Lawrence Shankland was not ready to bring Hearts career to an end
After becoming a free agent this summer and exploring his options, however, Shankland has been persuaded by recently-installed manager Derek McInnes to accept an offer to become the club's highest-paid player.
The Jambos announced on Thursday afternoon that he has agreed a deal until 2028, bringing to an end a long-running contract saga.

'I had a couple of weeks at the end of the season on holiday and to get married, and then after that, I gave it a month to think about things and weigh up options,' Shankland said in an official club interview at their training base in Spain.
'I had a couple that popped up, but the family side of things just wasn't right for me. And in the meantime, I'd been speaking to the manager about coming back here. I'd always left the door open. I couldn't seem to close the door behind me, and I think that gave me an indication of where my head might be at.
'After speaking to the family and where they want to be, especially my four-year-old Eva, who's in love with Jock the Jambo (Hearts' mascot), it was back here. I'm happy with my decision and the family are happy as well.'
In his first campaign at the club Shankland became the first Hearts player in 31 years to score more than 20 goals in a season and then netted 31 goals in 2023-24 to earn himself every Scottish Premiership Player of the Year award available and secure a place in the Scotland squad for Euro 2024.
The former Ayr and Dundee United forward's most recent campaign was more of a struggle in front of goal, although he did notch five times in his final five appearances to leave supporters clinging to the hope that he might decide to remain at Tynecastle.
After being appointed in mid-May, McInnes made it a priority to retain Shankland and the forward was grateful to his new manager for allowing him time to make up his mind.
'As long as I was honest in my situation, I think both sides were happy to kind of see how things went,' said Shankland.
'I was always keen to keep that door open for myself, and it was important for me that the manager was happy to do that for me as well. When he came in the door, my contract was coming to an end and he understood where I was at as well, so that was important. And the honesty between us kind of worked out in the end.'
The retention of their most prolific forward of the 21st century represents a significant coup for Hearts at a time when they are embarking on an exciting new era in partnership with Jamestown Analytics and with Brighton owner Tony Bloom on board as a minority investor.
'Lawrence is a really popular boy, but he's still got so much to do here,' said McInnes. 'We want to be lifting silverware. We want to be going into group stages in Europe and we want to have a consistent thing going here. Having Lawrence in the building gives us a better chance of achieving all that.'

His team have scored 12 goals in three wins against lower-league opponents, conceding just one in the process. There are plenty positives but McInnes is still demanding higher standards from his players. Words were exchanged in the away dressing room at Forthbank on Saturday night, despite Hearts cruising to a 4-0 victory over League Two Stirling Albion. Defender Craig Halkett, forward Claudio Braga and debutant winger Alexandros Kyziridis scored to put the visitors 3-0 ahead before half-time. Halkett added a fourth in the second half, but McInnes wasn't entirely happy at full-time. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'The manager has been on at us. We won 4-0 and going into the changing room you'd think it would be buzzing, but it wasn't,' admitted Halkett. 'We had words because we know it wasn't good enough in certain points of the game and it can get better. We were slack, forcing passes and not doing things quick enough - and even though he told us that, we knew it ourselves. 'That's good, it's refreshing because you don't want someone who is going to tell you that you're brilliant all the time. Everyone knows the standards have to be high in this team. You have to take it on board and try to get better. It's not unusual, even if he hadn't said anything and just left it to the boys, we would have said that among ourselves. It's a collective from everyone demanding more from each other. 'The manager is big on standards. Go back to before he even came in for pre-season when he spoke to people on the phone, he made it clear the standards were not there last season. It wasn't good enough so everyone knew before we came back we all had to lift it. That was the reason Hearts were in that position, so right from the first day it's all been about standards and getting this club back to where it should be.' Mindful of Hearts' seventh-place finish last season before he was lured to Edinburgh from Kilmarnock, McInnes wants to build real momentum ahead of this year's Premiership kick-off against Aberdeen in two weeks' time. His demand for more does not mean victories over Dunfermline Athletic, Hamilton Academical and Stirling have not been positive. Indeed, victory over Dumbarton on Wednesday should secure Hearts a seeding place for the Premier Sports Cup knockout rounds. We were disappointed to lose that one to Dunfermline but it's been a good start, although I think we can still get better. Hearts goals ahead of the Scottish Premiership kick-off against Aberdeen 'I feel we have made progress from game to game and that's something the manager has been talking about. He's stressed how nobody can be perfect this early in the season, but also stressing these games are not pre-season friendlies for us. We want to win them and thankfully we're doing that. Everyone knows we can get better, I think we are getting better, but there's more to come. 