Melissa Rivers got famous comedians in a room together to honor her mom, Joan. Just don't call it a roast.
Ahead of Joan Rivers: A Dead Funny All-Star Tribute special, airing on May 13 on NBC, Melissa Rivers and an A-list group of comedians and actors struck a pose with a gold urn. Nikki Glaser pretended she almost dropped it. Rachel Brosnahan acted like she was going to pour a martini in it. Tiffany Haddish balanced it precariously on the palm of one hand.
'That's not the real urn,' Melissa told Yahoo Entertainment as if the idea was unfathomable, even though Joan's actual ashes were literally shipped around the world after her death in 2014.
'I originally wanted to do a bit in the greenroom called 'urn point of view,'' said Melissa, who produced the special. 'Have a GoPro camera in the urn and have it judging people — looking everyone's outfits up and down. The urn cam. I got shot down on that one.'
For what it's worth, Joan's actual ashes were lost after the special taped. More on that in a minute.
The televised tribute came together somewhat miraculously, said the Melissa Rivers' Group Text Podcast host. It taped in one night at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, during the 20th annual New York Comedy Festival in November 2024, with a talent roster also including Chelsea Handler, Aubrey Plaza, Joel McHale, Jeff Ross, Sarah Silverman, Margaret Cho and Tracy Morgan. Getting the comics there, from their tours and sets, for the brief window was tricky, but they showed up in force for the comedy trailblazer.
'What was amazing was how many people found a way to get there, even if it meant staying somewhere, flying in from somewhere or flying out to somewhere,' said Melissa. 'It was a 'meant to be' kind of thing, and I'm really proud of my work on this.'
Despite the title and the urn photo shoot, 'It's not a roast. It's a celebration,' she said. 'And yet they do make fun of her.'
Glaser, who's had a meteoric rise over the last year, 'was a huge fan of my mother's … and thrilled to be asked to be a part of it,' Melissa said, adding that she thinks Joan 'would really like' the Golden Globe host's comedy. She said that 'stylistically,' their 'timing is very similar.'
How would Joan, who was sharp-tongued with biting wit, have fared professionally in 2025 amid this era of cancel culture?
'I think she would have found a way to make fun of cancel culture,' Melissa said. 'She would have turned cancel culture on its head and made fun of what you cannot do … just like Dave Chappelle — and I would hope she would be grandfathered in like Dave Chappelle was.'
Being the gatekeeper for her larger-than-life mother's legacy is not easy, but it's something she takes seriously. This summer, the National Comedy Center will open its Joan Rivers exhibition, complete with her famed joke archive. While a limited TV series with Kathryn Hahn never happened, Joan fans may get a biopic — eventually.
'We've had a movie in development with Sony for quite a while,' Melissa said. 'The conversation started during the very end of COVID. We've been going through the script process, the writing process and then we had the [Hollywood writers] strike, so now we're just getting back on track. Coming out of TV, [where] things go so fast, I don't know how these movie people do it … having to be that slow.'
As for the former Fashion Police host's dream casting, 'I'm going to keep my mouth shut on that,' she said. There are 'conversations in progress.'
Personally, 2025 has been a wild year for Melissa. In January, she lost everything — including Joan's actual ashes and those of her father, Edgar Rosenberg, who died by suicide in 1987 — in the Palisades Fire.
'Unfortunately, no, the ashes did not survive,' she said. 'I just didn't think to grab them. Why would I? I didn't think our house was going to burn down. It's L.A. — it's not like we haven't evacuated before. I could just go get a scoop of the house and call it a day, and have my mom, Uncle Tommy, and my dad and all the dogs. I'm probably going to go do that.'
Melissa did take her mother's Emmy, a photo of her father and a drawing her mother did of Melissa and son Cooper when evacuating. She also had a ring of her mother's that she had recently worn to an event as well as her parents' watches.
After the fire, Melissa moved five times in 11 weeks. She's now settled in a rental in the L.A. area. Will she rebuild? She's thinking about it but taking a 'wait and see' approach.
'I don't know yet,' she said. 'I'm not letting go of my lot, but I'm trying to stay very disciplined in our thinking because, honestly, nobody knows how anything is going to go. Luckily, my house has its plans, so it would be a much easier process. … Fortunately, I can sort of take a wait and see. I don't want to be the first one, and don't want to be the last one.'
On the brighter side, two months after the fires, Melissa, the self-described 'worst bride ever,' married attorney Steve Mitchel in Jackson Hole, Wyo.
