John Leguizamo Admits He 'Learned a Lot About Respect' in His 'Starter Marriage': 'You Gotta Work' (Exclusive)

Yahoo7 hours ago
John Leguizamo tells PEOPLE about the "work" that goes into a long-term relationship, reflecting briefly on his first marriage to actress Yelba Zoe McCourt
"I don't think I'd be the same husband or man if I hadn't gone through the experience of the first marriage," the Leguizamo Does America host says
Leguizamo has been married to Justine Maurer since 2003, and they share two childrenJohn Leguizamo knows that love alone isn't enough to sustain a long-term relationship.
The Leguizamo Does America host, who wed Justine Maurer in 2003, was previously married from 1994 to 1996. In the new season of his MSNBC docuseries, he jokes to chef Melissa Araujo of Alma in New Orleans while discussing the gentle touch of shaping dough for Honduran baleada: "If I had your advice, maybe my first marriage would've survived."
Asked what he actually learned from his first marriage, to actress Yelba Zoe McCourt, that has helped his enduring bond with Maurer, Leguizamo, 64, tells PEOPLE, "The starter marriage was definitely very important for my maturation."
The Menu actor calls that time period "a life learning experience, because I don't think I'd be the same husband or man if I hadn't gone through the experience of the first marriage."

"I learned a lot about respect," he says. "I learned a lot about compromise. I learned a lot about that it doesn't happen by itself — that marriage is really work, and you gotta work, and you gotta put work into it, and you gotta put yourself into it."
That work for Leguizamo and Maurer — who share daughter Allegra, 25, and son Lucas, 24 — is in part of the mantra, "You really gotta stay interested in each other, and do things together."
"You gotta be interested in your wife's interests, and she's got to be interested in your interests," the Super Mario Bros. star explains. "Even if you're not interested, you've gotta act like you're interested ... that's how you grow together. That's how you grow towards each other."
"And it's doing activities together, to stay connected," he continues. "You can't allow each other to grow apart and grow separately. It'll never work. You won't. It'll end."
Leguizamo and Maurer both previously opened up to PEOPLE about their 30-year love story, when the actor said he "did not want a tumultuous relationship" when they got together.
"I wanted peace. I wanted to have an oasis. And Justine gave me all of that," recalled the Bob Trevino Likes It star. 'She became a healing force in my life."

There, of course, have been differences. 'We're both from New York, but I went to public schools; she went to private schools,' Leguizamo said. 'All my friends were Latin and Black, and all her friends were White and Jewish."
"But that's what made it exciting and thrilling. It wasn't just preaching to the choir; it was converting somebody, in a way," he added. "I like talking about my culture to Justine because it helps me understand where I came from and how far I've come.'
Leguizamo Does America season 2 premieres July 6, at 9 p.m. ET on MSNBC, with new episodes airing weekly through August.

Jennifer Aniston Jokes That Season 4 of ‘The Morning Show' Is ‘Not Friends'

