Court approves disposal of seized animal parts in Sibu

SIBU (May 20): The Magistrates' Court here today allowed applications by the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) for the disposal of about half a tonne of wild animals' parts, including freezers used to store them, which were seized from residential units, shophouses and pasar tamu.
Senior assistant registrar Jessica Lee, sitting as magistrate, allowed the applications filed by the wildlife officer pursuant to Section 48 of the Wild Life Protection Ordinance 1998 (Chapter 26) and Section 407A of the Criminal Procedure Code (Act 593).
According to the applications submitted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Ronald Felix Hardin of the State Attorney-General's Chambers appearing on behalf of SFC, all the seized exhibits were of perishable nature, and the freezers were equipment provided under Section 407A of the Criminal Procedure Code (Act 593).
Furthermore, there were constraints in proper storage space at the Sibu Regional Office.
'One of the suspects has since absconded despite Warrant of Arrest being issued by the trial judge at the Sessions Court in Sibu in the midst of trial proceedings,' he added.
Among the seized wild animal meat were cuts from wild boar (Sus barbatus Suidae species), deer (Cervus Unicolor species), reptile belonging to Python species, and one lesser mouse-deer (Tragulus kanchil species).
The suspects were being investigated under Section 37(1) of the Wild Life Protection Ordinance 1998 (Chapter 26).

MIRI (July 3): Two Penan men under remand for allegedly obstructing Sarawak Forest Department (SFD) officers from discharging their duties last week were released on bond by the Magistrates' Court today. Senior Assistant Registrar Mohammad Helmi Ahmad Jani issued the order following an application by a prosecuting officer from the SFD. In the application, the prosecuting officer requested that the pair, aged 52 and 57, be released on SFD bond pending further instructions from the State Attorney-General's Chambers. They were arrested by police on June 28 and remanded for four days until today. The case is being investigated further under Section 103(1) of the Forestry Ordinance 2015 (Chapter 71) for obstructing or interfering with forest officers, police or public servants in the course of their official duties. They are also being investigated under Section 26 of the same Ordinance for offences relating to encroachment on a forest reserve or protected forest. Both men were represented by lawyer Abun Sui Anyit. Meanwhile, SFD in a statement said the investigation papers will be submitted to the State Attorney-General for further action. SIBU (July 2): A married couple, said to be the masterminds of a drug syndicate since 2015, was charged in the Magistrates' Court here today with trafficking and possessing illicit narcotics. No plea was recorded from Tie Teck Hock, 52, and his wife Lee Chee Fei, 45, after the charges, framed under the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) 1952, were read to them in Foochow before Magistrate Oon Kork Chern. On the first charge, Tie is accused of trafficking 1,030.80g of methamphetamine at the corridor of a food premises in Jalan Pedada at around 10pm on June 12, 2025. On the second charge, the couple is jointly accused of trafficking 6,055.90g of methamphetamine in a storeroom under the staircase of a house on Lorong Permai Jaya 9D1B1 at around 10.45pm the same day. Both charges are framed under Section 39B(1)(a) of the DDA, punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same Act, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment, and if not sentenced to death, be whipped not less than 12 strokes, upon conviction. On the third and fourth charges, Tie and Lee are jointly accused of possessing 2,078.90g of ketamine and 2,022.15g of nimetazepam at the same Permai Jaya house on the same day and time. Both charges are framed under Section 12(2) of the DDA, punishable under Section 12(3) of the same Act and read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code, which provides for a fine not exceeding RM100,000 or imprisonment of up to five years or both, upon conviction. Tie was previously released on police bail on June 26 following the expiry of a seven-day remand extension but was re-arrested under the Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) Act 1985. Lee was similarly released on June 24 after a four-day remand extension but was also re-arrested under the same Act. KUCHING (July 2): A 41-year-old man was fined RM1,000 in default two weeks in jail by the Magistrates' Court here today for purchasing illegal lottery tickets using his mobile phone. Chok Lim Fong pleaded guilty before Magistrate Mason Jaro Lenya Barayan after being charged under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which carries a fine up to RM5,000 or imprisonment for up to six months, or both, upon conviction. Chok committed the offence at a premises in Matang Lang District, along Jalan Matang/Batu Kawa here at around 3pm on June 3. According to the facts of the case, a police team conducted a check on Chok, who was seated at the premises' counter table during the incident. Upon inspection, the mobile phone handed over by Chok was found to contain elements believed to be related to illegal public lottery sales. Police subsequently arrested Chok and seized the mobile phone, along with a piece of paper containing illegal lottery numbers and RM30 in cash. An analysis confirmed that the seized items comprised a complete set of public lottery numbers, indicating that a purchase had been made.
