13 Feminist Books That Deserve a Place on Your Nightstand

Voguea day ago
It's officially 'dive into a good book at the beach' season, but there's no rule that says you can't work on your tan (with the help of judiciously applied SPF, please) and expand your feminist consciousness at the same time. To that end, we've rounded up some of our all-time favorite feminist books with the help of a handful of authors whose work never fails to teach us something new and necessary about gender, identity and power.
Where the Girls Are: Growing Up Female with the Mass Media by Susan J. Douglas (1994)
Where the Girls Are

I was in a hot, dusty high school classroom when I first became aware of this book, which my favorite teacher included on our tenth-grade Contemporary American History syllabus (shoutout, Dr. Catapano!). I still return to Douglas's carefully laid-out and incisive social history of feminism as presented by postwar American media whenever I need a refresher on how far we've come. —Emma Specter, culture writer, Vogue
Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo (2019)
It may be surprising to see fiction on this list, but Evaristo's skill at portraying 12 very different protagonists in this Booker Prize-winning novel, which spans decades' worth of race, class, gender, and sexuality-based identity, more than deserves some good old-fashioned feminist acclaim. —ES
Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body by Roxane Gay (2017)
It feels like time can be cleanly divided into 'BH' (Before Hunger) and 'AH' (After Hunger), thanks to the passion and power of Gay's story about attempting to heal from intense trauma by binge-eating, succumbing to the all-too-familiar diet-binge cycle, and, finally, striving to live a full and comfortable life as a fat, Black, queer American woman. —ES
Wages Against Housework by Silvia Federici (1975)
This book is as brief as it is brilliant, which is saying a lot; in it, Italian-American writer, professor, and Marxist feminist Federici applies her prodigious intellectual skill to the question of whether women deserve pay for the domestic labor they disproportionately perform at home. A personal favorite quote: 'Homosexuality and heterosexuality are both working conditions…but homosexuality is workers' control of production, not the end of work.' —ES
Corregidora by Gayl Jones (1975)
A painful read that I couldn't tear myself away from. A book about how, sometimes, the foundation of connection is shared pain. —Jazmine Hughes, writer
Immaculate Conception by Ling Ling Huang (2025)
'I am breathless over this one. I know this one is going to rip people apart in the best way—it just cuts right to the core—the book itself is so emotionally ALIVE in the way that Enka desires her art to be, the way the world in the book experiences Mathilde's art to be. It's so fucking meta what you're able to do—art within art within art. I don't know how you do it, but also don't care to know so I can just revel in it!' —Haley Jakobson, author, Old Enough, in a text to Huang after reading the novel
Love Is an Ex-Country by Randa Jarrar (2021)
Driving cross-country solo is potentially one of the most empowering things a woman can do, and Jarrar gives a new and distinctive voice to the experience in this memoir about traversing America as a queer, Muslim, Palestinian-Egyptian feminist determined to chart the course of her own story. —ES
Hood Feminism: Notes from the Women That a Movement Forgot by Mikki Kendall (2020)
Race created the conditions for one of the greatest original fissures within the feminist movement, which makes Kendall's exploration of the ways in which mainstream feminism has continued to fail women of color feel particularly timely, even five years after its publication. —ES
The Cancer Journals by Audre Lorde (1980)
Lorde's work can be found on Gender Studies 101 reading lists around the world, but The Cancer Journals is particularly notable for its references to the pioneering Black feminist author, professor, and civil rights activist's own struggle with breast cancer and its study of illness and disability as a kind of scaffolding that can partly shape a life. —ES
The Group by Mary McCarthy (1963)
This rollicking read about a group of pretty, privileged (to some degree) Vassar alumnae making their way in the big city may not seem like an overtly feminist text, but nobody did it like McCarthy when it came to giving voice to women's sexual appetites, professional dreams, and interpersonal desires. —ES
Miss Major Speaks: Conversations with a Black Trans Revolutionary by Toshio Meronek and
Miss Major Griffin-Gracy (2023)
Miss Major Speaks: Conversations with a Black Trans Revolutionary

This book helped me not only see myself, but see my community in a clearer, brighter light. I've known Miss Major nearly 20 years now and her wisdom has thoroughly shaped my life. This book captures her vibrant, joyful voice in conversation with Toshio Meronek. For those who aren't familiar, Miss Major is a trans elder who has led and shaped trans and gender non-conforming people's fight for a just, inclusive world in too many ways to count. Toshio and Miss Major engage in a conversation that draws out history and story and memory in such a distinctive way, and I'm so grateful to Miss Major for sharing her wisdom with us all. —Tourmaline, artist and author, Marsha: The Joy and Defiance of Marsha P. Johnson
The Argonauts by Maggie Nelson (2016)
Gender is just one of the topics that Nelson excavates in this memoir-cum-philosophical-theory project about meeting, falling in love with, and building a family with her transmasculine partner, but the central message of body liberation (for trans individuals as well as pregnant people) that Nelson disseminates is a powerful one. —ES
SCUM Manifesto by Valerie Solanas (1967)
You can't make a proper feminist reading list without eventually coming to Solanas, whose exhortation to women was simple and clear: Overthrow the patriarchy and stop letting men occupy almost all the positions of power in global society. Is this one quite radical? Sure. Does it feel more relevant than ever in our current hellscape? Absolutely. —ES

