British number one Jack Draper ready to carry hopes of a nation at Wimbledon

He was upset in the second round last year by compatriot Cameron Norrie in Murray's final appearance at Wimbledon but since then has reached the US Open semi-finals and won his first Masters 1000 title in Indian Wells.
'Obviously when Andy retired, they said I was the next in line,' said Draper. 'I know it's Wimbledon coming up, but I think I didn't really think about it then, and I've improved so much and put myself in this position.
'I'll do my best to keep trying and improving, to show my best tennis out there, to hopefully present myself as the player and the person I want to be.
'Obviously Andy has done an unbelievable job of that and has been incredibly successful and has become adored by the nation. It's obviously big shoes to fill. I'm aware of that. At the same time I'm confident in myself that hopefully I can inspire people like Andy has done.'
Draper is a good friend of Murray but he has not yet leaned too much on either the Scot's or predecessor Tim Henman's many years of experience of being the great British hope.

'I haven't spoken to them too much, in all honesty, but I know they're there if I need them,' said Draper, who is the only seed among 23 British singles hopefuls.
'Obviously, everyone has a different way of dealing with their emotions and dealing with things.
'Andy has given me an amazing amount of feedback and advice over the years. I think one of the biggest things is everyone is on their different journey.
'He also said he doesn't like to interfere. I think he's very reluctant to comment on anything to do with me because he understands what it's like to be in this position, to have people asking me stuff all the time about things.
'I know Andy's right there for me if I need him anytime. There may come a point where I ask him a few things, and I'm sure he'll come back and be extremely helpful and supportive, as always.'

Draper's prospects do not appear to have been helped by a brutal draw that put his French Open conqueror Alexander Bublik, young star Jakub Mensik, Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner all in his path.
But the fourth seed is not yet looking past his first-round opponent, Argentina's Sebastian Baez.
'I haven't looked at that at all,' he said. 'I look at my first round, who I have. I respect every person in the draw. Obviously I've got Baez on Tuesday, and I'm not looking further than that.
'I know he's a strong player. He's here off his own merit. I look no further than him. I try and think about that as I go on. But, firstly, we'll start with that one.'

Tomos Williams forced out of Lions tour due to hamstring issue

The British and Irish Lions have suffered a hammer blow after Tomos Williams was ruled out of the rest of their tour to Australia with the hamstring problem sustained against Western Force on Saturday. Ben White has been called up from the Scotland squad that is currently in New Zealand to fill the vacancy created by Williams' injury, which occurred early in the second-half at Optus Stadium. Two appearances into his debut Lions tour and Williams had laid down an early marker for Test selection at scrum-half with his two-try display in Perth placing him in pole position to face the Wallabies on July 19. But the reigning Gallagher Premiership player of the season is now heading home to reduce Wales' representation in Andy Farrell's squad to a single player, Jac Morgan. 'Unfortunately Tomos has been ruled out of the rest of the tour with a hamstring injury. Ben White will join us from the Scotland squad and will fly over from New Zealand,' Farrell said.

