ACC announces new format for the ACC Baseball Championship
'There's once again tremendous excitement surrounding ACC Baseball and today's announcement will bring an improved championship experience for our student-athletes, coaches, and fans alike,' stated ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips Ph.D. 'Nationally, the ACC is once again well-represented in the preseason polls and award lists. After what we know will be a highly competitive regular season, we look forward to showcasing all 16 baseball teams in Durham this May.'
Since 2006, the ACC Baseball Championship has been played in a pool play or round-robin style format. The tournament last expanded its field size in 2017, moving from 10 to 12 teams.
Under the new format, the top four seeds in the championship will be based off the performance in the regular season and will receive a double-bye into the quarterfinal round, which is scheduled to be held on Thursday and Friday. Seeds five through eight will earn a bye into Wednesday's second round. Seeds 9-16 will begin play with four first round games on Tuesday.
The single-elimination championship format will feature four games per day on Tuesday (first round) and Wednesday (second round). Two quarterfinal games will take place on both Thursday and Friday, while Saturday will host the two semifinal contests. Sunday will host the championship game.
Tickets for the 2025 ACC Baseball Championship will go on sale on Wednesday, February 12.
The ACC Baseball Championship returns to Durham, North Carolina, for the 14th time overall and the ninth time since 2009. Most recently, Clemson won the 2023 ACC Baseball Championship in Durham, defeating Miami 11-5 in the championship game. Duke, who calls Durham home, enters the 2025 season as the reigning league champions after winning the 2024 ACC Championship in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The new championship format will continue to highlight the strength of ACC Baseball, which sent eight teams to the NCAA Tournament in 2024, including an NCAA-record tying four teams to the Men's College World Series. Five ACC Baseball programs competed in the Super Regional round with four teams earning the right to host.
The altered format also provides an optimal postseason experience for teams and fans alike. The change was proposed by the league's 16 head coaches and has received direct support from the student-athletes. The single-elimination format provides a more exciting and easier to follow true championship format which will enhance fan engagement.

ESPN names Ohio State as a college basketball team that could 'make a jump' this season
We are all getting ready for the start of the college football season now just a little over a month away, but the college basketball season won't be too far behind. In fact, we're now within 100 days of the Ohio State basketball season, and ESPN took a big look at previewing hoops for 2025-2026 by looking at many different angles and storylines. The mix of old and new will have to come together for the Buckeyes to get back to the NCAA Tournament, but there's good reason to believe that it could happen. Here's what Borzello says about Ohio State this winter: "The Buckeyes showed flashes of their potential last season but couldn't quite string together a consistent run of form. With a terrific trio back in Bruce Thornton, Devin Royal and John Mobley Jr. -- plus the additions of Christoph Tilly and Brandon Noel up front -- Jake Diebler's team should find itself in the NCAA tournament." It sure seems like Ohio State hasn't had a shortage of talent over the last few years, but getting the team to come together and play as a team has been an issue that seems to be a problem in today's day and age of the transfer portal and name, image and likeness. Former Texas A&M guard has signed an international deal with the Maccabi Basketball Club
Former Texas A&M guard Tyrece "Boots" Radford solidified his standing as one of the program's more popular players over the last decade after transferring from Virginia Tech, following then-head coach Buzz Williams to College Station to join the Aggies ahead of the 2021 season. After three seasons, including two trips to the NCAA Tournament, Radford went undrafted. Following a brief stint in the NBA Summer League, his international career began. During the 2025 season, Radford played for Final Spor Genclik Bursa of the Basketbol Süper Ligi, a part of the Turkish Basketball Federation, and averaged 19.4 points, six rebounds, 4.8 assists, and 1.2 steals per game, which is very impressive for a first-year guard entering the international league. On Sunday, it was announced that Radford is returning to action and will join the Maccabi Basketball Club of Ra'anana in Israel for the 2025-2026 season. This is fairly typical in international play, as most players do not sign long-term contracts, unlike in the NBA. Based on his performance in Turkey last season, averaging nearly 20 points per game would have warranted a longer stay; however, that's just how quickly international player movement occurs. During his time at Texas A&M, Radford's elite defensive skill set translates perfectly to the NBA. However, his injury history, coupled with his lack of quickness, places him in a unique spot: still young enough, at the age of 26, to potentially land on an NBA roster in the near future. Suns' Khaman Maluach named summer league disappointment by NBA analyst
After debuting with the Phoenix Suns in the NBA Summer League, rookie Khaman Maluach was among the players whose struggles were highlighted by John Hollinger of The Athletic. Maluach finished by averaging 10 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.3 blocks on 35.7% shooting from the field in three appearances in Las Vegas, Nevada. He debuted with 14 points and five rebounds on July 11 in a win over the Washington Wizards. The 10th pick struggled a bit to shoot, going 10-of-28 from the field, including 3-of-13 from 3-point range. He also left much to be desired on the glass, Hollinger explained this week. Phoenix opted to take the Duke project, and I'll emphasize the word 'project' here; his was a rough entry to professional basketball. The 7-1 Maluach only posted a 13.5 percent rebound rate, took nearly half his shots from 3 and had one assist in 70 minutes. Watching from courtside made me more concerned about his hands, as contested rebounds and alley-oop opportunities escaped him at times. Maluach was named to the ACC All-Freshman Team last season at Duke, averaging 8.6 points, 6.6 rebounds and 1.3 blocks on 71.2% shooting from the field. He was highly touted due to his versatility as a player who can both shoot and defend, boasting a 7-foot, 6 3/4-inch wingspan. The 18-year-old has impressed teammates and coaches early on after joining the organization last month. He showcased each element of his game that attracted the Suns in a small sample size, though the team likely wanted to see a bit more on the court. Maluach is highly thought of by the Suns after the front office turned down trade offers to select him with the 10th pick. The team is eager to work with him and help take his game to the next level, starting in training camp.
