It's Still Summer. Let's Talk Road Trip Books.

New York Times4 days ago
Summer is the season for road trips, and also for road trip stories. Jack Kerouac's 'On the Road' may be the most famous example in American literature — but there are lots of other great road trip books, so this week the Book Review's staff critics Dwight Garner, Alexandra Jacobs and Jennifer Szalai presented readers with a list of 18 of their favorites. On this episode of the podcast they chat with the host Gilbert Cruz about the project, their picks and the top-down, wind blown, carefree appeal of the road trip narrative as a genre.
'It's such a flexible form,' Garner says. 'You can do anything with the road trip idea. So many novels that aren't even road trip novels contain scenes where one of the major characters flees the house and goes away for a few days just to escape what's there — often fleeing in search of something else.'
Books discussed in this episode:
'On the Road,' by Jack Kerouac
'Sing, Unburied, Sing,' by Jesmyn Ward
'Lost Children Archive,' by Valeria Luiselli
'I Am Homeless if This Is Not My Home,' by Lorrie Moore
'Tramps Like Us," by Joe Westmoreland
'Driving Mr. Albert,' by Michael Paterniti
'Gypsy: A Memoir," by Gypsy Rose Lee
'The Dog of the South,' by Charles Portis
'All Fours,' by Miranda July
'Hearts,' by Hilma Wolitzer
'The Pigeon Tunnel: Stories From My Life,' by John le Carré
'Machine Dreams,' by Jayne Anne Phillips
'Lonesome Dove,' by Larry McMurtry
'Lolita,' by Vladimir Nabokov
'The Grapes of Wrath,' by John Steinbeck
'The Price of Salt,' by Patricia Highsmith
We would love to hear your thoughts about this episode, and about the Book Review's podcast in general. You can send them to books@nytimes.com.

Meghan toasts to ‘beautiful day' as she launches new rose wine

The Duchess of Sussex has toasted to a 'beautiful day' to mark the launch of her latest rose wine. Meghan released her As Ever Napa Valley Rose 2024 – described as evoking the same 'soft notes of stone fruit, gentle minerality, and a lasting finish' as the 2023 rose – on Tuesday. It comes after the previous rose, launched last month, sold out within an hour. In a video posted on her Instagram, Meghan can be seen uncorking a bottle marked 'Bottle #1' in front of bouquets of pink and cream flowers – followed by close-up of the cork bearing the As Ever logo. Alongside the clip, she wrote: 'Here we go! First bottle off the line! 'Toasting to a beautiful day: Our Napa rose is live @aseverofficial.' As with the previous wine, the beverage is priced at more than £67 for a minimum three-bottle order – and only appeared to be available for US customers to buy, with shipping addresses limited to America. As Ever is Meghan's lifestyle brand which also sells cookie mix, herb tea, flower sprinkles and jams. A post on the company's Instagram show the corks branded with the As Ever logo, with a caption reading: 'C'est l'heure. 'Enjoy your last sips of summer with the newest vintage of our beloved Napa Valley rose.' The website describes the drink as 'thoughtfully curated by Meghan, Duchess of Sussex' and that it has been 'made to be enjoyed with the ones you love'. The pale pink wine, which comes in a clear bottle with a white, gold-rimmed label, has an ABV (alcohol by volume) of 13.5% – one percent lower than its predecessor. As with the 2023 rose, the newest wine is not available to buy in orders of less than three bottles. Three bottles cost 90 US dollars (around £67), six bottles cost 159 dollars (around £119) including a 12% discount, and 12 bottles are priced at 300 dollars (around £225) including a 17% discount. Meghan and the Duke of Sussex left the UK and moved to California five years ago for a new life after stepping down from the working monarchy. Napa Valley wine country is in northern California, around 50 miles from San Francisco.

Amex GBT Aims for $155 Million in Savings From CWT Merger

The stock market liked the optimistic story that Amex GBT was telling about the CWT acquisition and margin expansion. Large mergers can be messy affairs, but Global Business Travel Group officials are focused on cost savings now that the merger with CWT is slated to close soon. 'We expect to deliver approximately $155 million in identified net synergies and have a proven track record of integrating large acquisitions and achieving our synergy targets,' Paul Abbott, the CEO of Amex GBT, said during the second-quarter earnings call. Those savings would be over a three-year period. The merger of the #1 (Amex GBT) and #4 (CWT) largest global players in business travel is on track to close before the end of September now that the U.S. Department of Justice dismissed its own lawsuit against the merger. Abbott said that 'given the recent clarity on CWT,' it plans to initiate additional share repurchases in the next few months. The CEO said he can't comment on CWT's financial performance but will do so in November during the next quarterly presentation. 'Our commercial success, margin expansion and improved demand environment give us confidence to raise and narrow our full-year 2025 guidance,' Abbott said. Customer Wins The commercial success was a reference to market share gains and $3.2 billion in new customer wins over the past year. Some $2.2 billion of those wins were of small- and medium-sized businesses, a segment that has been traditionally hard to capture. Amex GBT's adjusted EBITDA increased 4% in the second quarter. Revenue rose 1% to $631 million. After macro uncertainty saw corporate travel demand dip modestly in April, transactions grew a combined 2% in May and June. 'We continue to see green shoots into July that give us confidence that the demand environment has improved,' Abbott said.

Liam Neeson Hilariously Mocked Paramount Execs Into Greenlighting THE NAKED GUN Reboot — GeekTyrant

The Naked Gun reboot may be winning over fans now, but it almost didn't happen. According to director Akiva Schaffer, Paramount wasn't immediately sold on the idea, even with Liam Neeson attached as the lead. So, how did it get the greenlight? Simple. Neeson roasted the Paramount execs in a hilarious test scene that left no room for doubt. Schaffer told Filmmaker Magazine: '[Liam Neeson's casting] was not quite enough for the studio for whatever reason, and they asked us to do a proof of concept.' To prove their vision, Schaffer and his team went scrappy. They threw together a five-minute mock sequence on the Paramount lot in an old warehouse filled with lighting equipment, turning it into a gritty noir-style set reminiscent of Beverly Hills Cop II . The scene mashed up parts from different bits in the script, including an interrogation with Kevin Durand and comedy pulled from the sequence with Busta Rhymes. But the mic-drop moment came at the end, when Neeson locked eyes with the camera and delivered a fourth-wall-breaking takedown that sealed the deal. 'There's that noir lighting on his face, and he says, 'That goes for you, too. Yes, you, the Paramount greenlight committee. I see you there. What the f*ck are you waiting for? Why don't you get your pencil pushers to sign [on] the line? 'I'll tell you what. Make sure they have a line item for adult diapers and cocaine in case one of you ever wants to visit set,' or something like that. He basically talks shit to them and leaves. And it worked!' Apparently, that ballsy scene was exactly the kind of chaos the studio needed to see. I would love to see that video, so hopefully it gets released one day! The final film delivers exactly what that proof-of-concept promised… a wild, ridiculous ride that pays loving tribute to the 1988 classic. Neeson steps into the spotlight as the son of Leslie Nielsen's iconic Frank Drebin. The new Naked Gun lineup includes Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, Busta Rhymes, and Cody Rhodes, bringing a mix of comedy, action, and hilarious absurdity. The Naked Gun is in theaters now and is absolutely worth seeing if you're into this franchise!
