Joe Burrow Turns Clock Back As Star QB Will Play In Preseason

Joe Burrow is a fan of the old school.
While the modern gameplan in the NFL is to swaddle nearly every team's stars in bubble wrap during the preseason in order to avoid serious injuries, Burrow wants to play in the summer.
The reason: he wants the Bengals get off to a good start for the first time since the 2021 season. Cincinnati lost its first three games last year and the team's 1-4 start was one of the primary reasons this talented group missed the playoffs. It wasn't much better in 2023 when the Bengals started with three losses in their first four games and they were 2-3 at the start of the 2022 season.
Burrow has almost never played during the preseason and he believes that his lack of play during the preseason is a big reason why. He has been pushing head coach Zac Taylor for playing time in this year's preseason so he can be ready to start the season in prime form when the Bengals start the season on the road against the Cleveland Browns in Week One.
Burrow has had multiple injuries in the past – ACL, calf and wrist along with an appendectomy – but the slow Cincinnati starts have worn on him mentally. He wants to see his team get back to elite status after missing the playoffs two years in a row, and he believes this means playing in the preseason.
'Coaches know how I've felt about that, and how I've always thought that that would benefit me,' Burrow said. 'I think other positions, you have to be a little careful, because how physical that those positions are, but for me, those reps are valuable.'
Burrow believes the multiple rule changes over the years have given quarterbacks protection from the kind of hits that would result in a disastrous preseason injury, and he has apparently convinced Taylor to let him play in the three-game preseason.
While injuries could scuttle plans, Burrow could see action in two preseason games this summer. Perhaps the first quarter in Cincinnati's second preseason game against the Washington Commanders and the first half in the third game against the Indianapolis Colts.
QB battle unfolds in Indy

The Colts have a legitimate quarterback battle on their hands this summer where former Giant Daniel Jones will try to take the starter's job from oft-injured and inaccurate Anthony Richardson.
Give Jones the inside track on the job until Richardson can prove he can throw the ball accurately. Richardson is a brilliant athlete who can run the ball with authority when he decides to carry it himself. However, sitting in the pocket, surveying the field and delivering the ball to a receiver who has a step on the defender is a major weakness. He has a career completion percentage of 50.6 percent, a figure that was common in the 1960s and is simply no longer acceptable.
It will be very hard for Richardson to prove himself, but Jones does not have a brilliant NFL track record either. He is more accurate than Richardson, so unless he falls apart in the preseason, he is likely to start the season opener against the Miami Dolphins.
Wilson named as Giants' QB1

New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll has already tapped veteran Russell Wilson as the team's starter even though he has failed to distinguish himself since the 2021 season when he made the Pro Bowl as the Seattle Seahawks QB1. He had a 25-6 touchdown to interception ratio that season, which was his last in the Pacific Northwest.
The 36-year-old Wilson has had unimpressive stints with the Denver Broncos and Pittsburgh Steelers since, and this go-round with the Giants would seemingly serve as his last opportunity to start in the NFL.
While it sounds like Daboll has made his decision, what happens if rookie Jaxson Dart actually has an excellent showing during the preseason? It sounds like the head coach wants Dart to have something of a redshirt season in his rookie year, but general manager Joe Schoen appears to have left the door open for the rookie from Ole Miss to play.
'I think there's some real benefits from sitting and learning, specifically from some of the guys in the room that have the experience that they have,' Schoen said. 'But if the coaching staff at some point feels it's right and (Dart's) ready, then I'll leave that up to them.'
Veteran Jameis Winston is Wilson's backup and he could fill in for a game or two if Daboll needs to make a quarterback change at one point, but the 10-year veteran threw a league-worst 30 interceptions in 2019, the last time he was an NFL starter.
The decision to start Wilson looks like a shaky one for a team that was 3-14 a year ago and has had just one postseason appearance in the last eight years.

2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement: Jared Allen, Sterling Sharpe, Eric Allen, Antonio Gates express gratitude to those who lifted them

