or fewer in each of his past nine starts. His steadiness in July has been particularly notable, as he has allowed three runs in 21 1/3 innings this month, good for a 1.27 ERA. "I'm just so proud of (Sanchez) from where he started and where he's at right now," manager Rob Thomson said after the lefty gave up one run in 7 1/3 innings in a 2-1 win over the San Diego Padres in his most recent start on July 13. "Not just stuff, but command, poise and composure." The Phillies showed plenty of poise in the 10th inning on Monday, as they plated the winning run without putting a ball in play. Two walks, a wild pitch and a catcher's-interference call proved to be the decisive formula for Philadelphia against erratic Red Sox reliever Jordan Hicks. Phillies reliever Max Lazar kept his composure in the top of the 10th inning, striking out a pair of Boston hitters (and getting the other to ground out) to keep the game tied, setting up the winning rally. "He's been great. I trust him," Thomson said of Lazar, who emerged with his first major league win. "He's been really good. And he's got ice in his veins, too. He's really cool out there." Philadelphia starter Zack Wheeler allowed two runs and struck out 10 over six innings. Bryce Harper doubled twice and scored a run for the Phillies, who had lost six of their previous nine games. "You've got to win that game. You've got to win the series," Wheeler said. "And hopefully Sanchy can get us that win (Tuesday) to win the series." Jarren Duran homered for the Red Sox to open the game against Wheeler, but the visitors managed only one run the rest of the way. The team left eight runners on base and went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Roman Anthony struck out four times in five at-bats, while Duran, Marcelo Mayer, Carlos Narvaez and Wilyer Abreu all struck out twice. "We had our chances, we didn't cash in," Boston manager Alex Cora said. "But shoot, that guy (Wheeler), he's one of the best -- if not the best -- in the big leagues." On Tuesday, the Red Sox will give the ball to Richard Fitts (1-3, 4.28), who will be making his ninth start of the season. He pitched well in his last appearance, a 9-3 win over the Colorado Rockies on July 7, when he gave up three runs (two earned) in 5 2/3 innings. It was the first major league win for Fitts, who said that he planned to frame the lineup card. "Good velocity, mixing up the off-speed pitches," said Cora, adding that Fitts has "been good for us -- really good. He gives us a chance to win almost every time." Fitts will be opposing the Phillies for the first time. Sanchez is 1-0 with a 6.43 ERA in two career starts appearances (one start) vs. Boston. --Field Level Media

Why Man Utd are angry with Brentford over Bryan Mbeumo transfer after finally landing £71million star

BRYAN MBEUMO claimed he chose Manchester United because he believes he WILL win silverware with his 'dream' club. Cameroon ace Mbeumo completed his £71million move from Brentford in time to join Ruben Amorim's squad on today's flight to Chicago for the Prem's Summer Series games in the USA. 1 But while United are thrilled at pulling off what they regard as a major transfer 'coup', there is anger at Brentford's attempt to sell the African star to Spurs or Newcastle instead of Old Trafford. Mbeumo, 25, joined for £65m up front plus £6m in potential add-ons, nearly six weeks after United's opening £55m bid was rejected by the Bees, and said he was joining his boyhood side. He said: 'As soon as I knew there was a chance to join Manchester United, I had to take the opportunity to sign for the club of my dreams. 'This is the team whose shirt I wore growing up. My mentality is to always be better than I was yesterday. 'I know that I have the spirit and character to reach another level here, learning from Ruben Amorim and playing alongside world-class players.' Mbeumo added he had been sold the club's vision both on and off the pitch. He explained: 'Everybody told me about the environment that is being created here and how exciting the plans are for the future. 'This is a massive club, with an incredible stadium and amazing fans, we are all really determined to challenge for the biggest trophies.' The deal followed United's £62.5m capture of Wolves' Brazilian Matheus Cunha, with the duo set to be in harness when Amorim's side face West Ham in New Jersey on Saturday in the opening leg of the three-match tournament. United are delighted with the signing, believing they beat off competition from Arsenal as well as Spurs and Newcastle, while there was also a late move by Chelsea. Club chiefs feel the deal proves the club is still showing a desire to spend big but also making football rather than commercial decisions. Amorim's need for attacking reinforcements has been significantly met, while Mbeumo's decision is seen as evidence that United remain a club that top players want to join. There is, though, a degree of frustration and disappointment at Brentford's handling of the deal, with the asking price understood to have reached a total of £77m at one point. United believe Brentford did not want to sell to them and tried hard to complete a deal with either Newcastle or Tottenham rather than allowing him an easy passage to Old Trafford, including suggesting his wage requirements were lowered to allow them to demand a higher fee. Brentford, though, argue that Mbeumo was told that was a way to break the impasse over the fee, when United were unwilling to reach the Bees' asking price. They insist United attempted to blow their rivals out of the water by making Mbeumo a mega-money wages offer but then used that in an attempt to crowbar them into accepting a lower fee, which brought a strong-arm response. And with former Bees boss Thomas Frank now in charge at Spurs, he would have told Tottenham Brentford's bottom price, meaning the North Londoners started with a higher offer than United. Nevertheless, the deal is a positive move for United and comes as Marcus Rashford closes in on his loan move to Barcelona, with the England star having travelled to Catalonia for his medical. United could also up their interest in Aston Villa's Argentine World Cup-winning keeper Emi Martinez, with Andre Onana a major doubt for the start of the season after his hamstring injury. And with Rashford on his way, the rest of the Old Trafford 'bomb squad' will be left behind at Carrington when Amorim and his squad fly at lunchtime. Jadon Sancho, Antony, Tyrell Malacia and Alejandro Garnacho have all been told they have no future at United.
