Gabriel Bonfim vs. Stephen Thompson prediction, pick, start time for UFC on ESPN 70
Last event: 2-3
UFC main cards, 2025: 64-48-1
Gabriel Bonfim vs. Stephen Thompson UFC on ESPN 70 preview
Bonfim (17-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) enters the biggest fight of his career thus far as a winner of back-to-back fights. Last July, he rebounded from his first career loss with a unanimous decision win over Ange Loosa. He followed that up with a second-round submission of Khoas Williams in February. ... Thompson (17-8-1 MMA, 12-8-1 UFC) is in an opposite position, coming after back-to-back losses. "Wonderboy" last won against Kevin Holland in December 2022. Since then, he was submitted by Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 296 and knocked out by Joaquin Buckley at UFC 307.
Gabriel Bonfim vs. Stephen Thompson UFC on ESPN 70 expert pick, prediction
The co-main event on ESPN features a potential crossroads fight at welterweight between Stephen Thompson and Gabriel Bonfim.
Despite being a longtime Thompson fan, I can see why the betting public isn't too high on his chances against younger competition at this point in his career.
On-paper mileage and age gaps aside, Thompson has shown a noted deterioration in his footwork down the stretch of fights, particularly when forced to retreat or maneuver along the fence. Although Thompson's distance management sensibilities were among the elite for a time, every exchange starts to feel like much more of a gamble in recent years.
Thompson will have the bigger cage to move around in for this fight, but I'm not sure how safe that will keep him, considering that Bonfim seems to have solid level-changing takedowns both coming forward and off the counter.
I wouldn't mind a "Wonderboy" upset, but the pick is Bonfim by submission in Round 2.
Gabriel Bonfim vs. Stephen Thompson UFC on ESPN 70 odds
The oddsmakers and the public are heavily favoring the younger fighter, listing Bonfim -430 and Thompson +300 via FanDuel.
Gabriel Bonfim vs. Stephen Thompson UFC on ESPN 70 start time, how to watch

ESPN's awful Home Run Derby coverage won't be missed after MLB split
Congratulations to Cal Raleigh, the MLB home-run leader who continued his slugging ways last night in the Home Run Derby where he became the first catcher in league history to win the competition. I hope he had a lot more fun winning it than we did watching at home because whew, the broadcast was some rough viewing. I came away from the Derby thinking it was too long, and I don't think I've ever felt that way about watching dudes hit dingers. But after dedicating almost three hours of my night squinting to see a white blur that ESPN's cameras could barely track, I couldn't help but feel like there was a better way I could've spent that time. Don't get me wrong. There were some high moments. Junior Caminero put on a show with his surprise run to the final. Oneil Cruz hit moonshot after moonshot. And Raleigh delivered the dramatics. But it was a three-hour show! That's longer than the average baseball game. And I repeat, ESPN's cameras barely provided the thing we came to see. Which made the long derby so much harder to stomach. HR THIEVERY: Here's the kid who nearly robbed Caminero The obvious issue with ESPN's coverage was the split-screen view, which was supposed to provide a shot of the batter on one side and a shot of where his hits were traveling on the other. But far too often, the ball-tracking cameras were left staring into space at nothing in particular... or locked in too long on an outfield spot where a non-dinger may or may not have landed... or showing player and fan reactions to home runs we never actually got to see at home -- which actually became my preferred view over the bad ball-tracking. But that wasn't the only issue. The coverage was a turn-off from the start when ESPN used Pat McAfee to do player introductions despite him having no apparent connection to baseball or the host city, Atlanta. The network used the Derby as another venue to force its high-cost former punter personality down our throats. And bruh, who asked for this? Then, there was the moment in the semifinals when the in-house audio at Truist Park began overpowering the broadcast audio, causing intermittent bursts of music to drown out Karl Ravech's commentary as Raleigh made his push past Cruz. Suddenly, the broadcast was hard to watch and listen. And by that point, the only thing that kept me around was a desire to see the thing through after suffering through so much already. Several people across social media pointed out how the Statcast broadcast on ESPN2 was better. I gave that a try, but better didn't mean it was perfect. The digital home run tracker on ESPN2 was a massive improvement over what was happening on the main broadcast, and there were some cool camera angles too. Kevin Brown had a delightful call of Cruz's 513-foot blast. But the "stat" cast predictably didn't have the same pageantry and spectator views of the main broadcast. A marriage of the two would have made for a better experience over both. So, what's the solution to making a three-hour home run derby easier to watch? That'll be a question