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." Spoilers below. What's next for The Morning Show? For a series that literally began its latest season IN SPACE, the possibilities are endless. Season 3 went from the outer layers of earth's atmosphere to the bowels of the Capitol on January 6th—all while navigating the network's pending sale to an Elon Musk-like billionaire, Paul Marks (Jon Hamm). The series, which began as a reflection of the #MeToo movement, continued to rip from headlines, this latest season being the overrun of Roe vs. Wade, and the current state of media. In the end, Alex is making power moves, Bradley is about to do time, and UBA is heading into a drastically different direction than we thought. So, where to now? On May 28, it was announced that season 4 will premiere on September 17 on Apple TV+. From there, the 10-episode season will release weekly every Friday until November 19. We're expecting to see much more of stars Jennifer Aniston (Alex) and Reese Witherspoon (Bradley), as well as Billy Crudup (Cory), Mark Duplass (Chip), Nestor Carbonell (Yanko), Karen Pittman (Mia), Greta Lee (Stella), and Nicole Beharie (Chris). Oscar winner Marion Cotillard will also join the cast as Celine Dumont, 'a savvy operator from a storied European family,' according to Apple. And according to The Hollywood Reporter, Jeremy Irons, Aaron Pierre, William Jackson Harper, and Boyd Holbrook will appear in season 4 as well. Hamm will also be returning. But one character we won't be seeing again? Laura Peterson, Bradley's love interest. Per Variety, actress Julianna Margulies will not return for season 4, a decision reportedly made prior to Margulies's controversial comments on a podcast in November 2023. Season 4 is confirmed to have a time jump. The show is now set to take place in spring 2024 after the merger has been finalized. The showrunner already hinted that this might happen in a previous conversation with THR. 'I think you probably have to have some kind of time jump, because it takes so long to write and shoot and post the show,' she said. 'You don't want to get too far behind in real time, in terms of the era we're playing and when people are watching it. But I think those time jumps, actually, are great. Because they allow for really surprising reveals at the top of the season. It's a little bit of: 'How did they get there? Wait, he's doing what? Those two are together?!' I think just on a transparent deliciousness of story, you can have a lot of fun with this big cast.' Now, the storied media conglomerates UBA and NBN will join forces in a massive deal that somehow turned out to be more beneficial than selling to billionaire Paul Marks. (He who surveilled journalists and lied to NASA.) But as Mia and Stella hint in the control room, this new chapter is going to lead to a lot of changes in both companies: in leadership, talent, and staff. With two major companies coming together, projects and roles will double up. Will we see intense competition arise between anchors and producers between companies? Whose jobs are at stake? 'I think mergers are always messy, whether they're personal or corporate,' showrunner Charlotte Stoudt told Deadline. 'So, it's always fun to play with that. Whether that story is the story is a question we're wrestling with right now. There are all sorts of things to talk about. We're also trying to reflect the world…how many streamers can there be? People getting laid off, that sort of stuff. So we also just want to reflect what's actually happening in the media world. Some people are doing very well, some people are doing less well. It's like the Wild West.' And at the end of season 3, Bradley—now resigned from UBA—and her brother, Hal, turn themselves in to the FBI to account for his assault of a police officer during the January 6th insurrection (and Bradley subsequently withholding evidence). That leaves a big question for the state of the series's leading pair: How will the show handle Alex and Bradley being apart? (Even more than they did this past season?) Stoudt also teased what's to come in a discussion with Deadline in April 2024. 'We blew everything up last year with the biggest bomb we could possibly build,' she explained. 'So, we have to ask ourselves how is the band going to get back together, and what will that look like? We get into the world of DeepFakes and AI and the misinformation in the fog of war that we're seeing now in the Middle East and stuff. We're looking at who can trust. And can you trust what you're seeing? Can you trust yourself? Can you trust your news outlet?' In an interview in July 2025 with People, Aniston hinted at a 'complicated' season. 'The Morning Show is just a beast to film. It is layered, it's complicated, it's emotional, it hits on a lot of topics and current events, so let's just say, it's not Friends,' she joked. Of herself and Witherspoon producing, Aniston said, 'We're involved in every single aspect of the show, on top of just the performance side, which is a big piece of it. But I've got incredible support, and we have such an incredible team.' Yes. On July 8, Aniston shared with her Instagram followers that the cast has officially begun shooting. 'Let @themorningshow season 4 games begin 🥳 Here we come! ❤️👏🏼👏🏼❤️🥂,' she wrote in the caption along with a BTS photo of her, Witherspoon, and Notaro. They wore coordinating denim looks and carried name plates with their characters' names. Aniston also included a picture of the front of the script for episode 401, titled 'My Roman Empire.' Patti Harrison Felt 'Invigorated' Working On ‘Poker Face' Amid So Many Hollywood 'Cash Grabs'