Tarek and Heather Rae El Moussa's Show 'The Flipping El Moussas' Is Cancelled Amid HGTV Purge: Source

NEED TO KNOW A source has confirmed to PEOPLE that Tarek and Heather Rae El Moussa's HGTV show, The Flipping El Moussas, has not been renewed The news comes amid a number of shocking cancellations from the network, including Christina Haack's home renovation show, Christina on the Coast Both Tarek and Heather have yet to publicly address the newsTarek and Heather Rae El Moussa's show The Flipping El Moussas is not returning to HGTV, a source confirms to PEOPLE. The house flipping show starring the married couple is officially ending after two seasons, amid a slew of shocking cancellations from HGTV. Christina Haack's HGTV show, Christina on the Coast, is also among the many shows that were slashed, a source confirmed to PEOPLE on July 15. Premiering in March 2023, The Flipping El Moussas followed Tarek and Heather as they navigated the highs and lows of house flipping in Southern California. In season one, viewers also got to see an inside look at their personal lives as they prepared for the arrival of their son Tristan, now 2. Season 2 saw the real estate duo tackle even tougher projects while also juggling life as a family of five. (Tarek shares two older children — daughter Taylor, 14, and son Brayden, 9 — with ex-wife Haack.) While both The Flipping El Moussas and Christina on the Coast have been canceled, a source tells PEOPLE that the trio's other hit show, The Flip Off, has been picked up for a second season but hasn't started filming yet. All three stars have yet to publicly address the news, however a number of HGTV hosts have spoken out about the network's recent programming purge. Bargain Block, Farmhouse Fixer, Married to Real Estate, Battle on the Beach and Izzy Does It have also been canceled, sparking outrage from fans. Before The Flipping El Moussas, Tarek starred in Flip or Flop from 2013 to 2022 alongside his then-wife Haack. The exes split in 2016 after seven years of marriage, and currently maintain an amicable co-parenting relationship. Tarek has also hosted a solo house flipping series, Flipping 101, which debuted its fourth season in April. It is currently unclear whether this project is being picked up for another season. Meanwhile, The Flipping El Moussas marked Heather's HGTV debut after she previously starred in Netflix's real estate docudrama, Selling Sunset. She officially left the series in season 8 after revealing she was 'not called back' to film in the middle of season 7 following her maternity leave. During an exclusive interview with PEOPLE in 2023, Heather opened up about being excited to leave Selling Sunset behind her and start a new chapter with The Flipping El Moussas. "I love being able to prioritize my family and my happiness and step away from some of the drama that Selling Sunset brought into my life," she said at the time. "But I can just film with my husband now, drama-free," she continued. "I mean, the drama's in the houses, it's not with the people. And that is so incredible that I don't have to worry about fighting with a girl if I go to work." Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. Of working on The Flipping El Moussas, she admitted that while "It's a lot of work," she enjoyed tackling each challenging project with her husband. "I love flipping houses. It's very rewarding, it's very exciting, and I love being able to take a nasty, beat-up disgusting house and transform it into something beautiful." Read the original article on People

Alabama football lineman claims 'team grill master' status

Leave it to an interior lineman to make the claim as Alabama football's best griller. After all, who better than a 315-pound defensive tackle like Tim Keenan to be smoking proteins in large quantities? The Birmingham native admits to an ongoing learning curve when it comes to brisket − the trickiest, most temperamental of all smoked meats − but Keenan will put his barbecue game up against anyone else on the roster. "I'm the grill master, now. I can throw some chicken on there for you, smoked Rotel, good burgers, ribs," Keenan said Wednesday at SEC Media Days. "But I'm working on the brisket." VIDEO: Alabama football's Tim Keenan III talks about confidence in Kalen DeBoer at SEC media days TALKING SEASON: Alabama football LB Lawson on FSU QB's brash remarks: 'All disrespect will be addressed' Keenan enters his final season at the college level with high expectations as a returning starter in what should be one of the SEC's top defenses. Asked about the Alabama brand as it relates to coach Kalen DeBoer's recent stretch of recruiting success, Keenan tied in grill skills with his answer. "On these (official visits), you've got players who want to host these recruits. We even grilled out at my house. It's always good for the recruits to see us in (that) way," he said. From there, he rattled off his specialties; properly smoked Rotel can make for a fine dip, although Keenan likes to stick primarily with proteins. He's about to invest in a pellet grill, he said, with hopes that he can dial in brisket perfection with it. That's a lofty goal, but not one he needs to reach to be confident around the food fire. "Either way," he said. "We're going to have some good eats." Tuscaloosa News columnist Chase Goodbread is also the weekly co-host of Crimson Cover TV on WVUA-23.
