Bangladesh Test captain Najmul Hossain Shanto stood down from the role "for the betterment of the team" after their innings-and-78-run defeat by Sri Lanka in the second Test in Colombo.
Shanto announced his decision in the post-match press conference, and had already informed the Bangladesh Cricket Board, saying he did not believe three captains - a different person in each format - was the correct structure.
The 26-year-old was replaced as 50-over captain by all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz on 12 June, while wicketkeeper Litton Das is their T20 skipper.
"I don't want to continue as captain in this format, and I want to give a clear message to everyone: this is not a personal matter," said Shanto.

"It is entirely for the betterment of the team, and I believe this will help the team.
"If the cricket board feels they will continue with three captains in three formats, that will be their decision."
Bangladesh won four of their 14 Tests under Shanto's leadership, losing nine.
The latest defeat came on Saturday when Sri Lanka needed less than six overs to take the final four Sri Lanka wickets needed to complete victory.
Left-arm spinner Prabath Jayasuriya took three of them to finish with 5-56 and Tharindu Ratnayake secured the win when he trapped Ebadot Hossain lbw.
It means Sri Lanka win the two-Test series 1-0 after a rain-affected first Test finished in a draw.

"There was a difference between two matches," said Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva.
"Bowlers and batters did well in the first innings here. Bowlers had their plans and executed well.
"That's a good morale booster for us, losing the toss and putting the opposition under pressure."
The series marked the start of the new World Test Championship cycle, which runs until 2027.

Pretorius becomes SA's youngest Test centurion

First Test, Bulawayo (day one of five) South Africa 418-9 (Pretorius 153, Bosch 100*; Chivanga 4-83) Zimbabwe Yet to bat Scorecard Lhuan-dre Pretorius became the youngest centurion in South Africa's Test history as he made a brilliant 153 on debut at the age of 19 years and 93 days. The left-handed batter made a hundred off 112 balls on day one of the first Test against Zimbabwe which helped the Proteas reach 418-9 at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. Advertisement Pretorius eclipsed a record which had stood since December 1963 when Graeme Pollock made 120 against Australia in Sydney aged 19 years and 318 days. The wicketkeeper-batter became the 10th youngest Test centurion of all time in a list headed by Mohammad Ashraful of Bangladesh, who was 17 years and 61 days old when he made a hundred against Sri Lanka in 2001. He is the fourth-youngest to do so on debut. He is the youngest player to score 150 in Tests, bettering Javed Miandad, who was 19 years and 119 days old when he scored 163 against New Zealand in 1976. Pretorius came to the crease with South Africa, who are playing their first match since winning the World Test Championship earlier this month, in a bit of trouble at 23-3 but signalled his intent when he hit the fourth ball he faced for six. Advertisement He brought up his century shortly before tea with a clip to square leg off Hamilton Masakadza. Pretorius was eventually dismissed - after getting lives on 30, 54, 55 and 127 - when he pulled a short ball from Tanaka Chivanga, who took 4-83, into the hands of Masakadza at mid-on. His knock of 153 off 160 balls included 11 fours and four sixes and was also his highest score in first-class cricket. "It was amazing. I was quite nervous as 23-3 but it's been a dream come true. I don't think it's sunk it yet. I'm glad today is over," Pretorius said. "I just love batting, fortunately it worked out for me today. It's a real dream come true, and for my parents and family to be here, it tops it off." Advertisement All-rounder Corbin Bosch also brought up his maiden Test hundred off 124 balls and will resume unbeaten on 100 on day two. Who is Lhuan-dre Pretorius? Lhuan-dre Pretorius has made 485 runs in 10 first-class innings at an average of 60.62, including three centuries [Getty Images] With a batting style and frame which has more than a hint of former South Africa skipper Graeme Smith about it, the stocky leftie looks destined for great things. Born in Potchefstroom in March 2006 he was educated in South Africa's private schools system and quickly found his way into the professional game. He was the leading run-scorer at the Under-19 Cricket World Cup in 2024, with 287 runs in six games at an average of 57.40. Not long after he made his domestic T20 debut in South Africa for the Titans at the age of 17 and caught the eye later in the tournament with 82 off 43 balls against Gauteng. Advertisement Pretorius then made 120 on his first-class debut for Titans against Warriors in December 2024 before an impressive knock on his debut in the SA20 led to wider recognition. Pretorius scored a career-best 97 T20 franchise debut for Paarl Royals in January 2025, an innings which caught the eye of England captain Ben Stokes. "One of the many things franchise cricket has done is put young/inexperienced but incredibly talented players opportunities on the biggest stage against the best in the world and show off how good they are. Lhuan-dre Pretorius is doing that right now," Stokes said in a post on X in January. In May 2025, Pretorius was called up to the Indian Premier League by Rajasthan Royals as a replacement for the injured Nitish Rana and appeared in one match as an impact player but did not bat. Advertisement Following the IPL Pretorius played three games for Hampshire in the T20 Blast, having signed as an overseas player in February, where he made scores of one, 37 and 28.