'A lot of people are getting a lot of minutes in these games and the manager has told everyone when they get their chance that you have to do everything you can to show it's your position. You can see when we play that everyone is giving their all and maybe people are trying too hard at times. We have a big squad and everyone has to fight for the jerseys.' Halkett's header appeared to cross the goal line for Hearts' fourth goal, although his defensive colleague Stuart Findlay arrived to make sure. 'They told me after the game that the linesman thought it was over the line so it was my goal,' smiled Halkett. 'Two in a game, which is great, but as a defender the clean sheet means just as much. Arne Engels in Celtic reminded as Rodgers eyes up transfers
Coasting to a 4-0 victory over Premier League opposition, regardless of what stage of pre-season it comes, is an indication of a squad brimming with ability and confidence in equal measure. Last season's record-breaking £11million signing Arne Engels recognises recruitment is a normal part of football but insists he and his teammates have shown how good they are already before any further additions. Usually doing their business late in a window, the Scottish champions have already added six to date. Kieran Tierney and Hayato Inamura bolster the backline while Benjamin Nygren, Shin Yamada and Callum Osmand provide options middle to front. Ross Doohan returns to the club as a third-choice goalkeeper. With Tierney and Nygren the two likely to improve the starting XI immediately, Rodgers wants more. But Engels points out the manager already has a very strong squad at his disposal. "We have a really good squad," the Belgian midfielder insisted. "And there will be always rumours about players coming in, going. It's up to us to keep this all inside and to work on the players that are here. You see that today also, that we have a lot of quality already. 'We'll see what's going in and going out, we never know, but the squad that is now here is fantastic. 'Also, you see today everybody is doing well, is adapting to the system and to the style of play and to also the fitness that we ask from each other. The 21-year-old was an investment for the club when he came in from Augsburg last summer and is already being linked with moves away. Clubs in Italy are thought to be taking a look but he is taking no heed. His focus remains purely on the task at hand - aiming to win trophies and perform in the Champions League. "I'm trying to do my best here and to get ready for the new season," he said. 'There will always be rumours and it's up to me to just show on the field what I'm up to. 'I'm here at Celtic and I really want to do great for this club and to reach a lot of things, so I'm not really thinking about something else." Nygren, while he can also operate wide, comes in to add to a midfield already packed with experience and class - Callum McGregor, Paulo Bernardo, Reo Hatate, Luke McCowan and Engels fighting for the three spots. Therefore, even if the latter does stay put he will be far from guaranteed first team football unless he is at the very top of his game. He said: "It's always nice to get a lot of quality players in and it's up to us then to show ourselves to the manager and to everybody else in the stadium and outside. One player Engels would be happy to go to great lengths to see sticking around is Daizen Maeda. The Japanese forward scooped player of the year awards and topped Celtic's scoring charts. The talented midfielder wouldn't be opposed to locking his teammate in a basement until September 1st. "Hopefully," he says when that tongue-in-cheek suggestion is put to him. "He's an amazing player and also really good for us and in the dressing room too. 'He's a lovely guy, so hopefully he will stay. We never know what is going on. He would be fantastic for us next year and like today also. 'He's just an amazing person that is really helping us in every kind of aspect of the game." A motivation of Engels' when quitting the Bundesliga for Scotland a year ago would have playing in the Champions League. A run to the knockout stages and then a ding-dong battle with Bayern Munich will have whetted the appetite. But so did the win over a Champions League-level side in Newcastle. "One hundred percent," he admits. "That's a big goal of ours, to reach the Champions League. In a few weeks, there is a really big game, big games coming up. 'It's up to us to now get physically really ready for that, and I'm sure we will do really great in those two games. "We just want to first get into the Champions League and then we will see how it goes there. 'But we set a really big standard for ourselves in the Champions League and that's also something that we can reach because we have a really good squad. 'It's not that easy that everybody is saying you need to reach the same thing or you need to reach further because we did really great. But it's up to us to show like today that we are a really good squad and that we can cause a lot of teams real pain."
