This is the best hair straightener I've ever used – it's secretly on sale now

Graziadaily09-07-2025
As a kid who grew up in the nineties, I still remember the day our household upgraded from straightening our hair with an iron (yes, really) to using a ghd. It was the turn of the millennia and my cooler, older sister presented us with an all-black, gold plated hair tool that was about to change our hair game for good. A lot has changed since the brand launched its revolutionary Korean-inspired tool to market 24 years ago, and while the trailblazing ghd Original Hair Straightener is still available to buy today (testament to its brilliance), the pioneering haircare brand has widened its portfolio of straighteners to include new-gen stylers and my personal favourite is the ghd Platinum+ Hair Straightener, which is now just £144.39 (was £239) in the Amazon Prime Day sale.
As one of the biggest shopping events of the year, there are a number of stellar beauty deals up for grab. If you are unsure of where to make a worthy investment, I'm here to remind you that the ghd Platinum+ Hair Straightener is a smart choice. On offer with a 40% off discount, making a play for this leading industry pacemaker isn't just easy on your pocket, but on your hair, too.
Sameeha Shaikh, beauty writer, using the ghd Platinum+ Hair Straightener
ghd defines this particular innovation as its 'smart hair straightener'. Smart how exactly? It is built with an ultra-zone™ that features predictive technology, which cleverly recognises the thickness of your hair and the speed at which you are styling in order to deliver the optimum temperature of 185°C (AKA ghd's research-backed sweet spot). It also measures temperatures 250 times per second byway of infinity sensors embedded in the plates to adjust the heat and power according to your hair needs. The result is 70% stronger hair, 75% more shine, and 2x more colour protection, according to the brand's survey results.
Sameeha Shaikh, beauty writer, says: 'I am a real ghd stan. I was only seven when the brand launched and yet when the ghd Original Hair Straightener made its way into our home, I was acutely aware of the fact that it was a prized possession that we were lucky to have. Now 31, I still reach for the brand's bestsellers and when I want a super sleek straight look I reach for this like second nature. It instantly takes my hair from fluffy and wavy to smooth in one quick pass and I'm usually done and dusted within 10 minutes, not bad considering I have ultra long, thick lengths. But it's the versatility of the tool I love most, if I want to switch things up, the rounded barrel (another notable upgrade from the OG straightener) makes it very easy to create glossy curls and waves. There is good reason why ghd has owned the hair straightener market for two decades and this tool is the proof.' 1.

Price: £144.39 (was £239)
Now available with a 40% discount, if you are looking for a worthy investment amid the Amazon Prime Day sales, this straightener should be at the stop of your list. Defined at the haircare pioneering brand's most 'smart hair straightener', it controls power and temperature throughout every styling session to ensure your specific hair needs are met. If glossy, smooth, healthy locks are your MO, look no further.

Remington's £25 hair straighteners beauty lovers say are 'better than GHD'

Hair styling devices can be expensive, with some high-end all-in-one styling tools costing upwards of £500. However, shoppers on a budget and looking to upgrade their hair-styling game can invest in a new tool without spending hundreds of pounds, thanks to an Amazon timed deal. Remington's Shine Therapy Hair Straightener is on sale for £24.99, down from its usual price of £27.26. The affordable hair tool has more than 32,000 customer reviews, with some beauty buyers comparing its performance and finish to GHD straighteners (RRP £139). They have nine heat settings, ranging from 150°C to 230°C. The ceramic-coated plates are infused with Moroccan Argan Oil and Vitamin E for a sleek and smooth finish. The straighteners also promise a fast heat-up time of 15 seconds and automatically shut off after one hour. The Shine Therapy Hair Straightener is also available in a wider plate option, these are ideal for people with longer or thicker hair. Usually £79.99, they are also on sale at Amazon for £37.88. Alternatively, now is a good time to buy a pair of GHD straighteners, as the Original tool is on sale on the brand's website. For a limited time only, the black version of the tool has been reduced to £124. The cult classic hair styling tool promises salon-grade locks at home. Over at Boots, this BaByliss Smooth Pro 235 Hair Straightener is 50% off, now £40 down from £80. It has six heat settings, 'ionic frizz-control' technology for smooth locks, and a heat wrap for storage purposes. Going back to Remington's Shine Therapy Hair Straightener, an Amazon buyer left a five-star review, saying, 'believe the reviews and hype', before adding: "Replaced my 15-year-old GHDs. Got them on a Prime Day deal for £20. I can't believe the quality for the price. I have long, wavy hair. These straightened with 1-2 pass-throughs, and my hair stayed straight the next day as well (this never happens) and felt really silky and shiny." A string of shoppers reported long heat-up times, with one person writing: "Bought to use on my short hair, as I thought it would be better than my thick Dyson straighteners. This new one takes a ridiculous amount of time to heat up to 210, and does not glide smoothly through my hair. Lesson learned, back to the Dyson." An additional user said: "I bought these as my GHDs developed a fault under warranty and will take up to 14 days to be fixed/replaced. I researched and found these, a quarter of the cost of my GHDs, they heat up fast and straighten my hair just as good. I highly recommend these." A fourth customer concludes: "These hair straighteners are a must-have. Very reasonably priced. I wasn't expecting much for the price, but they straightened my thick curly hair in 15/20 minutes when previously I had always used GHds, which took 45 minutes at least. I love the wide plate and the different temperatures you can select depending on your hair type. They even get my hair straighter and smoother than the GHDs!"

