Dukes of Hazzard star Rick Hurst dies 'unexpectedly' aged 79

Metro27-06-2025
Rick Hurst has died 'unexpectedly' aged 79.
The Dukes of Hazzard actor, who is best known for his role as Deputy Cletus Hogg on the iconic TV show, passed away on Thursday in Los Angeles just days before he was scheduled for a public appearance.
As reported by TMZ, Hurst's first wife Candance Kaniecki told the outlet he died unexpectedly on Thursday, while his cause of death is unclear.
Before his death, the actor was schedule to appear at the Dukes of Hazzard-themed museum and store at Cooter's Place in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
On Thursday morning, the museum made a since-deleted post noting that the event needed to be rescheduled due to unforeseen circumstances.
Now, the Nashville-based Cooter's Place branch has shared tributes on Facebook in honour of Hurst.
'Our hearts are broken!!! You will be missed,' a first post reads alongside a picture of the actor in character as Deputy Hogg.
Cooter's Place owner Ben Jones – who played Cooter Davenport on the show and also runs the Dukes of Hazzard Museum, and founded annual fan event Dukesfest – shared his own lengthier post in memory of his late friend.
'It doesn't seem right that Rick Hurst passed away this afternoon. When something so unexpected happens, it is 'harder to process', as the current expression goes,' he wrote.
'I have known Rick for over 45 years and there wasn't a minute of that time that he didn't leave me smiling or laughing.
'Sure he was a professional comedian, but mostly he just had a heart as big as Texas. He was a fine actor, a splendid comic, and a wonderfully supportive colleague.'
Ben said Hurst will 'continue to make us laugh' when people watch back his shows and movies, and that he will missed be everyone at the venue.
'We have always thought of our Cooter's friends as 'Hazzard Nation',' he continued.
'Well, Hazzard Nation is sure going to miss Rick Hurst down here around 'Cooters', but his presence will always be near us. Rest in Peace, old friend!'
In 1979, Hurst originally started on Dukes of Hazzard in a recurring role, which his deputy character bumped up to main cast while Sonny Shroyer (Deputy Enos Strate) was focused on shortlived spinoff Enos.
He later appeared in the likes of Amanda's – a US remake of Fawlty Towers – as well as Sanford And Son, The Doris Day Show, M*A*S*H and Kojak. More Trending
Other credits included iconic shows Little House On The Prairie, The Six Million Dollar Man and Murder, She Wrote.
On the big screen, he appeared in Burt Reynolds' W.W. And The Dixie Dancekings in 1975, as well as The Cat From Outer Space, and 1984 classic The Karate Kid and its first two sequels.
He is survived by his wife Candance and son Ryan Hurst, who followed in his father's footsteps with roles in Bates Motel, The Walking Dead, Sons of Anarchy and more.

Adam Lambert's heartbreak as he splits from boyfriend Oliver Gliese after four-year romance