They 'absolutely' thought about postponing the wedding. 'A lot of people said we should, and a lot of people said we shouldn't,' she said. However, the 'loudest voices saying, 'Do not cancel,'' were friends who had also lost homes in the L.A. fires, so they pressed on.
The wedding was 'very nontraditional,' which is what she wanted. 'I always said, 'I want to have a party where a wedding breaks out,' Melissa said, 'and that is what we did.'
Her vows fit the nontraditional theme because 'I'm not gonna promise anything in a room full of people,' she said of her second wedding. 'I'm not having you put that on tape to come back and bite me. And I don't think I can vow to do something, but I can vow to not to.'
The one thing she did do was a mother-son dance with 'my little man,' Cooper. The 24-year-old recently moved out on his own but also lost everything in the fire. 'He's been rebuilding too,' she said of her only child.
How does she stay positive when bad things happen?
'I don't think I necessarily stay positive,' Melissa replied. 'I stay in forward momentum. My mom used to say: 'You get a weekend wallow.' Obviously, that's a saying, [you may need more than one weekend], but that means you get an appropriate amount of time, and then you get up and you start moving forward.'
She continued, 'I learned that with my dad. Some days, moving forward was only that I was able to get out of bed. And the same with my mom. You had to allow yourself to have the days where you couldn't, and then the next day you could get across the room. It's about chin out, eyes forward, because your forward momentum will make things change. Better or worse, that's to be seen. But if you're just sitting in it, you're doing nothing. So it's not so much optimism or good attitude, it's more I've been raised and taught: You go forward.'

And for Biggy Bailey, it was a series of two steps forward and many steps back that ended his journey for the $250,000 prize. The final episode of the NBC reality series had the final three competitors – Biggy, Peter Weber and Rick Szabo – get tested on all the destinations they visited over the course of the season. Get a question right, and you could choose to step forward, or send someone backward, putting them further away from surviving the round. And it was in this game that the secret alliance between Rick and Peter finally came to the surface. Having been forged since the Bachelor and Traitors star entered the bus as a late entry, the two men had been working under the radar for the entirety of the game. "I mean, you could see it all happen at once. It all dawned on him in real time, as we were watching him. As he was having to take that step backwards and another step backwards, you could see his face, and he was crushed. Biggy is a bit of a force of nature, and a very honest guy who I think played a really straight up game and was kind of friends with everybody. And to have that happen, he didn't see it coming at all. It was hard to watch. That being said, it made for a great moment of television." After Biggy's blindside, Peter and Rick underwent their final test, a riddle-filled scavenger hunt to the biggest landmarks of London. After keeping apace the entire day, the two men diverged at the very last clue. And it was ultimately Rick who made the correct call, as his seasonlong attention to detail and European knowledge had earned the professional bird watcher a nice little nest egg. Jeffrey Dean Morgan talks with Parade about hiw reactions to the finale, as well as what he would want to keep the same and change should Destination X get renewed for Season 2. What was your reaction to that in the moment?I honestly felt so bad for Biggy. I mean, you could see it all happen at once. It all dawned on him in real time, as we were watching him. As he was having to take that step backwards and another step backwards, you could see his face, and he was crushed. You could feel it. And I mean, honestly, I felt bad. There were a couple of moments in the show when I felt bad. One was Mack's elimination, and then another was Biggy's, where you felt it. And Biggy is a bit of a force of nature, and a very honest guy who I think played a really straight up game and was kind of friends with everybody. And to have that happen, he didn't see it coming at all. It was hard to watch. It was hard to watch that realization. That being said, it made for a great moment of television. [Laughs.] The final task had Peter and Rick racing through London, solving clues to get to the final destination containing the winnings. Each guy selected a different place. But if they both chose Big Ben, who would have won? Would it just be whoever got there first?Here's the thing, because we only have an hour that we can show the game, there were two or three ties before we even got to Big Ben. They kept tying. So I remember it came down to them being in these taxi cabs and us filming. And it was like, "They tied again. They tied again." And so thank God we were running out of things to ask them at that certain point. But at the end, when Rick got to Big Ben, it was a legit win. He was the only one that was close. If they had both picked Big Ben, they had picked the same place three times before we even got to Big Ben. And I don't know what we would have done. I think if they got there at the same time, thank God they didn't. I don't know what we would have done. Split the money, pony up another 100 and kick 250 grand out of my pocket, probably! brought in three reality TV alums to play against newbies. What did you think about how that played out, and would that be