In 2005, a village warden Lalsu Pungati was lynched in a guerrilla kangaroo court in Nargunda, Gadchiroli. His son, Sainath Pungati, was directly appointed as a police constable. Both received their job letters from chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on July 22. The ceremony marked a significant step in rehabilitation of families affected by Maoist atrocities. So far, 56 victims have been recruited into the police force in three years.
Once helpless and cringing under fear after Maoists dragged their fathers out of their homes and slaughtered them in public, these orphans of insurgency have transformed their grief into resolve. Years passed, and the fear diminished as law enforcement turned the tables on the guerrillas. "We witnessed our father's killing. His lifeless body and my inconsolable mother are still fresh in our memory. We will serve the police with sincerity and combat Maoists," said an appointee.

"The recruitments are based on special relaxations for Scheduled Tribe categories, requiring only physical attributes and a minimum qualification of Class 7, with no written examinations," SP Gadchiroli, Neelotpal, said.
These appointments are part of a 2018 govt decision to rehabilitate Maoist-hit families by offering direct appointments to Group C and D posts in various departments. Fadnavis, who also virtually inaugurated new administrative buildings for police posts at Dechalipetha and Jimlagatta hamlets, stated the govt is keen to rehabilitate families who suffered in the hands of Maoists.
The appointment of Naame Nagamani and Sainath by the CM himself symbolizes a powerful shift, stated IG State Anti-naxal operation cell, Sandip Patil. Once victims of Maoist terror, they are now empowered to protect their communities, vowing to end the menace that shattered their families.

Woman in car ‘using GMap' falls in creek, saved in time
This is a representative image NAVI MUMBAI: A 29-year-old woman driving a high-end car to reach Ulwe, took the road leading to Belapur creek jetty instead of driving over the bridge. The car plunged into the creek at a dead-end around 1 am on Friday. She was rescued by the coastal security police team deployed at the jetty, and her car was pulled out using a hydraulic crane. The woman, Shweta Sharma, a Kharghar resident , was on her way to Ulwe to a friend's residence. It was raining heavily and it was pitch dark when the woman took a left turn near NMMC headquarters. Instead of getting onto the Belapur creek bridge, she drove towards the service road, under the bridge, unaware that it was a dead-end towards the jetty, said senior inspector of coastal security police, Santosh Kane. Spotting a car heading towards the jetty, cops at the spot signalled her to stop. "But before she could halt the car plunged about 10 feet into the creek water," said Kane. "Within two minutes, she was spotted outside the car as the door opened. She was struggling to remain afloat in the water amid high tide. The Indian Rescue Team of Atal Setu pulled her onto a rescue boat," he said. Accused uses neighbour's identity to hoodwink cops; jumps bail, absconds
Lucknow: In a startling case of identity fraud, a man arrested in 2024 for smuggling narcotics wrongly identified himself as Nazim, a resident of Rudauli in Ayodhya. It was only after he jumped a conditional bail and absconded, and a court warrant reached Nazim's house that the reality came to light. It was then revealed that the man arrested for smuggling narcotics was one Shehzade, also of Rudauli. After his arrest, he misled the police and identified himself as Nazim. Police have now registered a fresh case of fraud against Shehzade. The incident has exposed the process of police verifying the credentials of a local accused against whom police proceedings are initiated. Barabanki superintendent of police Arpit Vijayvargiya said that a departmental probe has been initiated in the case against all those police personnel involved in the case. Barabanki police also lodged an FIR on Friday at Haidergarh police station, from where Shehzade was arrested last year. The FIR was lodged based on a complaint by Nazim whose identity Shehzade used to hoodwink police. There, he was shocked to learn that one Shehzade, son of Moshmeem, a resident of his own locality, was arrested on April 7, 2024, with 2.5 kg of poppy husk under Section 8/15 of the NDPS Act at Haidergarh police station. However, instead of providing his own details, Shehzade allegedly gave Nazim's name and address at the time of arrest. Nazim alleged that Shehzade impersonated him with malicious intent to defame him and potentially trap him in a serious criminal case. Shehzade reportedly remained in jail for nearly six months using Nazim's identity. Nazim emphasised that he has never been involved in any criminal activity nor has he ever been imprisoned. Haidergarh SHO Abhimanyu Mall said that an FIR under the relevant charges of impersonation, cheating, and forgery has been registered against Shehzade and a probe is being conducted.