‘Incredible' fast food chain from Australia to open 100 new UK stores

It's been called 'the best Mexican on the market' – and now this Aussie-born favourite is planning to take over the UK. The popular fast food chain Zambrero, known for its customisable burritos and burrito bowls, is set to open 100 new UK restaurants by 2030. The Mexican-inspired chain first launched in London in 2021 and has since expanded to 13 locations, including Manchester, Birmingham, Essex and Reading. But it's not stopping there. Zambrero has confirmed more UK sites are on the way next year, including its very first Scottish location. 'We've had a lot of interest in the brand during the last couple of years – and now is the right time for us to expand through our franchise partners and work towards opening 100 restaurants by 2030,' Emily Teh, CEO of Zambrero UK, said. So, what's on the Zambrero menu? Customers can build their own burritos and bowls, nachos and quesadillas from a range of fillings, including pulled pork, chicken, cauliflower and spicy black rice, with salsa, cheese, sour cream and guacamole to top it off. Prices start from around £10 for a small burrito or burrito bowl, with larger sizes coming in closer to around £13. It'll also cost you extra for chips and guac, and churros. Zambrero is probably best known for its burritos and burrito bowls, and some customers have called them the best around. One reviewer raved on TikTok about the Manchester location, calling it 'incredible' and claiming it had 'the best burrito in town'. Founded in Canberra, Australia, in 2005, Zambrero has become the largest Mexican restaurant chain in both Australia and Ireland. With more than 300 global sites, it's now aiming to expand into the UK lunch scene. Social media is filled with praise, and TripAdvisor reviews are equally glowing. 'An absolute must go. I have 3 / 5 of my lunches there. Best Mexican on the market,' one customer wrote. Another called it 'the perfect work lunch spot', and if the expansion goes to plan, you might be seeing one open near your office sooner than you think. It's not the only popular fast food chain expanding in the UK. One burger joint from the Netherlands is also planning to open 100 new UK sites. More Trending Fat Phill's, which is said to be home to Amsterdam's 'best burger', quietly launched in Clapham Junction in London at the end of 2024, serving up smash burgers, American-style sandwiches, loaded fries and mac and cheese. The chain, also known as Fat Phill's Diner, is still relatively new, having only been founded in 2019 by Armin Vahabian, but it's already got 18 locations across the Netherlands. It's been brought over here by Freshly Baked Ltd, the franchisor behind pretzel joint Auntie Anne's UK, and as part of this deal, there are plans to open several more sites on London high streets in the near future and develop up to 100 sites nationwide over the next 10 years. View More » Multiple sites also look set to roll out across Ireland by 2030. Zambrero has 13 different stores across five UK locations. These include: London: Cannon Street, Eastcheap, Kentish Town, Battersea, Crouch End, Twickenham Essex: Chelmsford and Loughton Reading: Queen Victoria Street Birmingham: Bull Ring and Colmore Row Manchester Cross Street and Manchester Picadilly Do you have a story to share? The new ghd curling range provides 'all-day hold' and leaves hair 'shiny and smooth'

The Chronos Curve collections claims to create frizz-free curls up to three times faster than other models ghd is a household name for its salon-quality hair tools, and now it's taking curls to the next level. Hot on the heels of the viral success of its Chronos straightener, the brand has launched the Chronos Curve range: a new lineup of four curling tools designed to create long-lasting waves and ringlets that stay bouncy from morning to night. The collection includes two curling wands and two tongs, each engineered with ghd's signature heat technology and ceramic barrels designed to deliver shiny, frizz-free curls. All of these are priced at £189, which is consistent with ghd's high-end pricing, but if you're acquainted with the brand, you'll know that the tools often justify the hype. The Max Wand comes with a large barrel designed for longer hair and loose curls, while the Classic Tong promises polished, defined waves. Meanwhile, the Grand Tong appeared capable of producing voluminous ringlets that bounce with every stride. The Conical Wand, the most adaptable of the four, is designed to create more relaxed, natural curls. I tried the Conical when it first launched, and I was seriously impressed. It took me around 10 to 15 minutes to style my whole head, which is efficient by my standards. The wand was easy to handle and lightweight enough that my arms weren't aching halfway through. Shop the range £189 ghd Buy Now on ghd Product Description The curls also held impressively well without much hairspray - slightly softer but still there - and my hair looked smooth and shiny throughout the evening. However, I found it difficult to style the shorter front layers, so it's worth noting if you have a similar style. The range all operates at a consistent 185°C, which the brand calls the 'optimum styling temperature' - and in fairness, the Conical Wand worked perfectly for my fine-to-medium hair. However, if you prefer tongs with adjustable settings, Babyliss' Rose Quartz 25mm Curling Tong (£35, Amazon) has six temperature settings, ranging from 160°C to 210°C. Otherwise, the TRESemmé Large Ceramic Curling Tong (£27, Argos) has three settings, with a maximum temperature of 200°C. As for the other ghd tools, they've also had some great reviews. On the Grand Tong, this person wrote: "It slides through my hair to the ends smoothly and doesn't stick or pull at all. I like the fact I can curl right to the tips of my hair, which I struggle to do with the wand." Meanwhile, a Classic Tong user said: "The curls lasted all day & still looked great the next day! The tongs were quick to heat up and cool down. It came with a handy glove which helped protect my hand from the heat of the tool." Unfortunately, it isn't all good news. A person who used the Grand Tong said: "Unfortunately, the curls didn't hold in my thick, coarse hair—even with prep and setting spray. Although the tong is advertised to give long-lasting curls (up to 24 hours), mine fell out within a few hours, which was disappointing." And someone who tried the Max Wand gave a mixed three-star review: "The 38mm barrel was a bit wide for my length of hair, so I ended up with loose waves rather than curls." But a positive review reads: "I have tried various hair curlers in the past, but never one that worked for me. The thick barrel was great for my long hair, creating soft, wavy curls that I loved. Plus, it was really quick. "In less than 30 minutes, I had completed the style from start to finish, and it would usually take me a couple of hours."
