Soccer-Milner to honour former teammate Jota with jersey number switch
Jota and his brother Andre Silva were killed in early July when their Lamborghini veered off the road and burst into flames in northwestern Spain.
The Portuguese forward had worn the number 20 during his time at Liverpool, where he and Milner played together for three seasons before the veteran midfielder's move to Brighton in 2023.
"Once I heard Carlos (Baleba) was looking to change his number and 20 was available, I wanted to do it as a mark of respect and obviously pay tribute to Diogo Jota," Milner said.
"(He was) an amazing player I was fortunate to play with and a great friend as well. So it'd be a great honour to wear his number in the Premier League."
Liverpool are permanently retiring the number 20 after consultation with the player's wife Rute and family. The squad number will not be used at any level, including the women's team and academy.
The 39-year-old Milner recently agreed a one-year contract extension with Brighton and is chasing Premier League history of his own.
With 638 Premier League appearances already to his name, he sits within striking distance of Gareth Barry's all-time record of 653 games.

PORTHCAWL: Heading into the week, foreign players had taken each of the previous eight LPGA Tour major championships, including three from Japan. At the AIG Women's Open yesterday, rookie Miyu Yamashita continued the trend. A day after celebrating her 24th birthday, Yamashita carded a 2-under-par 70 at Royal Porthcawl in Wales to finish at 11-under 277 for the tournament to record her first victory on tour and become the sixth-ever major champion from Japan — and the fourth in two years. "To win such a historic tournament in front of all these amazing fans is such an incredible feeling," Yamashita said after the round, "and to have my family around me to have so much support from everyone here is just amazing. To be part of such a moment in history is something very, very special." The Osaka native finished two shots clear of Japan's Minami Katsu and England's Charley Hull, who both carded 69s. Yamashita became the second player this season to make a major championship her first win and joined Hinako Shibuno (2019) to win the AIG Women's Open. "Being my first win as well is something that's very special," Yamashita said, "and to celebrate with everyone is just an amazing feeling." Yamashita has certainly made the most of her first season on tour. In addition to Sunday's victory, she has made 13 other cuts in 15 starts with six top-10 finishes, including two in major championships. With 840 points, Yamashita sits 68 back of fellow countrywoman Rio Takeda for the LPGA's Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year award. The leader since Friday, Yamashita was bogey-free until the par-4 17th. Fortunately, she already enjoyed some cushion from Hull. After closing to within a shot with a 20-foot birdie putt on the 14th, Hull found a pot bunker off the tee at 16 en route to a bogey. She carded another on the 17th that set the stage for Yamashita, whose made par on the 18th to secure the win. "It was a bit unfortunate, but I felt like I was very much in control of my game today," Hull said. "I don't feel like I mis-hit any shots out there. I hit it pretty pure today." Hull added that she was unsure if she was going to even make the cut this week, noting that she was not hitting the ball well — especially after collapsing several times during July's Evian Championship. She conceded that she "still wasn't feeling well" until Sunday leading up to the AIG Women's Open. "So I think I done pretty well," Hull said, "and considering my mindset coming into it, I'm pretty proud of myself." Takeda, who carded a 1-under 71 on Sunday to finish at 7 under for the tournament, shared fourth place with South Korea's A Lim Kim, who shot a 73. Rugby-Loose forward Parker earns All Blacks call-up for Rugby Championship
(Reuters) -Loose forward Simon Parker earned his first call-up to the All Blacks squad on Monday, while Tamaiti Williams and Wallace Sititi returned to the fold for the Rugby Championship after missing the July series against France because of injury. Parker was the only uncapped player selected by coach Scott Robertson in the 36-man squad, although rookie prop Tevita Mafileo, scrumhalf Kyle Preston and utility back Leroy Carter were named as injury cover for the trip to Argentina. "Simon Parker had an impressive Super Rugby season with the Chiefs and brings a valuable skill set and physicality that we are looking forward to working with," Robertson said in a news release. "He has the ability to play blindside or number eight and has gained experience in a number of New Zealand representative teams, so we believe he is ready for the step up." Bruno Fernandes stars as Man United draw Everton to win Premier League Summer Series
WASHINGTON, Aug 4 — Bruno Fernandes scored one goal and set up another as Manchester United drew Everton 2-2 on yesterday to capture the Premier League Summer Series title. The Red Devils earned a final point in Atlanta to top the table with seven in the pre-season friendly tournament, having previously beaten West Ham 2-1 and Bournemouth 4-1 in the round-robin US tour. 'It's improving,' Fernandes told Sky Sports after the match. 'I think the club is doing the best that they can. 'We needed more competition for the players that were here. We needed more quality to get everyone to step up a little bit more, to have more to do to get into the first 11. I think that's what the club is trying to do, the manager, and hopefully we can get one or two players more to help with that.' Manchester United finished last season 15th in the Premier League, their worst showing since relegation in 1973-74, managing only 11 wins and nine drawn from 38 matches.
