RANAU: Deputy Chief Minister II and Kundasang Assemblyman Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam congratulated all customary heads who documented the practices and customs of the community in the Kundasang area, making it an important reference for current and future generations. 'In Kundasang constituency, most of the mukims now have their own customs books. This is a major achievement in the effort to preserve and document our cultural treasures,' he said when launching the Kundasang Pinausok Mukim Customary book.
Advertisement He expressed appreciation to the village heads who were directly involved in the effort to document the customs used in their respective villages. He said the book is also a guide for all villages in custom matters, including in the granting of sogit and the mediation process so that there is no confusion in future. Regarding the Native Courts, he said there is a proposal to repeal the Native Courts Enactment 1992 and replace it with a new one. However, the tabling in the State Legislative Assembly was not possible this year because there are several matters that still need to be examined by the Ministry of Local Government and Housing. He said all customary-related positions from district head to village head would be maintained if the existing State Government continues to be mandated by the people. 'However, if there is a change of government, it is not impossible that all these positions will be reshuffled or terminated,' he said. Also present were district heads, OKK Dominic Ghanie and OKK Muhasip Roman, native heads, representative native heads of the Paginatan and Karanaan constituencies, village heads, staff of the Kundasang Community Development Leaders Unit (UPPM), Kundasang JKKK Chairman and Mukim Secretary. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Single system for MRSM, SBP to ensure fairer placements, says Zahid

Published on: Tuesday, July 22, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 22, 2025 By: Elill Easwaran, FMT Text Size: Deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said priority will continue to be given to applicants from rural areas and the urban poor. (Bernama pic) Kuala Lumpur: The new single admission system for Mara Junior Science Colleges (MRSM) and fully residential schools (SBP) will ensure fairer student placements, says deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Zahid, who chaired a coordination meeting today among MRSM, SBP, and other specialised schools under the education ministry, said the decision marked a significant milestone in the history of Malaysia's boarding school system. The new system, to be implemented from next year, will involve a single application and one placement offer per student, which Zahid said was part of the government's efforts to create a more structured, focussed, and equitable education system. Zahid said that previously, some students received multiple offers and declined some of them, resulting in unfilled seats and missed opportunities for other deserving students. 'Through this unified system, placements will be more equitable and inclusive, especially for high-achieving students from rural areas and low-income families,' he said at a press conference. 'This will prevent overlapping offers and ensure that each available spot is filled by students who are truly eligible. 'I am confident that this is a step forward in restructuring the ecosystem of our boarding school system, making it more efficient and providing equal opportunities for all Malaysian children.' Zahid said the existing policy, where 60% of intakes consists of students from B40 families, would be maintained. He also said priority would continue to be given to applicants from rural areas and the urban poor, in line with the government's aim to strengthen social mobility through education. Student selection will still be based on the Pentaksiran Kemasukan Sekolah Khusus, using a streamlined online platform shared by Mara and the education ministry. Private school students not listed in the ministry's student database can still apply through the MyMRSM system. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? RM45 million monthly savings since egg subsidy slashed, says minister

Published on: Tuesday, July 22, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 22, 2025 By: Mohamad Fadli, FMT Text Size: Agriculture and food security minister Mohamad Sabu said the supply of chicken eggs is currently stable and that prices remain reasonable. (Bernama pic) Kuala Lumpur: The government is estimated to have saved RM45 million a month following the reduction of egg subsidies which took effect on May 1, said agriculture and food security minister Mohamad Sabu. He told the Dewan Rakyat that the subsidy cut would result in savings of up to RM135 million over a three-month period before the full termination of the subsidy on Aug 1. He was responding to a question from Sheikh Puzi Sheikh Ali (BN-Pekan) about the savings from the reduced subsidy spending and its impact on the egg market and overall cost of living. Mohamad, known as Mat Sabu, said the supply of chicken eggs was stable and that prices remained reasonable. In July alone, egg production is expected to reach 1.75 billion eggs, while domestic consumption is estimated at 1.06 billion, he said. 'This indicates a surplus of 0.69 billion eggs, some of which will be exported,' he added. Mohamad said that to ensure continued stability in egg supply and pricing, his ministry, together with the domestic trade and cost of living ministry, would closely monitor the situation. He added that the savings from the reduced subsidy spending would allow the government to redirect funds towards initiatives and programmes that provide direct benefits for the people. In April, the agriculture and food security ministry announced its decision to end the subsidy after industry players committed to ensuring a stable and sufficient egg supply, following the stabilisation of production costs. In June 2024, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the government had decided to reduce the retail price of grade A, B and C eggs nationwide by three sen. This subsidy scheme involved an expenditure of RM100 million. The government initially planned to float egg prices in July 2023, but postponed the move due to concerns about potential price increases and the impact on consumers. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