Teenager Pretorius hits century on S Africa Test debut

Teenager Lhuan-dre Pretorius has scored 153 on his debut and Corbin Bosch an unbeaten maiden century as a much-changed South Africa reached 9-418 for nine on the opening day of the first Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. After electing to bat, South Africa were in early trouble at 4-55 with the ball nipping around in the fresh morning conditions, but Pretorius, 19, put on 95 for the fifth wicket with fellow debutant Dewald Brevis (51) to change the course of the innings. He said: "It was amazing. I was quite nervous (when I walked in). I'm glad (the debut is) over. We knew they only had two seamers and we knew we could take the spinners out of the attack. I just love batting, fortunately it worked out for me today." Bosch's late burst provided a first test century for the all-rounder as he finished unbeaten on 100 from 124 balls and will resume on the second day with Kwena Maphaka, who has nine. 💥 150 UP for Lhuan-dré Pretorius on debut! 🏏It's hard to put into words what a scintillating innings this has been: pure shot-making brilliance 🇿🇦💪!A debut for the ages! 🔥#WozaNawe — Proteas Men (@ProteasMenCSA) June 28, 2025 The touring side have only four starters from the side who won the World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord's this month, with several players rested and captain Temba Bavuma unavailable due to injury. Pretorius's153 came from 160 balls as the left-hander became the youngest South African to score a century on a Test debut, hitting 11 fours and four sixes. Zimbabwe twice felt they had him caught behind, but with no third umpire in operation for the two-game series, their vociferous appeals were turned down with no way to challenge the decisions. Seamer Tanaka Chivanga got early joy for the hosts with an excellent spell of bowling, picking up three wickets in the first session and adding the prized scalp of Pretorius for figures of 4-83. The South African youngster tried to pull a steep bouncer from Chivanga but succeeded only in skying the ball to Wellington Masakadza at mid-on. Chivanga removed openers Tony de Zorzi (0) and Matthew Breetzke (13), and David Bedingham (0) in his first spell, bringing Pretorius to the wicket with the score on 23. Wiaan Mulder (17) looked in good touch before he was run out chasing a quick single, but Brevis and Pretorius shared a quickfire 95-run partnership in 86 balls to swing the momentum South Africa's way. Kyle Verreynne (10) came and went cheaply, before Pretorius and Bosch added 108 for the seventh wicket to put the tourists firmly in control.

Neesham set for first red-ball game in three years

Jimmy Neesham has already played eight T20 games for Durham [Getty Images] New Zealand all-rounder Jimmy Neesham is set for his first red-ball game since 2022 after being named in Durham's squad for their County Championship match away to Surrey. Neesham's last four-day game was for Northamptonshire against Kent three years ago, with him exclusively playing white-ball cricket since. Advertisement He was signed by Durham for their T20 Blast campaign, but with David Bedingham and Codi Yusuf both on Test duty with South Africa, there is a spot available. "Jimmy will come into the squad who's pretty keen to play red ball cricket for us so we'll open that door," said head coach Ryan Campbell. Neesham has played 12 Tests for New Zealand with a highest score of 137 not out, but the last of those was in 2017.