something you're interested in doing for Season 2?I think it makes for good TV if the audience knows some people. I know they were really excited to see JaNa and Peter when they came on. I don't watch Love Island or The Bachelor; I've never seen these shows. My first conversation with JaNa, she announced to me that she was America's sweetheart, and I had no idea what she was talking about. I knew going in that we were going to have some reality show ringers join the bus halfway through, and I was told that the winner of Big Brother would be on to start the show. I never in a million years would have thought Josh would have been eliminated first. He was pretty smart, and I thought he kind of had a handle on where we were, especially being that he had been in Rome four weeks earlier with his family. But I think that set a tone immediately that maybe this wasn't going to be an easy deal for anybody, much less a reality show TV veteran. And then as far as JaNa and Peter, the people that have done these shows before know how it works. They know not only about the competition, but they know how to go and sit in front of a camera and work it to their advantage. They're very savvy, they're very smart, and it's just different. But you see how that changed with even the newbies, and how smart and how fast they become as the game goes on. I give big props to the casting department. Now, going forward, say we do a Season 2. I kind of like the mix of having some newbies as well as some veterans. And maybe also it would behoove us to do kind of what Traitors does, and have an "all-star" sort of thing of reality show vets come on and do the show. But I like the newbies. I like the guys [who] have never done this before. And you know, someone like Rick, who gets to walk away with the big prize, who we'd never seen before, a bird watcher from Canada, I think that's kind of cool. I wonder what the audience would think if Peter had come on Episode 3 and then won it, if people think that that's fair. Generally, if were to be renewed, what would be some of the biggest things you would want to change for Season 2?Well, I think the great thing about this show is, as a crew – I mean, it's such a great crew. First of all, I need to give a ton of credit to the writers and directors and just the crew itself that have worked together for many years. A lot of the same people [who] do this show do Traitors. It was really kind of an all-star group of guys and gals that did this show. And so I think the key is to bring them all back. And I think that I was able to kind of find my legs and what I was doing. It took me a minute; this is my first kind of go around. And also we found a lot of the show in post; we had so much footage. Then it's about kind of finding a show that is going to be engaging to the viewers. I think we can even bring it up as far as how hard the challenges are and the questions and make it even smarter. I don't think anyone anticipated how smart all these players were. Not that anybody was dumb, but you wouldn't think that anybody hadn't left the United States would be so smart with where they were in Europe. I mean, you think you have a super hard challenge, and God, sometimes it was just ripped through them so fast. And it'd be like, "God damn it. Didn't anticipate that!" We just didn't anticipate the gameplay. And so I think it's going to be bringing it up a notch and make it a little bit harder. Because the audience that you find out is playing along too. Shocking 'America's Got Talent' act leaves judges Mel B and Sofia Vergara shuddering in fear: 'So scary!'
A couple of America's Got Talent contestants just made judges Mel B and Sofia Vergara part of the act, much to their distress. It happened on Tuesday's episode when two buff contestants took the stage, where they had set up a makeshift gym, not to lift heavy dumbbells but to throw them to each other. The men, Darien Johnson and Scott Mathison, explained that they found each other through social media, where they both share their extreme workouts. They've since collaborated on videos that have received up to two million views. After the former Spice Girl gave them a positive review — "that must be hard work!" — she and Vergara were invited to take the stage, without a description of what they'd be doing. The women were then instructed to stand back-to-back, after which the performers began to toss the the weights over their heads. "If you had to lose one, which one would it be?" their fellow judge Simon Cowell joked to Howie Mandel. Meanwhile, the women were visibly rattled by what was happening around them. "I don't want to be here," Vergara protested, although she stayed in place. Mel B insisted that Vergara "hold my hand!" She kept her eyes squeezed shut. In all, Johnson and Mathison passed the huge barbels back and forth over their heads six times. When it was over, the two judges hugged. As they walked back to their seats, Vergara noted that the experience had been "so scary." Mel B raved: "Oh my god. What you do is proper. Fit and hot." It was a first for the show, Vergara thought. And she appreciated the act too: "It looks really hard. Looking at your bodies, I can tell."Cowell and Mandel were also fans. "I think it's entertaining," Mandel said in his assessment. "It's a strength act. It's an agility act. It inspires people to be in shape. I think you checked a lot of boxes. I loved it." All four judges gave the act the go-ahead, which means they will face off against contestants doing equally dangerous acts such as roller-skating while performing aerialist stunts or throwing knives.