Adam Lambert has reportedly amicably ended his relationship with boyfriend Oliver Gliese after four years of dating. At 43, the Grammy nominee is 14 years older than the Twitch streamer, and they 'broke up within the last month' and it's 'drama free' - according to TMZ. However, the ex-couple haven't posted an Instagram snap featuring one another since June 2024. Earlier this month, Adam celebrated LGBTQIA+ Pride month in New York City with his 'ride or dies' - a term of endearment he used to reserve for Oliver. There are reports that Lambert and Gliese began dating as far back as 2020, but they didn't go Instagram official until May 2021 and in March 2024 he shared a snap captioned: 'Love is the answer.' In 2023, the Cabaret thespian publicly defended the former Global Fashion Agenda partnerships manager after he received a barrage of homophobic comments. 'He is beautiful and brave and daring. One of the many things I love about him!' Adam - who boasts 11.5M social media followers - wrote via Instastory. 'We are very happy together, and if the haters don't like it, we don't really give a f***. Grow up and challenge yourself to explore tolerance.' Oliver - whose drag persona is Valkyrie - originally hails from Denmark where he graduated from Copenhagen Business School. News of Lambert's newly-single status came the day after TMZ reported he sold his four-bedroom Hollywood Hills estate for $6.2M - $300K less than what he paid for the three-story home in 2018. The Indiana-born, Cali-raised belter was previously romantically linked to retired figure skater Johnny Weir in 2010, but neither confirmed the rumor. Adam made history in 2012 as the first openly gay male artist to top the US Billboard 200 chart, but he was outed (with a leaked Burning Man photo) three years earlier while competing on the eighth season of American Idol. Kris Allen went on to win the formerly Fox singing competition over Lambert amid controversy over his forcible outing and the voting process, but producers 'stood by the outcome' of the results. The RuPaul's Drag Race guest judge will next use his three-octave pipes to portray Judas Iscariot opposite Cynthia Erivo's Jesus in director Sergio Trujillo's production of Jesus Christ Superstar at the Hollywood Bowl in LA from August 1-3. On July 14, Josh Gad - who plays Herod - shared an Instagram snap of himself rehearsing with Adam and Phillipa Soo, who plays Mary Magdalene in Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's 1971 musical. There are reports that Lambert and Gliese began dating as far back as 2020, but they didn't go Instagram official until May 2021 and in March 2024 he shared a snap captioned: 'Love is the answer' The Indiana-born, Cali-raised belter will next portray Judas Iscariot opposite Cynthia Erivo's (M, pictured June 8) Jesus in director Sergio Trujillo's production of Jesus Christ Superstar at the Hollywood Bowl in LA from August 1-3 Adam told Variety's Stagecraft podcast on Tuesday: '[Judas] is questioning everything. He's critical. He's analytical. He's the one person that'll argue with Jesus. And I think part of it is that Judas reflects my shadow self. If I'm being honest with myself or anybody else about what my faults are, I can see those same faults in Judas' 'I was excited to do something new — which was kind of old for me, but new again, you know?' Lambert told Variety 's Stagecraft podcast on Tuesday. '[Judas] is questioning everything. He's critical. He's analytical. He's the one person that'll argue with Jesus. And I think part of it is that Judas reflects my shadow self. If I'm being honest with myself or anybody else about what my faults are, I can see those same faults in Judas. 'Me on a bad day, I have a tendency to disagree or to rebel or to not go with the status quo. I'm very much like, "Well, everyone else is doing that. I don't like it!"' The Queen + Adam Lambert frontman also teased that he's penning an original musical: 'It's definitely got a rock 'n' roll spirit. It takes place in the 1970s in New York. It's glam. And that's kind of all I can say.' Adam - who gets 2.5M monthly listeners on Spotify - released an EP called Afters in 2024, and he's reportedly sold over 3M records worldwide.

Erik Menendez hospitalised with 'serious' condition before hearing for release

Erik Menendez has reportedly been diagnosed with a 'serious' health condition and hospitalised just weeks before a parole hearing he and his brother have long awaited. The 54-year-old – who along with his brother Lyle, 57, has spent decades in prison for murdering their parents in 1989 – is so ill that his lawyer is urging California's governor to release him right away. 'It's a serious condition,' Mark Geragos told TMZ. 'I just think he should be parole furloughed, I think is the proper term, and he could be medically furloughed in advance of the hearing so that he can work with the parole attorney and get up to speed and be ready and do it and give it his best shot. In an update on Tuesday afternoon, TMZ reported that Erik is being treated for kidney stones. Geragos said his client's condition is so serious that Governor Gavin Newsom should release him before the parole hearing scheduled for August 21 and 22. Though Erik is receiving medical treatment in prison, he presumably would benefit from seeing a specialist outside the confines of the Richard J Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego. The siblings were sentenced to life in prison without parole for shooting dead their parents, José and Kitty Menendez, inside their Beverly Hills home. Erik and Lyle, then 18 and 21 years old, claimed that their father, who was RCA Records' chief operating officer, sexually abused them and that their former pageant queen mum turned a blind eye to that. The brothers have argued that their dad threatened to kill them if they told anyone, and that they acted in self-defence. But prosecutors said the brothers murdered their parents out of greed and pointed to their lavish spending after the killings. On May 13, the brothers were resentenced to 50 years to life in prison, which made them eligible for parole. The final decision on if the Menendez brothers are suitable for parole lies with Newsom. On Sunday, the Democratic governor spoke about the case with Ryan Murphy, who created the Netflix series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. More Trending The governor said he has not watched the Netflix show in order to avoid it influencing his decision on whether the brothers should be freed. 'I'm going to see if I made the right decision,' Newsom said with a laugh. 'Like, 'Jesus, I should've watched this before.'' Newsom could also seek to grant the brothers clemency, but has said he will hold off until their last parole board hearing to make that decision. The artists going from queer cabaret to the Venice Biennale