The Pro Football Hall of Fame added four members on Saturday, with Jared Allen, Sterling Sharpe, Antonio Gates and Eric Allen enshrined as the class of 2025 at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio. The four new inductees received their signature gold jackets during a dinner on Friday night. Prior to the quartet giving acceptance speeches on stage, the ceremony honored host Chris Berman, who emceed the Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony for the 25th time. Pittsburgh Steelers legend Lynn Swann, class of 2001, presented Berman with a silver anniversary football. Coach Marv Levy, also part of the 2001 class, was recognized for his 100th birthday, which is on Sunday (Aug. 3). Thurman Thomas, class of 2007, who played for Levy from 1998-97 with the Buffalo Bills, called him "the best coach I ever had." [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Jared Allen was the first of the inductees to take the stage. He was presented by his father, Ron Allen. Wearing a cowboy hat, Allen joked that he felt bad about giving bad advice — such as eating three jalapeno peppers before a game — to parents who asked for tips to a successful football career, often when he was having dinner or with family members. Finally enshrined in his fifth year of eligibility, Allen thanked his wife for elevating him and their two daughters, who he called "his legacy." From Yahoo Sports' Frank Schwab: "[Allen] was entertaining as a player, with 136 career sacks during stints with the Vikings, Chiefs, Bears and Panthers, and also unapologetically himself. His famous calf-roping celebration after sacks was a part of who he was, and maybe the most memorable part of a great career." Up next was Sterling Sharpe. Appropriately, he was presented by his brother Shannon Sharpe, class of 2011. The two now comprise the first brother tandem to be inducted into Canton. Sharpe thanked his mother for giving him the name "Sterling," which helped him stand out as a young black man in rural south Georgia and inspired him. He also thanked the women in his life for helping him get to where he is, including his two sisters. Schwab on Sharpe: "Sharpe won the NFL's receiving triple crown in 1992, leading the NFL with 108 catches, 1,461 yards and 13 touchdowns. The 108 receptions set an NFL single-season record. He broke that record the following season with 112 catches. In his final season, he caught a league-best 18 touchdowns." Sharpe was followed by Eric Allen, who was presented by his oldest son, Austin. Allen thanked his mother and grandmother for teaching him kindness and instilling a work ethic, in addition to his three sons. Allen played three seasons for the New Orleans Saints and four with the Oakland Raiders, but singled out the Philadelphia Eagles and owner Jeffrey Lurie. Allen was drafted by the Eagles and played seven seasons with the team. Schwab on Allen: "Allen was one of the best cover corners of his era. He wasn't the biggest player, at 5-foot-10, 184 pounds, but he was quick and had tremendous anticipation. When quarterbacks threw his way, he often ended up with his hands on the ball. Allen had 54 interceptions and returned eight of them for touchdowns. He led the NFL in pick 6s in 1993 and again in 2000." The ceremony's final speaker was Antonio Gates, who was presented by Los Angeles Chargers owner Dean Spanos. With 116 touchdown catches, Gates is the NFL's all-time leader in that category for tight ends. He made sure to thank quarterbacks Doug Flutie, Drew Brees and notably Philip Rivers, who threw 89 of those TD passes. Schwab on Gates: "Gates' path to the Hall of Fame is literally unlike any other. The longtime Chargers tight end is the first one to make the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a player without appearing in a college football game, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. There's at least a little more history for undrafted players in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Before Gates, 22 players went from undrafted to a bust in Canton." The Pro Football Hall of Fame now has 382 members, including the class of 2025. All of them were arguably overdue to be honored for their careers and enshrined in Canton. Yet that likely won't be remembered amid the fond memories of being recognized for their achievements and getting the opportunity to publicly acknowledged those who helped lift them to football immortality.

Brent Crews Sells Micro Sprints to Fund New NASCAR Truck Team, Friends Zilisch and Love Not Involved

After three races with Tricon Garage in the No. 1 Toyota Tundra, Brent Crews has gone all in on NASCAR Truck Racing. The rising Toyota development driver sold his Micro Sprints to fund his own Truck team, Brent Crews Motorsports, as an owner and driver. The 17-year-old's first race in the No. 70 Toyota Tundra will be next weekend at Watkins Glen, as he's decided that he doesn't want to sit on the sidelines of the sport. "I don't really know where this is going to go, but with all the buzz around road course guys right now, it didn't seem right to miss Watkins Glen," Crews said in a press release. "I love the track. Watching on TV was NOT an option." Crews is following in the footsteps of mentors Brian Keselowski and Nick Tucker, who both funded truck teams on shoestring budgets at portions of their careers. Tucker now owns and operates Nitro Motorsports, where Crews will run BCM out of in the early stages of the team before investing in a race shop. I grew up going to dinner on race weekends with guys like Nick Tucker and Brian Keselowski listening to stories about building race cars and engines out of spare parts and barely getting to the track,' Crews said in his press release. 'Even though everyone would tell them they were crazy, it always sounded like so much fun to me. When we started talking about me buying a truck to run Watkins Glen, no one was willing to tell me it was a bad idea and it just kind of snowballed from there. I sold all my micro sprints to raise some of the money and here we are." Before Friday's ARCA race at Iowa Speedway, Crews had to clarify one misunderstanding. When he announced that he was starting his own team, he overexaggerated the roles of his friends and racing competitors Jesse Love and Connor Zilisch, who both race for Chevrolet in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. "Connor and Jesse are great friends of mine, but we went a little overboard in exaggerating their roles," Crews wrote on X. "To be clear, they have no official capacity, other than they are friends who want me to do well." Brent Crews would go on to finish second in the Atlas 150 ARCA race at Iowa Speedway. Both Zilisch and Love posted on X similar explanations, sharing their teams and manufacturers to clear the air about their involvement. Clearly, making it known that neither of them has any association with Toyota. Crews has one more race with Tricon scheduled this season at Richmond, that weekend he'll strap into the No. 1 truck instead of the No. 70.
