ATS busts fake passport racket: Afghan national held in Jabalpur for living illegally for over 10 years; 2 accomplices detained
Two local accomplices have also been taken into custody in connection with the racket.
The suspect, identified as Sohbat Khan, son of Badruddin Khan, had been residing in Jabalpur's Chhoti Omti area. Police said he had earlier married and divorced a local woman. Investigations revealed he had been preparing forged property documents in West Bengal and Chhattisgarh to fraudulently obtain an Indian passport in 2020.
According to ATS officials, around 20 fake passports have been traced so far, including those of two West Bengal residents identified as Akbar and Iqbal, suspected to have terror links. Sohbat also procured a driving licence from Jabalpur in 2015 using forged documents.
The other two arrested have been identified as Dinesh Garg (40), a resident of Vijay Nagar, and Mahendra Kumar Sukhad (45), a resident of Katanga. Dinesh is employed as a forest guard with the Forest Department and has been working with the Municipal Corporation's election cell for the past two years.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the gang changed passport addresses online, replacing West Bengal details with local addresses. Officials suspect payments of nearly Rs 10 lakh were made to various local agencies, including police and postal staff, to facilitate the issuance of forged passports.
The ATS is questioning the trio to identify others involved in the network, including those who assisted in document forgery and passport issuance. Further probe is underway.

ED arrests Odisha-based firm's MD
Bhubaneswar: Following day-long multi-city searches, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested the Managing Director (MD) of an Odisha-based company in connection with a fake bank guarantee scam, an official said on Saturday. Partha Sarathi Biswal, Managing Director of M/s Biswal Tradelink Private Limited (BTPL), was arrested on Friday after searches in Bhubaneswar and Kolkata at locations linked to the Odisha-based company, said an official statement. After the arrest, Biswal was sent to ED custody. As per the ED, the Central agency recorded an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) and initiated investigation into the fake bank guarantee scam on the basis of a case registered by Delhi's Economic Offences Wing (EOW), on November 11, 2024. The case was registered against BTPL, its directors and others, for providing fake bank guarantee, which was submitted to Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI). Investigation by the ED revealed that BTPL fraudulently arranged and submitted fake bank guarantees of Rs 68.2 crore along with forged SBI endorsements and fabricated confirmations for an SECI tender. For providing this bank guarantee, Rs 5.40 crore was received by BTPL from Reliance Power, the ED statement said. Evidence confirms the use of fake documents in the name of certain banks and fake email IDs in the name of SBI, the probe agency said. The probe reveals BTPL, a small company incorporated in 2019, maintained multiple undisclosed bank accounts and carried out transactions disproportionate to its declared turnover. 'Many violations of the Companies Act are found. No statutory records are found at registered address -- such as books of accounts, shareholders' registers. Dummy directors are found to be used just to sign the documents,' the ED statement said. At least seven undisclosed bank accounts of the company were found and proceeds of crime of crores of rupees have been traced to these accounts. Sources said the Central agency, during investigations, found that the company, its directors and associates were engaged in the issuance of fake bank guarantees against a commission of 8 per cent.