They will be working with Mount Stuart House, the neo-gothic mansion house on the Isle of Bute, on a show inspired by queer histories, Scottish heritage and the Filipino roots of Bugarin. Read more: Their project, which will feature elements of performance and moving image, was chosen to represent Scotland following an open call for proposals earlier this year. It is expected to to explore 'complex emotional legacies' of shame, pride and celebration through the sound and costumes of a parade. Artists Angel John Castle and Davide Bugarin with Mount Stuart Trust curator Morven Gregor. (Image: Neil Hanna) The pair have pledged to "trouble easy narratives on the contested ground of identity today" in a show that will transform a yet-to-be announced Venice venue with "spatial and drag-inflected interventions." Bugarin and Castle have both performed as their drag alter egos 'Hairy Teddy Bear' and 'Pollyfilla' at queer cabaret nights staged under the banner of Pollyanna, an arts company created by Castle in 2015. More than 250 artists have since performed across 75 shows, many of which were staged at the Paradise Palms bar in Edinburgh. The work of Bugarin and Castle, which has combined elements of cabaret, theatre and film, has previously explored the histories of performance, queerness, colonisation and gentrification. They have been showcased recently at the Fruitmarket and City Art Centre in [[Edinburgh]], the Tate Modern in London, the Microscope Gallery in New York, the Kriittinen Gallery in Finland and the Pineapple Lab, in Manila, in the Philippines. Mount Stuart House, the ancestral home of the Crichton-Stuart family, dates back to the late 19th century and is home to one of Britain's biggest private art collections. The house was opened to the public for the first time in 1995 and has been playing host to annual visual art exhibitions since 2001. Artists who have previously worked with the Mount Stuart Trust, which manages the mansion house and its cultural programme, include Kate Whiteford, Thomas Joshua Cooper, Christine Borland, Langlands & Bell, Anya Gallaccio, Nathan Coley, Lee Mingwei, Lucy Skaer, Kate Davis, Lorna Macintyre, Steven Claydon and Whitney McVeigh. Scotland has not been represented at the Venice Biennale since 2022, when Glasgow-based artist Alberta Whittle attracted more than 35,000 visitors to her solo show. Scotland's future participation in the event, which dates back to 2003, was put under review two years ago amid concerns over how it could be funded in future. However it was announced earlier this year that Scotland would have an official presence at the 2026 event after the review found 'overwhelming support' for it to continue. Creative Scotland, British Council and the National Galleries Scotland are sharing the £470,000 costs involved in making Bugarin and Castle's show, and showing it in Venice between May and November next year. However it is hoped further funding can be secured to allow the show to tour around Scotland following a planned run at Mount Stuart House in 2027. Morven Gregor, curator at the Mount Stuart Trust, said: 'We are excited to curate the work of Bugarin and Castle, extending our shared commitment through the opportunities presented by the Scotland and Venice project to bring this ambitious work of performance and moving image to life and to reach our audiences on the west coast of Scotland and internationally. 'We look forward to celebrating the return of Scotland to Venice with our communities across Scotland and beyond, and, as ever, recognise the positive impact of working in collaboration with key partners in the cultural sector.' Bugarin and Castle said: 'We first met performing in the mess and noise of queer cabaret in Edinburgh. 'A decade later, that spirit still drives our practice. We're thrilled to show new work together in Venice, transforming the venue with spatial and drag-inflected interventions that confront questions of gendered performance and colonial sound control, rooted in our lived experience. 'We aim to trouble easy narratives on the contested ground of identity today.' Emma Nicolson, head of visual arts at Creative Scotland, said: 'We are thrilled to support the Mount Stuart Trust, and Bugarin and Castle, as they lead Scotland's return to Venice with a commission that speaks powerfully to the rich and diverse contemporary art practice that we have in Scotland. 'This project is bold, visually compelling and emotionally layered and stands as a testament to the varied and ambitious artistic voices in Scotland, rooted in place, conceptually bold, and internationally relevant. 'We are excited to see how this work will evolve in Venice and ripple back across communities and venues throughout Scotland and beyond.'
