"Walton can do it all" - Ex-Blazers coach believed Bill Walton was better than Russell and Wilt

"Walton can do it all" - Ex-Blazers coach believed Bill Walton was better than Russell and Wilt originally appeared on Basketball Network. The late Bill Walton stands out as one of the most gifted big men in NBA history. Before injuries hampered his illustrious career, Walton showcased a remarkable array of skills that set him apart from his peers. Advertisement In his prime, Big Red was a force to be reckoned with, demonstrating exceptional versatility both offensively and defensively. Bill's ability to control the game was nothing short of mesmerizing as he could score, rebound and stop his opponents. Walton's presence in the paint was a game-changer, leading many fans and analysts to draw comparisons to legends such as Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain. In fact, former Portland Trail Blazers coach Dr. Jack Ramsay even considered Bill a superior version of the iconic big men. "Bill Russell was a great shot blocker. Wilt Chamberlain was a great offensive player. But Walton can do it all," Ramsay told Sport magazine. "I was with the Boston Celtics when Russell came into the league," Lakers Coach Bill Sharman told the Los Angeles Times. "Walton is the same type of player. Extremely intelligent — but besides that, he has tremendous basketball instinct." Advertisement Walton's legendary transformation Prior to turning pro, Big Red was already an exceptional player. He led UCLA to two national championships and was named the Naismith College Player of the Year three times during his college years. As expected, many anticipated Walton's arrival in the NBA. In 1974, after averaging 19.3 points and 14.7 rebounds in his junior year, Bill was drafted by the Blazers as the No. 1 overall pick. Walton quickly established himself as one of the most dominant centers in the league. In 1977, he was named an All-Star for the first time. That same year, Bill also made history and led the Blazers to their first NBA championship. The following year, he was crowned the NBA's MVP. Advertisement Unfortunately, Walton suffered multiple injuries after his MVP season. However, along with his recovery, Big Red also showed his maturity as a player. He reinvented himself and embraced a different role on the court. By transforming his game, Walton won one more NBA title with the Boston Celtics in 1986 as a role player. Bill's efforts did not go unnoticed as he was also named the league's Sixth Man of the Year that season. Related: Pippen once missed a layup to prevent MJ from getting a triple-double in the 1997 Finals: "I didn't want him to tie me" Walton is arguably the NBA's GOAT center Some may argue that Russell, Chamberlain or any legendary big man shouldn't be compared to Walton, as each of them had distinct greatness and legacy. However, for renowned sports writer and host Bill Simmons, Bill was just different. In fact, Simmons even once assessed that Big Red may have become the greatest center of all time. Advertisement "As you know, I love Bill Walton," Simmons once said. "He was the epilogue of my book. I think he is the greatest what-if guy of the last 50 years. He was the best player on the planet for 18 months. How we feel about [Nikola] Jokic right now, we felt about Bill Walton. ... On paper may be the greatest center ever in terms of total package. Russell is the greatest center, and Kareem's the second-best center. But if you're just talking about tools and ceiling and what a center can do on both ends, doing the stuff Jokic did in the playoffs combined with shot-blocking and rebounding." In 1993, Walton was finally inducted into the Hall of Fame as a two-time champion, two-time All-Star and Finals MVP, among others. He was also named one of the NBA's greatest 75 players. Today, Bill's impact on the game still leaves an indelible mark that continues to resonate with fans and players alike. Texas A&M Football Secures Top Three Spot with Oregon and Alabama for Five-Star Edge Rusher Anthony 'Tank' Jones