Monday set to be one of the hottest June days ever with temperatures to hit 34C

Much of England will enter a fourth day of a heatwave, forecast to be hotter than holiday spots in Barbados, Jamaica and Mexico. Since 1960, UK temperatures in June have surpassed 34C in only three years, with the hottest being 35.6C, recorded on June 28 1976. Here is the 4cast for Monday 📅 Hot across southeast England in particular with temperatures reaching 34 Celsius 🌡️ — Met Office (@metoffice) June 29, 2025 Wimbledon is set for its hottest opening day ever on Monday, with temperatures expected to surpass the previous record of 29.3C set on June 25 2001. The hottest day the tournament has seen was on July 1 2015 when temperatures reached 35.7C. A tropical night may also be on the cards, with parts of England to stay above 20C overnight into Tuesday, the Met Office said. Parts of south-east England could then hit 35C on Tuesday. But, Scotland and Northern Ireland face heavy rain and cooler temperatures. Charlwood in Surrey recorded the hottest temperature of the year so far at 33.2C on June 21. Where is the heat building and how long will it last? The week ahead video below tells all and more 👇 — Met Office (@metoffice) June 29, 2025 A second amber heat health alert in two weeks came into force on Friday. The alert, which covers London, the East Midlands, the South East, the South West and the East of England, will last until 6pm on Tuesday. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) also issued a yellow alert for Yorkshire and Humber and the West Midlands for the same time period, warning of significant impacts on health and social care services. An amber alert was previously issued for all regions in England on June 19, the first time it had been used since September 2023. An official heatwave is recorded when areas reach a certain temperature for three consecutive days, with thresholds varying from 25C to 28C in different parts of the UK. London Fire Brigade assistant commissioner Thomas Goodall said: 'London is already facing its second heatwave of the year and we know that people will be looking forward to getting outside to enjoy the wonderful weather. 'But the high temperatures and low rainfall in recent months means the current risk of wildfires is severe. 'So far this year, firefighters have responded to around 14 wildfires in the capital. 'There have also been countless callouts to smaller fires involving grass, trees and in other outdoor spaces, as well as in people's gardens. 'During this latest heatwave, it is important everyone acts responsibly to prevent fires from occurring. 'As the weather has been so dry, it only takes a few sparks to lead to a fire spreading rapidly. 'In London, this is can be dangerous because so many of our green spaces lie close to homes and other properties.'

Carlos Alcaraz reveals Andy Murray's role in his Wimbledon title defence

Carlos Alcaraz heads to SW19 aiming to make it three titles in a row and he will have hope to have picked up tips from two-time winner Andy Murray having met up with the tennis icon Carlos Alcaraz needs no advice on how to walk away from Wimbledon as a winner. The Spaniard has won the last two men's singles titles in SW19 - and will be aiming to make it a three-peat this summer. But one man who he will be keen to get some words of wisdom from is legendary ex-tennis star Andy Murray. The 38-year-old claimed the trophy in 2013 and 2016. ‌ And while the pair could potentially share stories of their own Wimbledon successes, it appears they are more keen on focusing on a different sport with plans to meet up ahead of the latest edition of the tournament. ‌ Asked what he does ahead of major Grand Slam events, Alcaraz replied: "I play some golf. I play some golf. Actually, I play with Andy Murray on Monday and a few more players. 'Just went to the center a little bit. Just wanted to go to the center a little bit, walk around, have a good food, and just having quality time with them doing some stuff that probably I wouldn't be able to do it while the tournament is on.' And while Murray and Alcaraz may not exchange tips regarding Wimbledon, the same might not be said of Murray and fellow Brit Jack Draper. Nick Kyrgios believes Murray could have a big role to play in his pursuit of a Grand Slam title. Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: 'Draper's an amazing player, great athlete, big lefty, and I think he's got more than enough game to win a Grand Slam, that's for sure. 'You know, he's super, super dialled in now, super professional. And I think Andy Murray's going to play a big part in helping him get over the line. And I think, yeah, I think Draper could definitely be winning Grand Slam soon.' ‌ Meanwhile, Alcaraz has given more of insight into his preparations and has claimed that the prospect of becoming a three-in-a-row champion is not in his mind. He added: 'Well, yeah, I mean, I'm coming here thinking that, yeah, I really want to win the title. 'I really want to lift the trophy. Not thinking about how much player have done it, you know, winning three Wimbledons in a row. 'I'm just thinking about, okay, I just want to be ready and just want to prepare myself in the best way possible, just to start the tournament with a lot of confident. Obviously I feel a lot of confident right now (smiling). 'But just thinking about still going forward, it's still doing the good things, and start the tournament. So two weeks could be really long on a Grand Slam, but right now I'm not thinking about who I could join if I win three Wimbledons in a row.'