for whichever network picks it up next, as ESPN's coverage of MLB ends after this season after the sides agreed to opt out of their contract together. Thankfully for whoever's next, the bar for improvement hasn't been set very high. Is UNO coming to a casino near you? This is a question people have apparently been asking after the popular card game's manufacturer, Mattel, announced the Friday debut of its new UNO Social Club at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, and that more social clubs would be opening across the country. And if I'm being honest, security concerns aside, it didn't sound like the worst idea in the world. I would absolutely lay a few bucks down to draw-four a stranger to death. But that's not exactly what's happening, as UNO explained this morning in an Instagram post clearing up the confusion: "We hate to be the bearers of bad news but the casino floor isn't ready for us yet. We've been told that while they do have tight security, it's not robust enough for UNO at this time." Well, that's a bummer. I guess there's hope in that "yet" word. Here's Charles Curtis with more of UNO's response. Quick Hits: Emmy nominations ... Johnny Furphy's poster ... and more Thanks for reading. We'll be back with more tomorrow. 'Idiotic!': ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky furious over Texans C.J. Stroud omission from top 10
The city of Houston erupted with anger after another top 10 list didn't feature Houston Texans starting quarterback C.J. Stroud as part of their top 10 rankings. It's natural for fans to feel frustrated since even with an abysmal offensive line and an incompetent offensive coordinator, Stroud still threw for 20 touchdown passes and led Houston to a second AFC South division title last season. It's not common for commentators to get heated over a ranking their company helped create. Then again, Dan Orlovsky isn't like more analysts on ESPN. After Stroud was omitted from ESPN's list of the top 10 NFL quarterbacks, which included the votes from a group of NFL executives, coaches and scouts, Orlovsky defended the second-year quarterback and the trials he was forced to overcome just to lead his team back to the postseason. Meanwhile, several other passers with better resources had worst seasons and still were given the benefit of the doubt. "C.J. Stroud not being on the list is, I think, silly, dumb, idiotic," Orlovsky said during Monday's edition of ESPN's First Take. "People said after C.J. Stroud's rookie year, 'best rookie season we ever had.' ... Last year, bottom five offensive line, he lost his No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 receivers for significant stretches. "His offensive coordinator never evolved. Complete disaster around him, and he was somewhat similar, performance wise. So the guy that people were saying like 'he's the next Joe Burrow, top-5 [quarterback], all of a sudden he's out of the top-10? That for me is probably the biggest gripe." The top four quarterbacks in the NFL are pretty clear at this point, even if the order differs based on personality. Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Joe Burrow and Lamar Jackson should be the Mount Rushmore of passers heading into training camp with a real debate beginning at No. 5. Stroud, who last season set records for the Texans en route to winning Offensive Rookie of the Year, appeared at No. 7 entering 2024. While his interception total doubled, he also was playing with Pro Bowl wideout Stefon Diggs for half the season, Pro Bowl target Nico Collins for five games and limited success behind the offensive line that allowed 54 sacks. Meanwhile, Jayden Daniels, this year's Offensive Rookie of the Year, was listed at No. 5 following his breakout season. Should he struggle next season, will he drop to an "honorable mention," or will voters blame Kliff Kingsbury and the lack of stable receivers as an excuse for his setback play? And again, Houston's offense wasn't horrendous behind Stroud last season. The Texans dropped six spots in scoring after a woeful finish to the regular season. Stroud's interception count increased from just five in 2023 to 12 in 2024, but his completion percentage (63.9% to 63.2%) rarely differed. He also still finished top 12 in passer rating and QBR without a consistent No. 1 healthy option in the passing game. The hope is for Houston's offense to explode this fall with the new additions. While Diggs and Tank Dell are out -- at least for the start of the new season -- the Texans used three draft picks on weapons in Iowa State wide receivers Jayden Higgins (No. 34) and Jaylin Noel (No. 82), plus USC running back Woody Marks (No. 127). The Texans also added Christian Kirk from Jacksonville to compete for reps in the slot and Nick Chubb from Cleveland to take pressure off Pro Bowler Joe Mixon. Stroud might never live up to becoming a quarterback who throws for 40 touchdowns and 4,900 yards, but he still remains a solid game-day improviser and thrower of the football. With fewer turnovers, fewer sacks and a return to healthy play from his personnel, Stroud should return this time next offseason as a clear top-10 quarterback with no debate.