Poker Face With the season finale of Poker Face coming next week to Peacock, Patti Harrison has enjoyed making some quality television. More from Deadline 'Poker Face's Patti Harrison Learns Clea DuVall Suggested Her For Big Season 2 Role After Being 'Mortified' By Pilot Audition 'Poker Face' Season 2 Guest Stars: From Justin Theroux To Jason Ritter 'Love Island USA' Sets Fan Voting Record After Season 7 Villa's Simmering Tensions Finally Boil Over The comedian, who plays Alex in Season 2 of Rian Johnson's mystery-of-the-week series, spoke to Deadline about being part of the rare 'howcatchem' procedural that stands out among a television landscape that mostly 'just feels like cash grabs.' 'I think the show is a love letter in a lot of ways to all sorts of TV shows and movies, and everyone involved, they're all film, TV junkies, and it just really felt invigorating to be like, 'Oh we're telling a story that is moving—'' she explained. 'Everything feels so alive, I guess.' Harrison continued, 'I feel like I've watched some stuff recently that just feels like cash grabs, or it doesn't really matter if the characters have chemistry, it doesn't matter if the story is exciting or whatnot. They're just like, 'Let's put this movie out cause we know people will go see it.' Or 'Let's put this TV show out because it's a franchise, or people will just watch it no matter what.' And it does feel cool to get to work on something where everyone was so excited to talk about the references, and the planning for the shots, and why the camera moves make sense for the story and the characters' emotional world and stuff like that.' Noting in the interview that it was 'my dream to work with Rian Johnson,' Harrison joined Poker Face in the back half of the sophomore season as the quirky new friend of Natasha Lyonne's Charlie Cale, who quickly develops a bond with the human lie detector as Charlie considers putting down roots after months of being on the run from the mafia. In the penultimate 'Day of the Iguana', directed by Ti West, an assassin (Justin Theroux) frames Alex for murdering the groom (Haley Joel Osment) at a wedding she and Charlie are catering. The Lyonne-helmed finale 'The End of the Road', available to stream July 10 on Peacock, sees the duo on the run from the FBI and the mob as they get to the shocking truth behind who placed the hit and framed Alex. Two quarter-finals on today's agenda

Follow live as Real Madrid and Dortmund meet in today's second all-European Club World Cup quarter-final Getty Images Real Madrid are leading Borussia Dortmund 2-0 in the last Club World Cup quarter-final at MetLife Stadium. Gonzalo Garcia scored in the 10th minute for his fourth goal of the tournament, justifying his selection over Kylian Mbappe. And the other Garcia, Fran, added the second goal soon after, finishing nicely from Trent Alexander-Arnold's low cross. This game is a repeat of the 2024 Champions League final with a place in the semi-final against PSG on the line. Join the conversation : live@ : live@ How to watch: DAZN, TNT (U.S.), Channel 5 (UK); highlights will be available on The Athletic You can sign up to DAZN to watch every FIFA Club World Cup game for free. There's a bit of a UEFA Champions League feel to today's Club World Cup action as it is an all-European affair in today's quarter-finals. Up first is a meeting between the European champions and the German champions before our focus turns to this match. 12pm Paris-Saint Germain vs Bayern Munich – Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, Georgia 4pm Real Madrid vs Borussia Dortmund – MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey All times ET Getty Images MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey Capacity : 82,500 : 82,500 Teams: New York Giants, New York Jets This is the place to be for the rest of the Club World Cup as each of the last four matches of the tournament will be played here. Both semifinals and the final will be played in the same stadium that will host the 2026 World Cup final. Javing been to MetLife Stadium multiple times to cover the Copa America last summer, I can understand why the venue has been chosen for back-to-back FIFA tournament finals. It's gigantic. It's the type of stadium that makes one feel tiny in comparison with the colossal concrete structure. Argentina's Copa América semifinal against Canada was a prime example of what MetLife Stadium can sound like for a big international football match. The Argentines took over the ground, chanting and singing throughout the game. And welcome along to The Athletic where we were nearing the championship rounds at the Club World Cup. This game, between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund at MetLife Stadium, is the last of the quarter-final ties and then there will be just three more matches.
