Thai economy improved in April on increased manufacturing, central bank says

Reuters30-05-2025
BANGKOK, May 30 (Reuters) - The Thai economy improved in April from March, driven by the manufacturing sector after a sharp increase in exports drove inventory replenishment and also helped by a slight rise in tourism, the central bank said in a report on Friday.
It was too early to see adverse impacts from the U.S. tariff policy, which was announced in early April, the Bank of Thailand said, noting that private investment continued to expand.
And while the tourism sector slightly improved from March, it remained weaker compared to the same period last year.
"Although exports to the U.S. slowed slightly, they remained at a high level," the central bank said.
Total exports rose 9.9% in April from a year earlier and imports increased by 17.3%, the BOT said, leading to a trade deficit of $1.4 billion.
Thailand recorded a current account deficit of $1.5 billion in April.

Climate change could spell the end for beaches at European hot-spot

& Suman Naishadham Coastal erosion is severely impacting Montgat, a town north of Barcelona, threatening its beaches and summer tourism. The erosion is primarily caused by climate change, leading to more intense storms and significant sea level rise. Man-made beaches, developed for tourism after the 1992 Olympics, are eroding at an accelerated rate compared to natural coastlines. Authorities recognise that simply replenishing sand is insufficient, advocating for structural solutions like breakwaters to prevent further loss. Scientists report that sea levels along the Catalan coast are four times higher than three decades ago, with an estimated 60 million euros needed to stabilise the metropolitan coastline.

US became net exporter of crude to Nigeria for the first time, EIA says

July 22 (Reuters) - The United States became a net exporter of crude oil to Nigeria in February and March, as crude demand on the U.S. East Coast slowed due to refinery maintenance and the Dangote refinery drove up Nigeria's demand for inputs, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said in a note on Tuesday. This is the first time that the U.S. has exported more crude oil to Nigeria than it imported. Nigeria is generally considered a source for U.S. crude oil imports, ranking ninth last year. Nigeria's Dangote oil refinery – the largest in Africa, located on the outskirts of Lagos – began processing crude in January 2024 after years of delays. The refinery is set to reach full capacity of 650,000 b/d this year, according to the EIA. Gross U.S. exports of crude to Nigeria touched 111,000 b/d in February and 169,000 b/d in March. Imports, which were at 133,000 b/d in January, dropped to 54,000 b/d and 72,000 b/d in February and March respectively. The decline in imports is largely due to maintenance at the Phillips 66 Bayway refinery New Jersey, per the EIA. However, imports increased later in the year as the Bayway refinery resumed normal operations in April, and Dangote underwent some unplanned maintenance. This trend seems more a snapshot of a very fluid market, rather than a permanent realignment, according to Eli Tesfaye, senior market strategist at RJO Futures. "The new refinery in Nigeria and some issues in securing domestic supplies played a role for those unique flows earlier this year. But going forward, with the refinery now aiming to secure domestic flows, and probably looking at other crude grades, it is difficult to forecast if the volume flowing from the U.S. to Nigeria will persist," agreed Giovanni Staunovo, an analyst at UBS.

Emirates goes on a hiring spree for cabin crew, pilots and ground services staff

DUBAI, July 22 (Reuters) - The parent of Emirates airline is looking to expand its workforce by 17,300 including hiring more cabin crew, pilots and engineers as well as cargo, catering and ground handling staff, it said on Tuesday. Emirates Group, owned by Dubai's sovereign wealth fund ICD, plans to add staff in 350 different roles across the group in the financial year that ends next March, expanding its overall workforce by 14%. The new jobs will include over 4,000 at its ground-handling firm dnata, it said. Emirates plays a key role in positioning Dubai as a global centre. Under a 10-year plan known as D33, the city state is seeking to grow its economy by investing in tourism and attracting foreign capital, including into real estate. Home to the world's tallest tower, the city-state welcomed 8.68 million overnight visitors between January and May this year, a rise of 7% from a year earlier, according to government data. As part of the recruiting drive, Emirates will be hosting over 2,100 open days and other talent acquisition events in 150 cities throughout the year, it said in the statement.