Texas A&M Football Secures Top Three Spot with Oregon and Alabama for Five-Star Edge Rusher Anthony 'Tank' Jones originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Texas A&M football is in the running for many elite, four- and five-star recruits. On defense, especially, the Aggies are pulling in recruit after recruit. They have four-star edge rushers Tristian Givens, Jordan Carter, and Samu Moala committed with hopes to land KJ Ford soon. Advertisement Now, another edge has officially entered the mix as he revealed Texas A&M is one of his top three schools he's considering committing to. Texas A&M Aggies head coach Mike Lysaker-USA TODAY Sports Anthony "Tank" Jones is a five-star recruit from Mobile, Ala. and is the No. 16 overall recruit from the class of 2026. He's also the No. 3 edge rusher and No. 2 student-athlete from Alabama. Now with his decision date approaching, Jones announced that Oregon, Alabama, and Texas A&M have made the cut for his final three. The Aggies and Ducks are working simultaneously to pluck Jones out of his home state and get his impressive talents on their fields. Advertisement As a junior, he tallied 84 tackles, including 18 tackles for loss. Jones added an additional 16 sacks on his and his St. Paul Episcopal High School team's way to the second round of their playoffs. His eyes on the field are impressive, matching his 230-plus pound frame while his speed threatens opposing offensive linemen. Cooper Petagna wrote in the rising junior' scouting report: "[Jones is a] physically imposing pass rusher in possession of a high octane motor that allows him to generate pressures in both a two or three point stance while operating in an odd front . . . [he] displays a collegiate ready frame in conjunction with an explosive lower half that bodes well for his ability to make an impact sooner rather than later at the next level." Jones is also a three-sport athlete, playing basketball and competing in track and field at his high school as well. He won the discus state championship in the 2024-25 season with a 161-5 toss. His 56-3.75 shot put rep led him to second place. Advertisement Jones' most recent visit was with Alabama on June 20. Out of the three schools, College Station was his first stop on June 5 and followed by Oregon the next weekend. He would be an intense addition to the Aggies class of 2026. If Jones decides on Texas A&M, though, it'll be hard work for head coach Mike Elko to keep other schools from flipping his commitment. Gophers Secure P.J. Fleck for the Long Run

The Minnesota Gophers football team has seen one of the best recruiting cycles in recent memory. Not only has head coach P.J. Fleck kept in-state talent home, but he has done a great job bring talent to Dinkytown. Minnesota has an important season ahead of them in that the schedule sets up favorably. They could be a dark horse not only in the Big Ten, but may play their way into national relevance as well. Advertisement P.J. Fleck has been a solidifying force for the program since taking over, and now he's destined to last a bit longer. Related Headlines P.J. Fleck gets an extension with Minnesota Gophers Although P.J. Fleck wasn't heading towards contract uncertainty, athletic director Mark Coyle tacked on another year of security for his head football coach. The new extension keeps Fleck with the Minnesota Gophers at least through the 2030 season. 'Gophers football coach P.J. Fleck will get a one-year contract extension with increased retention bonuses, pending approval at the next Board of Regents meeting July 11…Under the new deal, Fleck's salary would remain $6 million, but he would receive a $1 million retention bonus after Year 1 and $1.6 million after Year 6. All told, Fleck's new deal would pay him an additional $2.3 million in retention bonuses. The university said Fleck's deal, including the retention bonuses, would rank tied for 11th in total salary out of 18 Big Ten football head coaches.' Joe Christensen – Star Tribune Fleck took over the Minnesota program in 2017 after spending four years as the head coach of Western Michigan. In eight years with the Gophers he owns a 97-58 (.598) record. He has taken the Gophers to six bowl games and has wins in all of them. Advertisement The Minnesota Gophers football program has struggled to remain relevant in previous decades, but Fleck has been a stabilizing force for the university. It's something that athletic director Mark Coyle also noted when talking about the impending extension. 'P.J. has consistently recruited and coached teams that Minnesotans can be proud of on and off the field. The program has produced record GPAs and 10 Academic All-Americans under Fleck, and his teams have won a consistent level not seen in more than 75 years. He has added significant value to the University, its student athletes and all of Minnesota. It is critical that we keep him.' Mark Coyle – Star Tribune This current run has consistently resulted in multiple NFL draft picks. Fleck has proven an ability to develop top-tier talent and good men.
