Kolkata: Several hundred cops blocked multiple entries to Nabanna to stop thousands of unemployed 'untainted' teachers from marching to Nabanna on Monday. The rally threw traffic in large parts of Kolkata and Howrah into a mess for better part of the day.
After hours of negotiations, the protesters — marching under the Jogya Shikshak Shikshika Adhikar Mancha, a platform representing 'untainted' candidates who sought a meeting with CM Mamata Banerjee and chief secretary Manoj Pant — said they would not budge and would continue to protest on the roaduntil the publication of a certified list of eligible candidates was uploaded on the West Bengal School Service Commission's website.
The protesters gave the govt "a deadline" until Monday midnight. A 20-member team — 18 teachers and two non-teaching staff — made the announcement at a press conference after meeting CS Pant on Monday evening.
Suman Biswas, who was in the meeting, said: "We demanded a clear list to be uploaded on the website; that's the only demand we have at this stage. Why should we take responsibility for this scam?" Mehebub Mandal, another prominent face of the protest, said, "They are trying to put all responsibilities on us, saying the uploaded list might create legal issues in the review process.

The agitation threw traffic as far as CR Avenue in central Kolkata out of gear for around three hours post 1 pm. The traffic tail on Strand Road reached Fairlie Place till around 4 pm as most Howrah-Kolkata vehicles were routed through Howrah bridge.
In Howrah, the traffic situation was worse, with almost all roads to Kolkata under tight security.
Even the bylanes in Mandirtala were barricaded, hampering normal movement. There were concerns about unrest surrounding the Nabanna Abhijan even as the protesters gathered at the Howrah station around noon. Huge metal barricades were installed at several key locations like Bangabashi crossing on GT Road, Ramakrishnapur Ghat Gate along Foreshore Road, Kazipara crossing, and Satragachi crossing.
Additionally, small guard rails were installed in the areas adjacent to Nabanna, such as Shibpur, Mandirtala, and Belepole. RAF personnel were deployed at each point and two water cannons were kept ready. An additional 2,000 policemen were brought in from various commissionerates.

Bangladesh Government To Demolish Satyajit Ray's Ancestral Home In Dhaka, Mamata Banerjee Seeks Centre's Intervention
Dhaka: Eminent filmmaker Satyajit Ray's ancestral home in Dhaka is being demolished by Bangladeshi authorities, said West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday. The century-old property in Dhaka's Horikishore Ray Chowdhury Road belonged to Ray's grandfather, the renowned litterateur Upendra Kishore Ray Chowdhury. Citing local media reports, Banerjee said that demolition work on the historic property has already begun. "This news is extremely distressing. The Ray family is one of the foremost bearers and carriers of Bengali culture. Upendra Kishore is a pillar of Bengal's renaissance. Therefore, I believe this house is intricately tied to the cultural history of Bengal," the Chief Minister said in a post on X. She also appealed to the Mohammad Yunus government in Bangladesh, and all the conscientious people of that country, to take steps to preserve this heritage-laden house." Banerjee also urged the Indian government to intervene in the matter. — Mamata Banerjee (@MamataOfficial) July 15, 2025 Upendra Kishore Ray Chowdhury's house-- a prominent archaeological landmark-- was formerly used as the Mymensingh Children's Academy but had reportedly fallen into disrepair after years of neglect by the authorities. According to the Bangladesh Department of Archaeology, the house was built more than a century ago. After the partition of 1947, the property came under government ownership. "The house has been left abandoned for 10 years. Shishu Academy activities have been operating from a rented space," said Md Mehedi Zaman, Dhaka's Children Affairs Officer, told Daily Star. A semi-concrete building with several rooms will be built to start academy activities, he said, adding that the demolition is being carried out with necessary approvals. When asked why such a historically significant building was being demolished, the official said the building posed a serious risk for children, when they gather at the compound.

Committed to eradicating evil practices life black magic: State govt to Kerala HC
Kochi: A new affidavit submitted by the state govt in high court on Tuesday indicates that the govt seems to have significantly softened its stand on a legislating against black magic, witchcraft, sorcery and other inhumane practices carried out under the guise of supernatural powers. A previous affidavit filed by home department deputy secretary had asserted that the council of ministers, on July 5, 2023, had decided not to proceed with the Kerala Prevention and Eradication of Inhuman Evil Practices, Sorcery and Black Magic Bill, 2019. It was also contended that this was a policy decision which may not be interfered with by the court. Upon perusing the affidavit, the division bench had noted that it failed to clarify whether the state endorsed such practices or had merely chosen not to eradicate them. HC had also directed home department to file a detailed affidavit clarifying the state's stand on the issue and the steps it proposes to take. In Tuesday's affidavit, filed by home department additional chief secretary Biswanath Sinha, the state clarified that although the proposed legislation has been deferred, the govt has no intention of stepping back from the subject. The matter remains under active consideration, and the state remains committed to evolving a legal framework that will effectively curb harmful practices while fully respecting constitutional rights and cultural sensitivities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like เปรียบเทียบสเปรด: ระหว่าง Bitcoin และ Ethereum CFDs IC Markets อ่านเพิ่มเติม Undo The affidavit also outlined the challenges in legislating against such practices, particularly in balancing constitutional religious freedoms with the need to prevent abuse and harm. It emphasised that it is extremely difficult to draw a legally sustainable distinction between faith, belief and superstition. A matter of deep spiritual belief for one individual or community may be viewed as superstition by another. Any legislative attempt to regulate or prohibit practices considered superstitious requires legal clarity and cultural sensitivity and must therefore be preceded by careful and detailed deliberations, the affidavit stated.