A look at Elephant Mahadevi's (Madhuri) journey: 2000s: The Swasthishri Sanstha (Math) got possession of an elephant. It was used by them for auctioning pooja, renting it out for Muharram processions and other processions, street begging and entertainment purposes. December 2017: The elephant was kept chained. Controlled by using banned metal ankush weapon. It was not kept properly. Due to intense depression, it killed the head priest of the Math. 2018: Local politican Raju Shetti wrote a complaint asking the elephant to be taken away. April 7, 2018: The trustee of the Sanstha wrote to the Chief Conservator of Forests, Kolhapur, expressing willingness to hand over the elephant to the Forest Department. This letter showed the Sanstha's own recognition of its inability to continue proper care and its intention to relinquish custody to the appropriate authorities. The Telangana Forest Department registered Wildlife Offence POR No. 12-07/2022-23 under Sections 48A and 54 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 against B. Ismail for unlawful use of the elephant during a religious event. Post-January 2023: The offence was compounded upon payment of Rs 25,000. The custody of the elephant was handed over to one Shinde of Kolhapur. August 3, 2023: A letter from Police Inspector, Shirol (Kolhapur) prompted veterinary inspection. August 12, 2023: Three government veterinary doctors inspected the elephant and found signs of extreme physical and psychological distress including ulcerated wounds, cracked nails, swaying behaviour, and solitary confinement. October 31, 2023: The High Powered Committee (HPC) received the first complaint from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) concerning Elephant Mahadevi. The complaint showed unauthorised transport (13 times) between Maharashtra and Telangana between 2012 and 2023 without forest department permits. It enclosed extensive photographic and factual documentation including signs of poor treatment, unauthorised usage in religious processions, and lack of welfare. It was recorded that in 2017, the elephant had fatally injured the chief priest of the Math. March 22, 2024: PETA submitted a second complaint to HPC alleging continued unauthorised use of the elephant in processions including Muharram events. June 12, 2024: The HPC sub-committee visited the Math premises. Although cultural sentiments were noted, the Committee granted the Math three months to rectify welfare conditions. June 20, 2024: The first follow-up inspection reported unresolved foot rot, untreated wounds, and continued psychological stress. Recommendations for urgent specialised care were reiterated. November 25, 2024: The second follow-up inspection showed minimal and cosmetic improvements. Serious violations and suffering persisted. December 27, 2024: The HPC passed a detailed final order directing the transfer of the elephant to RKTEWT (Vantara), citing expert evidence, medical reports, and lack of compliance by the Math. June 3, 2025: The HPC reaffirmed its decision after hearing the Sanstha and reviewing its submissions. The elephant's welfare was prioritised over ritualistic usage. July 16, 2025: The Bombay High Court dismissed Writ Petition No. 4965 of 2025 filed by the Sanstha. The Court upheld the HPC's findings and ordered transfer within two weeks. July 28, 2025: The Supreme Court of India upheld the Bombay High Court's judgment, directed that the transfer be completed within two weeks, and listed the matter for compliance on August 11, 2025. Late July 2025: The authorities concerned and RKTEWT complied with the judicial directions. The elephant was transferred to Vantara under court supervision. Pahalgam attack: Agencies identify terrorists' handler in Pakistan, trace their route from Baisaran to Dachigam
Following the 'Operation Mahadev' last week, Indian security agencies have identified the handler of three terrorists as Pakistan-based Sajid Saifullah Jatt of Lashkar-e-Taiba. (Photo: Dar Yasin/AP) Following the 'Operation Mahadev' last week, Indian security agencies have identified the handler of terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack and traced the route that those terrorists took, according to a report. On July 28, the Indian Army said it killed three terrorists in the Dachigam area of Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar. Those were later said to be involved in attack in J&K's Pahalgam's Baisaran meadow in which they killed 26 people. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The CNN-News 18 has reported that Indian agencies have now identified Sajid Saifullah Jatt, the south Kashmir operations chief of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), as the key handler based in Lahore, Pakistan. The report said that the agencies have also confirmed the terrorists' link to Pakistan and LeT through funeral prayers of those killed in Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (POJK), which were coordinated by Rizwan Anees of LeT. The agencies believe that the evidence leaves no doubt that the three persons killed in Dachigam, who they have identified as Suleman Shah (alias Faizal Jatt), Abu Hamza (alias 'Afghan"), and Yasir (alias 'Jibran") were Pakistani nationals and part of the LeT. How agencies confirmed link to Pakistan The evidence found from three terrorists in Dachigam contains voter ID cards and a NADRA card, which are the Pakistani equivalent of Aadhaar card, according to CNN-News 18. The agencies have found that these cards have been tied to electoral rolls in Lahore and Gujranwala, confirming the Pakistani identities of those killed in Dachigam, according to the report. The agencies have flagged the presence of Pakistan-made chocolate as further proof of Pakistani roots of terrorists. As for the route they took, the agencies have assessed that they crossed into India near Gurez and were later sheltered in a seasonal hut near Pahalgam by two Kashmiri men —Parvaiz and Bashir Ahmad Jothar— who later confessed to aiding them, the report said. GPS data from a Garmin device recovered from one of them and call logs from a Huawei satellite phone established their movements and linkages to operational control in Pakistan, the report said.
